Within seconds, Jason had made his way to
his brother's side. Mrs. Thomas, Miss Meade and Mr. Layton were all
huddled around Adam, who lay at the foot of the bottom floor steps
motionless. Mrs. Thomas was holding Adam's head straight while Mr. Layton
checked Adam out for vital signs. Miss Meade, seeing Jason, turned to the
oldest Kramer.
"Jason, stay back. They have called the squad and your mother. Just let them handle it," She said softly. Even though Adam had always had trouble with Miss Meade, Jason found her to be a caring teacher under her "gruff" attitude. Miss Meade put her arm around Jason, who was struggling to figure out what was going on. Kara said Adam was having a seizure, but he was not moving at all. It was like he was in a deep sleep--- like a coma. That word stuck in Jason's mind and it caused him to gasp. "Jason, are you all right?" Miss Meade asked. "What happened? Did he fall down the steps? I don't understand..." Jason started to mumble. It was then that Chuck ran up behind him. He was out of breath, but still managed to talk. "They... are on their... way, Miss Meade," Chuck said as fought to catch his breath. "This should be a good case to take to the school board about why we need an intercom system that works in each classroom!" Miss Meade complained sternly. The old high school had an intercom system, but it only worked if the announcement came from the office. You could not buzz the office from a classroom nor could the office buzz an individual classroom. The teachers had often tried to get the board to let the school replace or repair the old system, but budget cuts made it difficult. "I ran as fast as I could. I would have came and got you Jason, but I thought that this time we needed to get help," Chuck said to Jason. "Its okay, Chuck. Were you with him?" Jason asked. He was still in a panicked state. If Adam bumped his head the right way, he could be in a coma. That thought scared Jason to death. "Yeah, we was on our way to class and he just fell over. Then after he hit the bottom, I ran up to him and his eyes were rolling back into his head. I was afraid to move him because he fell down the steps," Chuck answered. "Oh God! So it was not a seizure," Jason replied. His eyes got real wide as Mr. Layton monitored Adam's breathing. His eyes locked with Mr. Layton. "He is breathing Jason, very slowly but he is breathing," Mr. Layton assured him. "Jason, I think it was a seizure. He was out of it before he even hit the floor," Chuck said, trying to relieve Jason's mind. He knew what he was thinking. While Adam could have hit his head in the fall, Chuck was positive that something else was wrong. "I need to speak to him. Please let me see my brother," Jason pleaded to Miss Meade. Miss Meade was about to respond when Mr. Layton motioned Jason to his brother's side. Miss Meade started to shoo the other students off to class. Soon only Kara and Chuck remained in the stairwell along with Miss Meade awaiting news about Adam. "Go and meet the paramedics at the front entrance," Miss Meade instructed Chuck and Kara. The two teenagers immediately followed her command. Jason just looked at Adam's face. His normal color had drained from his face. Adam's skin was a bluish-gray tint. Holding his hand, Jason spoke to his brother. "Everything is going to be fine. I promise. You just keep yourself focused and everything will be just fine." It seemed like it was taking forever for the squad to make it to the high school. Soon Jason heard the sound of a siren in the distance. Before long, the paramedics was examining Adam and getting him ready to be transported. One medic took a statement from Chuck so the hospital would know what happened since Adam had not gained consciousness. They had just got Adam strapped in for the ride when his eyes began to flutter. Jason spotted the eye movement and immediately went back to his brother's side with Chuck right behind him. "Hey! How are you doing?" Jason asked, but Adam's eyes did not seem to focus at all. Staring straight forward, Adam seemed to be in another world. He looked like a doll with fixed eyes. "Don't worry, I am coming with you," Jason said as they started to wheel the stretcher to the squad. Chuck followed, telling Mr. Layton that he was going with Jason to the hospital. The teachers agreed and told Chuck that they would notify his parents of his whereabouts. The paramedics allowed Jason to ride in the front of the squad with them. Chuck ran to the Kramer van after Jason gave him the keys. While on the way to the hospital, Chuck personally called his mother to talk to her personally. When the squad pulled into the emergency entrance, Mrs. Kramer was there to meet it. She ran up to Jason who explained the events leading up to the incident. The paramedics unloaded Adam and took him straight behind the double doors, leaving Jason, Chuck and Mrs. Kramer in the waiting room. "Do they have the information on Adam?" Mrs. Kramer said. "I filled it out on the way to the hospital," Jason replied. He looked at his mother, who had that frantic mother look in her eyes. Putting his arm around her, Laura leaned against her older son. "They said he was going to be fine." "But what if he has done something from the fall!" Laura started in. Tears filled her blue eyes. "I wish your father was here." "Have you called him?" "Yes, but I had to leave a message with the main secretary. They said that he was out in the field. He is supposed to be checking in within the hour. She said that they would catch him then. But he is not going to be able to get her for a while," Laura fretted. She put her hand on her forehead, trying to calm herself down. "Do you have the cell phone?" "Yes, it is right here. I should have made him come to the hospital yesterday," Laura cried, remembering Sunday's events. "Did you tell them about his headaches and spells?" Jason nodded. "Mom, you didn't know that this was going to happen. He would have fought you about it anyway!" Jason assured her. Laura then asked Chuck to tell her what happened from the beginning to the end. But that did not ease her worry.
Fifteen minutes had passed when the cell phone rang. Laura immediately walked outside the emergency room doors and filled Mr. Kramer in. Soon she walked back in and joined the two boys. "I am supposed to call your father as soon as the doctor calls us back. I hope Dr. Coykendall is on duty. We had an appointment for one, so I would assume he is here somewhere," Laura remarked, looking around the lobby. The arms of the clock in the waiting room ticked around several times. Chuck went to get something to eat and offered to bring something back, but Laura and Jason was not hungry. The longer they waited, the more worried they became. "Mrs. Kramer?" a young lady dressed in scrubs said. Laura jumped, not seeing the young lady. "Yes, that is me," Laura said, jumping to her feet. "Dr. Coykendall said to send for you. Follow me," She said with a smile and led the two Kramers back into the ER area. They walked to the very end. Moving the curtain back, they followed the lady into the stall. "Adam! How are you doing?" Mrs. Kramer exclaimed as she saw her youngest son alert in the bed. He still had his clothes on and had a dazed look, but his eyes lit up when he saw his mother and brother. "All right I guess, thing are just slow," Adam muttered back slowly. It was if as if Adam was in a drunken state. "Hey kid! Don't scare me like that!" Jason said, going to the other side of the bed. Adam mustered a brief smile. He still had a funny color to him, but at least Adam was looking better than he did earlier. "What happened honey?" Laura asked, stroking his medium length hair back out of his face. "Don't really know? Everything just went fuzzy and then nothing," Adam said, still speaking slowly and in a slurred manner. "Did you hit your head?" Jason asked. "I don't know. My arm is bruised up and my back is sore, but that is all I know right now," Adam replied as he slurring his words. "Hello Mrs. Kramer, Jason," A familiar voice boomed behind them. "Dr. Coykendall! I am so glad to see that you are here. We had an appointment for later, but..." Laura replied. "I wish I could say that I am glad to see you, but not under these circumstances. Is Mr. Kramer here?" "No, I am supposed to call him when we heard something," Mrs. Kramer answered. Then her eyes turned serious and her voice became stern. "Why, what is wrong? Is Adam going to be all right?" "Just making sure that everyone is here. Adam is going to be just fine for now. I talked with his earlier about how the past hew weeks have been. We ran some tests and I have just now got the results. I also spoke with a well-known neurologist. So I am sorry for the time delay, I just wanted to have all the information before I spoke with you about Adam," Dr. Coykendall commented as he looked down at his clipboard. "That is fine. I would rather have all of the information at once," Laura assured him. "So what is wrong? Is it that bad? What do you mean by "for now"," Jason started in. He was anxious to hear what was going on. Dr. Coykendall smiled at him, remembering Jason's impulsiveness when it came to his younger brother. "It seems that Adam had a seizure," Dr. Coykendall said. "But he wasn't shaking and stuff? Are you sure he did not hit his head?" Jason interrupted. "You don't always have to tremble when you have a seizure. The brain is mysterious and can cause many different types of seizures that range from a second to several minutes with no signs of shaking," Dr. Coykendall informed him. "We did a CAT scan and double checked and it appears that Adam did not hit his head during the fall. Luckily his arms took the beating and shielded his head so he is going to have some bruising on the arms." Both Jason and Laura let out a sigh of relief. "But, while that is good news, that is not our main problem," Dr. Coykendall continued. "You see, Adam had a really bad seizure. He had what we call a Grand Mal seizure and that is not good."
