CHAPTER 19

"Here we are at the famous Kramer household, dropping in to see what is going on in the world of the ever famous Kramer Brothers. AH! What do I see! There on the couch next to his beach bunny is blond haired blue eyed Adam Kramer. Just at the mere age of seventeen, Adam has solved his share of crimes, including bringing down a ring of murder and infallible acts by no other than the underground mob. Yes, folks, he is just seventeen," A voice boomed as the camera pictured Adam Kramer lying on the couch holding his girlfriend, Alyssa Clarke. "Hey buddy, that is one hot brunette there. HEY! HEY! Don't steam up my camera lens. GEEZ! Teenagers in love! This is supposed to be a G rated project thank you very much!"

Then the camera turned the other way to a beautiful blond seated in at the dining room table. The cameraman walked slowly with the camera not missing a second of the now blushing young woman.

"Hubba Hubba! You are one fine lady!" the voice sung. The girl put up her hand up to block the camera lens.

"Hey, hands off buddy! Get your own girlfriend, Miss Dobbins is with me!" another voice said as a brown haired lad sat beside her and gave her a small kiss on the cheek.

"AH! And here is the other part of the dynamic crime-fighting duo, Jason Kramer. A year older than his brother, Jason is the brains of the operation, the light on a dark night, the water in the middle of the Sahara Desert..." the voice carried on.

"CHUCK!" all four voices yelled at once.

The camera was turned off and Chuck stood there in the middle of the living room. "All right!"

"So what is this project again and why do we have to be in it?" Jason asked Chuck.

"I am supposed to document real life. I need to tape life's ups and downs and its mysteries," the red headed jolly boy said, sitting down in the recliner. "Since my life is not exciting, I have chose you two as the center of my expose."

"I am sure that we will be famous," Adam quipped.

"Hey, you agreed to help me after I helped out and got shot in the shoulder," Chuck reminded the brothers. "That hurt you know."

"You were just fine," Adam pointed out to his best friend since grade school.

"I had a scar," Chuck quipped back. "I tried to include Craig since he is going to that neat technology camp, but he said that he was not the photogenic type. So since you two owe me big time, I knew that you would not turn me down. The real life angle into the life of the crime fighting brothers, Adam and Jason. The drama, the romance, the action..."

"The murder of Adam's best friend," Adam interrupted. Everyone laughed except for Chuck, who scowled as his friend.

"Well I need the good grade and you owe me. Both of you do," Chuck whined.

"We said we would help you and we will. But there is not going to be too much action around here I am afraid. Mom is getting ready to go back to Mexico to head up an excavation and Dad is already on his way to San Francisco for a meeting with the higher ups in the state department," Jason said, sipping a glass of milk. "Emerald Beach is a calm small town so not much going on."

"Well I have already told the audience about your parents. I said that your mother worked for UCSD as a professor of archeology and that your father was a long time investigator from the great state of California. Then I stated that you two were following in your father's footsteps by solving your own cases while still attending Emerald Beach High," Chuck said enthusiastically. Then his face turned dismal. "Then I had to briefly cover the accident that we were all in."

Adam at first sighed. He wanted to forget that night. That was the night that his life and Alyssa's changed forever. The accident left Adam with serious brain trauma and Alyssa paralyzed. Chuck escaped with minor injuries and a scar on his face.

"He has to cover it. Since I am getting my operation next Monday, the people needed to know some background," Alyssa spoke up with a smile.

"Maybe this movie will feature you taking your first steps all over again!" Kara commented. Alyssa was going to have an experimental surgery on her legs and spinal cord in hopes of stimulating some nerves and muscles in her legs. She was one of 50 people selected to be a part of the experiment and she had to travel all the way to Washington DC to do it. So her guardian Clara and herself were booked on a flight set to leave John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California at 8:10 am Sunday morning.

"That would be great! I just wish that I could be there. I am going to miss you. What am I going to do for the next three weeks that you will be gone?" Adam said, snuggling Alyssa closer to him.

"Hang out with your best friend, Chuck and help him with his video project," Chuck recanted.

Everyone laughed at Chuck's statement. Adam had been joined to the hip literally to Alyssa since they almost broke up over a girl named Christine. But things were fine now and he wanted it to stay that way.

"Well, tomorrow night is OUR night. No cameras. Total privacy," Adam commented, pointing his finger at Chuck. Then turning to Jason, " And no curfew since mom AND dad will be gone."

"No problem my friend, I will just get caught up on my Saturday night activities at the pier," Chuck replied. "Just be ready to go first thing after church!"

"Good, then we will also have some private time of our own!" Jason said, hugging Kara from behind. Then looking over at Adam. "Alyssa is going to need her rest since she is going to have to get up very early in the morning you know." Adam made a face at Jason. He could not help but wonder exactly how Jason knew about his dates and activities. But Jason would never stoop so low as to check up on him. Adam figured that Alyssa and Kara talked and compared notes.

"Romance, shemance, yuckmance," Chuck mumbled. "You can have your romance, just save some for the camera."

"Well I don't know about you, but it is getting late and I am supposed to be home by 11," Kara said, looking at her watch. "The movie and pizza was great! I like our little get togethers."

"Same here since she is my ride," Alyssa commented. "Could you help me start getting everything loaded Adam?"

"Sure thing," Adam said as he stood up and placed Alyssa to his side. Jason came over and helped move Alyssa into a carrying position. Then he steadily lifted her up.

"I can do that you know," Adam remarked.

"Not until those stitches on your stomach come out. I don't need you passing out at the sight of your own blood again," Jason smarted back to him. Adam made a face and grabbed Alyssa's purse/book bag Chuck went ahead to hold the doors open. Sometimes it was easier to just carry Alyssa into the house and leave the wheelchair in the car since the Kramer house was not handicap accessible.

With a short kiss good-bye the girls headed for home and Chuck soon joined them in his own car, making his way back to his family's farmhouse.

Adam and Jason stood there, watching their guests turn out of their drive and onto the country road.

"So what are we going to do now? I am not really all that tired," Adam asked as the brothers stood there and enjoyed the cool, clear night sky.

"First of all, I am going to save Mom the leftover pizza in case she is hungry whenever she makes it home. She said that she had to put the last minute details into the excavation plan," Jason remarked.

"Do you want to play Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit?" Adam asked. The boys loved to fiercely play board games against each other. They had not done that in a long time. Some of the best times he has spent with his older brother were in front of a board game.

"Nah, I don't feel like having to think. Think of another game," Jason said, opening the back door that went into the kitchen. Adam ran past him and up the stairs to his room. It seemed like lately that Adam was having trouble recalling facts quickly and Jason did not feel comfortable playing a game that would play on Adam's weakness. It was true that Adam was learning a lot of strategies in his special education classes and his grades were in pretty good shape, but lately things seemed different. Alyssa loved having him play the guitar for her, but he would always have some excuse about not being able to play it. The van needed some mechanical work and Adam asked their father if Samual Deck could not work on it this time. And then there were the headaches. Headaches so severe that Adam almost begged for medicine. Their mother had taken Adam to the doctor about them and Doctor Coykendall assured her that this was normal. That brain trauma people have good and bad days, weeks and even years. At least, Adam had not had any more seizures for a very long time. Jason hated the seizures. The seizures scared him death to be honest and Adam had never really had a really bad seizure yet.

"Things are going to be fine, you just have to have faith," Jason whispered to himself.

"What did you say?" a voice boomed from the dining room. The sound of a board game being dropped on the kitchen table could be heard followed by heavy footsteps. Jason about jumped out of his skin at the unexpected entrance.

"I SAID to you have to let the whole world know that you are moving! Gee whiz Adam, you thump around the house like you were an earthquake," Jason remarked and then joined his brother.

"SORRY, uh?" Jason said as he saw the board game stretched out and ready to go.

"I know that you love a good game of SORRY," Adam said with a grin. Soon the boys were caught up in the game. The brothers enjoyed bumping each other, sliding down the slide areas and chiding each other as one was put back into start.

Jason had two in "start" while Adam had one in "start" and one blue peg right outside Jason's red "start" block. All of the rest of the pegs were in "home". It was never known why Adam was always blue and Jason was always red, but that was the way it had always been in any board game.

"YES!" Jason said as he drew a card and smiled widely. He then reached across and took one of his red pegs out of "start" and knocked Adam's blue peg off the block.

"HEY!" Adam cried out. "You didn't have to do that! You have put me back five times now!"

"No mercy for the wicked, my dear brother," Jason quipped and reached out to take another card.

"What are you doing! It is my turn now!"

"I had a "2" so that means I get to go again."

Adam frowned as his brother did a little dance after advancing his peg to a triangle that allowed him to slide forward some spaces. The boys continued the game about the same way. The game had already been an hour in length and it was now approaching the midnight hour. Laura had called and said she would be home around one in the morning and that she would spend some time with the boys this weekend before she left on Monday for five days at the excavation site.

"Are you getting tired?" Jason asked Adam. Adam's eyes had started to look a little glassy.

"No, just a headache starting I think. I have a lot on my mind I guess too," Adam said as he drew his card and moved ahead 9 spaces.

"Worried about Alyssa?" Jason asked.

"Not really. I mean she is going to be a patient of one of the best doctors in the world for her condition. He seems to have had success with this method so I know she will be fine," Adam muttered, staring at the board.

"But..." Jason pried more. He knew that there must be something else to the problem.

"But what?"

"If you are sure she is going to be fine, then what are you worried about?"

Adam took both of his hands and pushed his medium length hair out of his face.

"Adam, you know you can tell me anything. I am not going to say anything to anyone or judge you for it," Jason commented.

"I know that, but it just seems so selfish and stupid of me to even think this. I feel so horrible even the thought to enter my mind!" Adam said, still holding his hair back. He was staring at the table in frustration. Then he looked up at Jason. "I just don't know how to explain it. I mean I am so excited that she is getting this chance. I would love to see her walk again, even if she had to use arm braces or a walker. It would be like it was before, like the day she first walked into Miss Meade's room and into my life."

Jason got up and walked over to Adam and sat down on the chair beside him. "Look, it is not your fault she is paralyzed. It was just..."

"I know, an accident," Adam interrupted. "While I do feel like I might have been able to do something else that night, I know that it was just an accident. That is not the problem though. I just can't find the words to describe what I am feeling."

Jason pondered for a minute and then spoke up, "I think I know what it is."

"What?"

"You ARE scared," Jason said.

"Weren't you listening to me? I am not scared of something happening to her. She is the best hands," Adam said, looking up at his brother with an aggravated expression on his face.

"Not of that. You are afraid that if she gets better and starts walking one day, that she will not be interested in you. That she will leave you for someone else."
