CHAPTER 19

Adam did not like the idea of lying to his brother. So he did arrange for Mrs. Cooper to look at his wet suit, even though there was really nothing wrong with it.

"I could have swore I thought I saw a small hole starting!" Adam said as he shrug his shoulders. "I must have been just seeing things again!"

Thank Mrs. Cooper with a small hug, Chuck and Adam walked out to the station wagon. Adam went around to the driver door and reached in to pull the hood latch.

"What are you doing now?" Chuck asked, looking at Adam like he was losing it.

"I said that I was going to be checking your car," Adam replied as he started to check over the regular maintenance things. Then he shut the hood. "Okay I checked it, now it is time for a test drive. By the way, are your surf boards still in the barn?"

"Yeah, actually your old one is still here from a week ago. You kept forgetting to get it and I kept forgetting to get it back to you," Chuck said, pointing to the one barn that was next to the farmhouse. Then his eyes narrowed as he saw a gust of excitement in Adam's eyes. "What?"

"It is time to mark off one of the things that I used to do," Adam said, walking towards the barn.

"I don't get this. You surf every week or so. What is so different about surfing?" Chuck said, grabbing his board and wetsuit. Both boys put their equipment in the back of the station wagon, angling the surfboards through the back window.

"But we are going to go surfing at Devil's Point," Adam said as he got into the passenger side of the car.

"WHAT! ARE YOU CRAZY!" Chuck exclaimed, getting in to the driver seat. Chuck was not a good surfer to begin with, let alone being asked to surf at one of the rockiest areas along their local coastline. Also the slant of the beach also made the waves roll in a lot stronger with more of an undertow. So Devil's point was a surfer's delight that was local and a short drive from Emerald Beach.

"Jason will not let me near there and I have been dying to it for a while. I love that beach area and that is on the list of the things I want to do," Adam sounded off with determination. "You are either with me or against me."

Chuck sighed really loud as he started the old station wagon and reluctantly abided by his best friend's wishes.

When the boys had finally arrived at Devil's Point, Chuck had to stop and take in the sight. There was nothing like the sight of the waves from the Pacific crashing up against the rocks, showering salt water into the air. Adam stopped long enough to take in the sight and ran towards the public changing rooms. Within seconds, it seemed he was fully dressed in his black wetsuit and strapping his board to him.

"Isn't this wonderful!" He grinned as he stopped by Chuck, who was taping the ocean. "I hope that you are not going to stand behind that camera the whole time and get out there yourself."

"Adam, you know that I am not a very good surfer," Chuck said as he steered the camera lens at the blond-haired boy in front of him.

"Well the only person you have to worry about running into is me since we are the only ones here!" Adam said with a chuckle.

"It is not the human factor that I am worried about, Mr. Know-it-all. It is the rocks that are not so soft."

"You have plenty of cushioning there my dear friend," Adam said, poking his finger into his friend's stomach. Chuck made the familiar laugh that equaled the Pillsbury DoughBoy. Both boys laughed. "Well I am off to conquer the waves and breathe in the salty air."

"Just don't breathe in salt water! Jason would kill me if anything ever happened to you!" Chuck quipped.

"Jason needs to learn that he is not my boss and you can't live life in fear," Adam said holding his surfboard. Chuck's camera was still rolling.

"So I guess then you will not mind it if I share this footage with him tonight for his viewing pleasure," Chuck snorted back. Adam flashed him a look.

Then Adam walked up to the camera. Putting on his best "face", he said, "Jason, I love you to death and there is nothing I would not do for you. But I just had to do this just in case something happens in the surgery. Now I am off to ride some waves!"

With that, Adam ran for the water and paddled out to the breaker line. Chuck captured many great rides as well as some really funny spills. Every time Adam took a spill, Chuck held his breath. However, his worry was soon dispelled by a simple wave of the hand. Adam surfed for forty-five minutes with the California sun as his backdrop. Soon the youngest Kramer made his way back to the beach. Chuck threw him a beach towel as his friend sat down in front of him.

"So how do you feel?" Chuck asked with the camera trained on Adam's face.

Adam took in a few breaths and then replied, "I just feel like a new person. I forgot what it felt like to just be able to navigate the waves. It makes you remember the sheer power of the ocean. It is such a marvel isn't it."

"So what are you going to do next?" Chuck asked. "Disneyland?"

Adam laughed at his friend and then wiped the water off of his face. "No, I am going to go and get changed and get warmed up. It is a little cold out there!"

"Wimp!" Chuck fired back. Adam just made a face at his friend and quickly went over to change back into warmer clothes. Chuck met him at the car and loaded the station wagon.

"So where to next? I hope that wherever it is that it serves food," Chuck said as they both sat down in the car.

"Let's just drive and stop at the first food joint we see, but let's take the ocean view way instead," Adam replied. Chuck shrugged his shoulder and started the car up. Both boys enjoyed the view of the California sunset as the road winded back and forth along the coast. It was the long way back, but no one seemed to mind except Chuck's grumbling stomach. The boys were nearing into a straight stretch when they spotted someone hitchhiking along the road.

"Let's pick that person up, we are not in any hurry," Adam exclaimed.

"We don't have any idea of who it is! What if it is a car jacker!" Chuck argued back.

"I don't think that they would risk jail and stuff to steal this car. Besides, it is a girl. Didn't you see her long hair?" Adam laughed. Chuck made a face at his best friend, but did pull over.

The older, yet still young lady ran up to the passenger window.

"Which way are you heading?" Adam asked. The woman appeared to be in her twenties and was dressed in black jeans and a Harley Davidson T-shirt.

"I just need a lift to my boyfriend's house. He is having a get together and my bike broke down about a mile back. No one would stop so I just kept walking. I guess it serves me right for not having my cell phone with me," The young woman explained.

"Where does he live?" Chuck asked. He was starved to death and was hoping for a quick trip.

"Just down the road," the lady answered.

"Hop in, we will give you a lift. We were just looking for a food joint any way," Adam said scooting over on the bench seat to give the lady room to sit down.

"Thank you so much! Did I hear you say that you're looking for dinner?" She said with a smile. "I think I can take care of that. Like I said, my boyfriend is having a get together and he is grilling steak with all of the trimmings. I am sure that he will be overly generous since you helped me out."

"Did I hear steak?" Chuck said, his mouth almost watering.

"Yes, he is one of the best grillers around! So I take it you have accepted my invitation?" the young lady asked, smiling again.

"You bet. Now see Adam, aren't you glad that I suggested picking up this beautiful young lady," Chuck replied, looking over at Adam. Adam just rolled his eyes.

"So your name is Adam. Cute name," The lady said. Then she extended her hand. "My name is Jessica, but my biker friend's call me Wildflower. You can call me Jessie though."

"I am Charles, but my friend's call me Chuck. We are from Emerald Beach."

"I have been there a few times on rides. I live in Long Beach so I can attend UCLA. I don't have any early classes tomorrow so I am crashing down at my best friend's house. I am originally from San Clemente so," Jessie added. "I guess I will have to see if the boys will go back for my bike. I hid it behind some brush back there."

"I was thinking that I didn't remember seeing a motorcycle back there anywhere," Chuck commented.

"You can't leave them out in the open since you can just up and wheel them off. I saved and saved for it and I felt bad enough having to leave it. It just stopped and no matter what I did, it would not start. Then it did not help that I forgot my tool bag!" Jessie said in frustration.

Jessie then began giving the boys directions and just talking about her life at UCLA. She was an advertising major hoping to make it big one day. But for now, she was going to enjoy her greatest hobby, her motorcycle.

Soon she routed Chuck to a modest two-story home along the coast. It was not oceanfront, but it was close enough to feel the chilly ocean breeze. Chuck was amazed to see a half a dozen motorcycles and an older Volkswagen bug. Jessie led both boys through the swinging fence and to the backyard.

"Here are my new friends, Adam and Chuck. They picked me up on the highway after my bike broke down," Jessie explained to the group of seven comprising of two women and five men. "They are going to be our guest for dinner."

At first, Chuck and Adam held their breath as the group eyed them. Then the man standing behind the grill walked up to them. "So do you make a habit of picking up beautiful women off of the sides of roads?" the man growled. "Especially women who are spoken for?"

Chuck was about to shake in his tennis shoes. Adam just eyed the man. He was dressed in beat up blue jeans and a leather vest. He had several Harley Davidson related tattoos on both of his arms.

"Oh, look at this one! He does not seem to be nervous at all," the man said, chuckling and pointing to Adam.

"Joey, knock it off. They are just boys. They are both still in high school for God's sake!" Jessie called out. She was very aggravated at his behavior.

But the man did not back down. Instead he walked up to Adam and stood looking at him straight in the eye. Adam did not even flinch. There was no way he was backing down. He could hear Chuck swallowing hard behind him and reaching out to pull him back. However, Adam Kramer's feet were firmly planted. There was no way he was going to be accused of making moves on a woman when he had a girlfriend of his own.
