CHAPTER 16

The first stop on Jason's list was the accident scene. The accident scene still gave him the chills, especially when he looked down the very steep ravine that still had the marks from where the Cherokee rolled down it. It seemed to him that the vehicle rolled at least seven times as they made their way down to the bottom. Glass and small pieces from the four-wheel drive were scattered all along the vehicle's path. Jason had to sit down to take in the whole accident site. He could hear the wind whistling through the pines and it gave him a little peace of mind. He was trying to put himself in his brother's place. It must have been horrific knowing that he was going to go over the side and face the terrain, especially in the dark.

"Hey, Jason!" He heard a voice say that woke him out of his trance. "This is where the Cherokee came to a rest. Maybe we should look around farther down in case the wind or commotion blew something on down the hill."

"Yes, definitely! I'll look to the left and you look to the right," Jason said to Craig, as they began their search for evidence.

The boys searched for anything that would lead them to an answer to what may have happened. Jason was getting very discouraged when he caught a glimpse of a piece of paper. He walked over to it and picked it up very carefully. It was a schedule of some kind that was dated for event for this week. At first Jason was going to dismiss it as belonging to one of the rescue members, but something caught his eye. He called Craig over to read it.

"This looks like someone's weekly itinerary. It could be anyone's, Jason," Craig said, not noticing the same thing that Jason had noticed. "I mean, Monday- meeting at 9:00, prayer from 11:00 to 2:00 and then it says Tuesday -meeting at 10:00 and prayer from 11:00 to 2:00."

"But read the bottom, Sherlock," Jason said sarcastically. Everyone called Craig Sherlock because he was very smart and deductive.

"Remember to allow time for a special services and to order daisies and blue carnations," Craig read again. "So, what are you getting at Jason?"

"Chuck said that someone came to check on the accident. What if Ashita really did arrange this accident? I remember that when I asked his guards if they had seen Adam and Alyssa that night the one guard named Jacob acted really weird. Almost like he was hiding a very big secret, but he could not tell me," Jason told Craig. "What if this was one of the guard' notes? Special services could be for a funeral. Also, the other regular churches do not have service hours daily like this schedule."

"True, but this doesn't not prove that he did it," Craig said, repeating a famous line that Mr. Kramer after used.

"But it is pointing us in the right direction. I know what Chuck said on the night of the accident. He said he saw and heard two people come to the accident scene and left them," Jason said to counteract Craig. "If the people were concerned by standers my brother would have received medical help long before he did. They left him to die!"

"Okay, calm down. I am on your side, but you have to convince the police and they are not going to bother the weirdo on the hill unless they have major proof," Craig responded in a calm voice.

"Well, then let's start finding the proof with that Cherokee. Let's go to the camp," Jason said as he turned to head up the hill.

"I knew that was next, "Craig said shaking his head as he followed his friend up the hill to the van.

It wasn't long until Jason hid the van on a side road about a mile from the camp. It was now almost 10:30 and he was hoping that the people would be in chapel according to the note. The boys quietly made their way to the church camp through the rows and rows of pines, underbrush and ravines. Soon the cabins and the main house came into view. They could hear the church services going on. This made Jason give Craig a slight grin. So far the note was correct.

"Please give a moment of silent prayer for my beloved niece, Alyssa. She will hopefully be coming home in two days and we are preparing a special cabin to suit her special needs. It is so unjust that our sister suffers in such a way, but it is my Father's will. Anything that happens is His will. We must have faith," the voice of Ashita boomed over the loud speaker.

"So where do you think they would put the Cherokee?" Jason whispered. Both boys scanned the area and decided to circle the grounds, hoping to catch a glimpse of the wrecked vehicle. They had just about walked around the whole grounds when they spotted a tarped object behind a wooden shack. The boys walked over to the object and Craig raised the tarp.

"Bingo!" Craig said with a satisfied smile.

"I want to check out this cabin. We need to find the author of this note," Jason replied. He knew that services would be over in an hour. "You check out the Cherokee since you know more about cars than I do."

"Anyone knows more about a car than you do. Sometimes I wonder how you guys can be brothers," Craig said jokingly. Everyone knew that Adam could rebuild anything that moved, while Jason could just check the oil. However, Jason was the computer person so the boys' talents meshed perfectly.

Jason gave him a slight smirk and continued on to the back door of the cabin.

He opened the door and began to look around and what he saw shocked him. On the dresser was a family picture that included the guard Jacob, Ashita, a younger couple and an older lady sitting in the middle with a little girl on her lap. The little girl had to be Alyssa. Then there were other pictures of some of the same people in different locations. All of the pictures seemed to be family related. It made him think of all of the family pictures that his own family had in their family albums. It made him think for a minute if one person would be absent from those pictures. He shook the thought from his head because he had a job to do and he did not have much time. The room seemed like a bunking house except it was just one room with a small bathroom. It had a bed, dresser, and an old rocking chair in the middle. The whole cabin was very rustic. Jason began looking around in the drawers. He had just started the second drawer when he spotted a notebook behind a large Bible on the floor next to the bed. Jason picked up the notebook and noticed immediately that the handwriting matched the note that they had found at the accident scene. He carefully skimmed over some of the passages of what seemed to be a diary. The passages were even dated and had started about a year before the present time. He skipped to the end of the diary. On the day of the accident he read a very disturbing passage: "I really feel in my heart that this is wrong, but the Messiah says that it is prophecy. How can prophecy be so unfair and cruel? It states that one should not kill. Right now I feel like I am no better than Cain. My heart is truly torn and drowning in guilt."

Jason was almost paralyzed as he read that plus the next day's entry: " I hope that the Messiah truly knows the prophecy. My guilt is unbearable. He said that the other people were all part of the fate, but how could I have looked in the eyes of a fellow brother and not tell him the truth? I feel his pain and I pray for the Father to do his will with mercy." The rest of the passage that continued on to the next two pages dealt with Bible quotes that were directed to death, prophecy and the story of Cain and Abel. Jason ripped out the page that he read and put it into his pocket. He was feeling a lot of emotion at the time. For as much as he disliked Alyssa at the time, he felt torn because she was an innocent victim just like his brother and Chuck. He also felt compassion for Jacob, but he did not know why. Jacob is the one who is responsible for the accident. He was startled by the sound of his name being whispered from the door.

It was Craig. Jason put everything back to the way that it was before he came into the cabin and went to see what Craig needed.

"What did you find?" Jason asked as he joined his friend under the tarp.

"A lot. This thing was a death trap. Not only did they rig the brakes to slowly leak fluid; they set this thing up to stall out if the brake scheme did not work. There are so many things that have been messed with that I just don't know where to begin, Jason," Craig said looking into the engine area. The hood had been removed so the engine was fully open.

"Are you serious?" Jason asked walking over to where Adam was at in the wreckage. You could see into the passenger area since the rescuers and investigators had bent the top of the vehicle back to the backseat area. It gave Jason the chills to see the dried blood on the seat where his brother was that night, not to mention the cut in the seat from the impact of the top of the Cherokee. His brother was truly lucky to even be alive.

"Do you want me to show you?" Craig said, wiping his oily hands on his jeans.

"No, I believe you," Jason replied, still taking in the sight of the wreckage.

"I took the liberty of taking the brake hose. They put a very old hose on it and tried to make it look like it just snapped. However, hoses just don't have nice cuts like this even if they are old," Craig said, holding the hose up for Jason to see. "They knew that they had a long curvy road ahead of them and that this vehicle would not make it through the terrain. Perfect set up for an accident because a lot of people wreck because of the terrain. I bet they did not count on the people living."

"But why? My brother and Chuck did not deserve this. What would be their motive?" Jason said, quizzically. "He seemed to really love Alyssa even though he was a loony man."

"Probably money. That would be my guess. I think that if you dig deep into his history, you will find a lot of answers," Craig replied.

"The same thought just hit my head as well. I found this in the cabin. This is Jacob's cabin and the handwriting matches the note that we found earlier."

Craig looked over the piece of paper and agreed that the handwriting matched. "You know, I bet if we could get Jacob alone we could get him to crack."

"I know, but that might be impossible. That Ashita has a lot of mind power over these people. I don't know if we could break it," Jason said as the boys came out from under the tarp. "We had better get back and let Dad see this stuff."

"Then we will be in trouble for coming out here!" Craig said, remembering the promise that they had made to Mr. Kramer.

"If getting in trouble with my father is the price that I have to pay to find out who did this to Adam, then that is fine with me," Jason said, as they started to walk around the camp to return to the van.

The boys only walked about 50 feet when they heard a voice yell out, "Hey! Who are you?" A young teenage boy looking out of one of the cabins had spotted them and was running out the door of the cabin after them. Jason looked over at Craig, "Just run and follow me."

Jason and Craig took off running down the hill through the pines. They could hear the boys trying to catch them and Jason assumed that the church people were probably not too far behind.

"What are we going to do? We can't hide," Craig said, in between his puffs of breath. Both boys were running for all they could. The young boy was far behind, but they were still not a safe distance from him.

The boys continued to run through the thick vegetation until they came to a cliff that overlooked the Hocking River. It was a good three stories down and Jason was not crazy about having to jump into the river. However, he could hear the boy approaching them and in the distance he could hear other footsteps.

He looked over at Craig and he could tell that Craig felt the same way. He also knew that even though Craig was a stocky football player, he was terrified of heights. He would not even jump off of the high dive at one of their friend's pool. Jason knew that he had to make a decision and fast. He definitely did not want to get caught because he knew that would be the end of his chances of clearing his brother's name. He made a promise to Adam to find out the truth no matter what and he was going to stick by that promise. At that, Jason grabbed Craig and still clinging on to him, pushed both boys over the side of the cliff into the fast moving water of the Hocking River.
