The
three boys stood in silence and then Chuck put the camera down.
"I don't know about you, but I think that we got that scene taken care of just fine," Chuck commented as he looked over at the two brothers. "What about your turn?" Adam said in bewilderment. "Sorry, but I am the cameraman and I think you guys covered it," Chuck said, patting the camera. "Now that we got that part over with, I say we go somewhere fun." "Definitely!" Jason said with a smile and extending his hand to help Adam up. The three boys climbed up to the top of the ravine and piled into Chuck's station wagon. "Let's go to your house and get changed and then play some football on the beach," Chuck suggested. "It has been a long time since just the guys got together." "Yeah! I have been dying to play some football!" Adam exclaimed from the backseat. "I get Pooh Bear!" Jason, though, was not as enthused. "Fine, but it has to be touch, no tackle." Adam made a face at his brother and rolled his eyes. "And why don't you want your big brother on your team?" "Because I want to actually play and win," Adam smarted off. Jason turned around and attempted to tickle him playfully, but Adam was able to move into the corner out of reach. "I love these big cars!" Within the hour, the three friends had called Craig to come over to even out the number. Laura came out occasionally to watch the boys from the front deck. It was nice to see both of her boys running through the sand, strong and healthy. Expressing her thanks to God for that blessing, she went back into the house to finish packing for her trip. On the beach, it was a sight. Jason was not the athletic type, but never the less he was trying his best to get at his brother. Chuck was being the quarterback while Adam ran out to run the plays. Craig and Jason held their own, but it was difficult for them to plan out their strategy. Soon after being shamelessly scored on time after time, Jason and Craig collapsed in the sand trying to catch their breath. "Hey you old man! What are you doing! You can just play dead in the middle of the field!" Adam quipped at his younger brother, prodding him with his foot. "OLD MAN!" Jason yelled through the gasps of air. "Yeah right." "This is fun. We need to do this more often," Chuck said with a laugh. "So are you up to what we used to do in the olden days?" "What on earth are you talking about Chuck?" Craig chimed in, also resting on the sand catching his breath. "I am talking a good old fashion game of Trackdown," Chuck said with a wide grin. Trackdown was a game that the boys would play among the rocks and coves along the beachfront. They would split into teams and the object of the game was to track down the other team members and grab the flags that each member held. The team, who captured all of the flags, won the game. "Yeah, that sounds like fun. I get Jas!" Adam yelled out. "You traitor!" Chuck said, putting his hands on his hips. "He IS my brother," Adam fired back. But Jason looked at Craig with a wide grin. "What was I when you called Chuck as your partner when we were playing football? A mere person you just live with? Sorry, Craig and I are going all the way on this one," Jason remarked back. "Fine, but we get to be first in the field," Adam said, getting up and not really giving Jason and Craig a chance to protest. Chuck quickly followed him towards the cliffs that held many hiding places and childhood secrets. Fifteen minutes later, Jason and Craig set out to track down their adversaries. Chuck was the first to be spotted, moving along the cove. He tried to run, but Craig quickly cornered him. "I hate this game in the daylight!" Chuck grimaced as Craig held him hostage. "So do you want to go for the other prisoner to be?" Craig asked, holding Chuck like they used to as kids. "I would love to!" Jason said, enjoying the idea of hunting his brother down. With that, Jason made his way towards the rocks, Adam's favorite hiding place. Adam knew the rocks well and enjoyed climbing them to watch the waves crash against them. It took some time, but Jason finally spotted movement on top of the largest rock. He quickly made his way up the side of the rock. As he neared the area he thought that his "enemy" was stationed, Jason pounced out. "Gotcha!" But Adam did not jump. He was in a kneeled down position with his head in his face. Jason figured that it was a sign of defeat and quickly grabbed his younger brother's flag. "HA! You might be good at football, but the OLD MAN out foxed you my dear baby brother," Jason said in triumph. But his joy subsided when he realized that Adam was not responding. Going to his brother's side, Jason quickly put his hand on Adam's shoulder. "What is wrong?" "I don't know, I just got dizzy after I climbed up here," Adam said, still holding his head down. "I will be fine. The dizzy spells have not been lasting long. You just got lucky that it hit me." "What! I got you fair and square. You just can't handle that I got you," Jason teased him. There was no way Adam was going to get out of admitting defeat. "Jason, I am not feeling so well," Adam finally spoke up. It was unusual for Adam to say that he was feeling sick for fear of going to the hospital. Jason took the statement seriously and carefully scanned the area. Of all places for Adam to get one of his headaches, it had to be on top of the two story rocks. "Can you move with me?" Jason asked his younger brother. "Yeah," Adam said, steadying himself against Jason. Jason quickly, but carefully helped his brother start to climb down the face of the rocks. Craig and Chuck joined the brothers at the bottom. "Hey, what is going on?" Chuck asked, noting Adam leaning on Jason for support. "Adam is sick. We need to get him home," Jason said as they made their way up the beach towards home. Chuck grabbed Adam's other arm and helped Jason nearly carry Adam up the beach. Craig ran ahead to let Laura know that they were bringing Adam to the house. They were halfway home when Jason felt Adam start to shake and tremble. "Let's lay him down," he mumbled to Chuck. Chuck helped Jason gently lay Adam to the sandy ground. Adam's eyes were wide with fear, a look that killed Jason to see. Jason felt helpless when Adam had seizures because it seemed like there was nothing that he could do but stand back and wait for it to pass. He took his brother's hand and held it firmly while Chuck laid his hand on Adam's forehead. Adam's body started to shake a little, but it seemed like it was coming and going. "You are going to be just fine," Jason said in a low voice. Adam looked over at him; his eyes still filled with fear. But Adam took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Trying to wish the seizure away, he suddenly felt his body relax. Giving Adam a minute to get himself together, Jason and Chuck let out their own sighs of relief. By that time, Laura was running down the beach to her younger son. Jason caught her halfway to reassure her that Adam was doing okay. Sitting up to clear the fog in his head, Adam saw his mother's worried look. "I am fine Mom," He said, holding his head with his hands. "Did you take your medicine this morning?" She asked, looking Adam over for her own reassurance. "Yes," Adam said softly. "Jason, Chuck, Craig, help me get him up. I am taking him to the hospital," Laura said in a stern voice, but Adam protested. "Mom, I am fine. We do not need to go to the hospital. Dr. Coykendall said that I would have seizures off and on," Adam said, pushing everyone away so he could get up on his own. Awkwardly, Adam got back on his own two feet. "Adam, I really think..." Laura started in, but her youngest son interrupted her. "Mom, seriously. I am fine and I don't need to go to the hospital," Adam remarked. Laura looked at her son and then over to her other son. Quietly thinking, she paused before rendering her decision. "Fine, but as soon as I get back to the hospital, I am making an appointment with Dr. Coykendall and we are going to see him ASAP," Laura said. Adam was going to argue with her, but then he saw the motherly look in her face. "I will just leave for Mexico after I see what is going on." "But Mom, that excavation was important to you! You said it was going to be the dig of a lifetime," Adam argued. "And you are my son, one of the most important things in my life. Mexico can wait," Mrs. Kramer replied. "For now, you are getting back to the house and taking it easy." And that is exactly what Adam did. Laura called and was able to get an appointment for Monday afternoon for Adam. Chuck and Craig left for home after making sure that Mrs. Kramer or Jason did not need them for anything. While Adam slept on the couch, Jason sat there watching the California sunset. He could not help but wonder if Adam was going to have to deal with seizures the rest of his life. Secretly saying a prayer, Jason woke Adam up to go to bed and then turned in himself. In the morning, Laura expected Adam to stay at home for the day. However, Adam claimed that he was feeling better than he had in days and Laura reluctantly allowed him to go to school. She also had to promise to get Jason out of school so he could go with them to the doctor's appointment. Jason wanted to hear what the doctor had to say about his brother. The first two periods went great. Kara was making big plans for a nice weekend date and Jason got an "A" on a physics test. It seemed like everything was going to be fine, especially when Jason observed Adam goofing off in the hallway with Chuck during class change. He looked like any other seventeen-year-old, having a good time during what everyone else called the best time of his life. Realizing that he was worrying about nothing, Jason walked to his third period class whistling "Dixie" for some reason. But then his heart did a jump as he saw Kara running up to him as he was entering the door to PreCalculus. "Did you miss me that much!" Jason said, teasing his girlfriend. But her response was not what he had in mind. "You need to come to the bottom floor now!" Kara said, grabbing his hand and nearly pulling him behind her. "What! What is going on?" "It's Adam. He just collapsed and fell down the steps. You need to come quick! They said he is having a seizure!" Let the author know what you think of this story
