CHAPTER 14

When Adam came to his senses, he still felt very sluggish. He was lying on his stomach and everything hurt. He then noted that he was moving in a vehicle and he was not alone. Adam tried to move around, but his movements were still dull. He then saw in the shadows another person crawling over to him.

"Jason?" Adam whispered.

"It is Chris," The person answered in a low voice.

"Where is Jason?"

"They knocked him out. He is on the other side of me. I can't get him to wake up."

Adam felt like he had been hit in the stomach. He crawled past Chris with all his might to be by his brother. He felt for his face and started to tap Jason on the face.

"What did they do to him?" Adam asked. It was apparent that he was upset.

"They hit him on the back of the neck when he was trying to help you. You had a seizure and you almost stopped breathing. Jason was trying to help you. Now I am stuck here with you and we are all going to die," Chris said in a low voice. He did not want Red to hear them over the radio that he was listening to at the time.

At first, Adam did not answer. He could not believe that he had a seizure. He did not have epilepsy or anything like that. The last thing he remembered was trying to run up the side of the mountain. But all that mattered to him right now was making sure that his brother was okay.

"How did you end up here?" Adam asked as he tried to tap his brother awake again.

"Well, I could not stand back and watch them kill you guys. So I called your Dad to get help, but Rod caught me before I could tell him where they were taking us," Chris replied. "And then he put me in here with you so I could sink to the bottom of Orchard Lake with you."

"They are going to sink us in the lake!"

It was then that Jason started to stir.

"Jas? Are you okay?" Adam asked as he directed his attention to his brother. " Come on Jason! Wake up, please wake up!"

Soon Jason started to groan and move. "What is going on?" he muttered.

"We are going to die," he heard a voice say, but it was not his brother's voice. He raised his head and looked over at the other figure. "It is Chris."

He laid his head back down and then he suddenly sat straight up. "Where is my brother?"

"I am right here Jason," Adam relied. "How are you feeling?"

"How am I feeling? I am fine," Jason said in a shocked tone. "I want to know how you are. You scared me to death."

"I am okay, just tired," Adam responded. He still did not get the reality of the fact that he had a seizure. It was not that he thought that they were lying to him, but the fact that he just thought his brother was being over protective again. "Are you sure you are okay?"

"Yes, Adam. I am fine. Right now we have to get out of this van and get you to the nearest hospital," Jason said with authority. "You had a seizure and you almost stopped breathing. That is what has been going on all along. The day at the barn and I would bet anything that you were not totally level with me about the accident. You blacked out didn't you? That is why you had the accident."

"Keep it down Jason," Adam whispered back.

"Answer my question," Jason said in a direct tone.

"Yes, Jason. I did black out, but I honestly did not know why."

"Well, now we know and you are going straight to Dr. Coykendall if I have to drag you there myself."

"That is if we can get out of this van and not end up living with the 'fishies'" Chris quipped. "Don't you guys get it. We are in the back of a van that they are going to sink. We can't jump out because they have someone following us and the doors are locked shut."

"There is always a way out. We might just have to wait until we are in the water to make our move. Once it sinks, we will be able to get the doors open because there will be equal pressure. We just have to keep our heads," Jason replied with confidence.

"Where did you learn that from?" Chris said in a skeptical manner.

"When I was taking my driving classes at school," Jason answered.

"You mean you actually watched them," Adam said sarcastically.

"Yes, I did. And what were you doing instead?"

You could almost see Adam blushing even in the dark shadows of the van. "I was sharing quality time with that girl who came in from Andersville in the back of the room."

Chris had to chuckle with that response and patted Adam on the back. "You sly old dog. But I am glad that your brother was paying attention that day."

"As I said, we will just have to wait until the right time and then we will make our move," Jason said with confidence. The rest of the trip was in silence. All of the boys were nervous, but Jason was extremely edgy. He knew that he needed to get Adam to a doctor. He did not know too much about seizures, but he did recall Dr. Coykendall mentioning that sometimes people with head injuries had them. They could be dangerous or just a passing thing. But he also knew that people could die from them and it seemed like the seizures were getting worse. Jason could not figure out at first why Adam would all of a sudden start having them. And then it all clicked together. The football game! It had started after the football game when Adam hit his head on the goal post. Dr. Coykendall warned against hitting his head because it could cause more damage. This thought scared Jason to death. Why didn't they insist on Adam going to the doctor that night? Then he realized that all the "whys" in the world was not going to change anything. He needed to concentrate on getting Adam to the hospital, whether he liked it or not. But his thoughts were interrupted. The van stopped and all three of the boys were jerked out of the van and slammed up against the side of it. Jason looked over at Adam; his face was very pale. This was a bad sign and Jason knew that Adam could have another seizure at any moment. He just hoped that it would not happen until after they could get help.

"So you are really going through with this?" Chris stammered.

"Shut up! Not another word or I will pop you on the spot," red said as he led Adam to the passenger side of the van. The other two men grabbed Chris and Jason and escorted them to the other side of the van. Then they handcuffed Adam to the side mirror and Jason to the other one. After Adam was put in the passenger seat, Chris was placed in the middle followed by Jason in the driver's seat. No one said a word, but even in the darkness of the night they could see that the van was pointed towards the dark murky lake. Just looking down the small embankment to the lake was scary for Jason. He knew that it was going to take everything he had not to panic. Then he saw Red and the men maneuver around the van and then walk up to them.

"Just thought that I would say it has been nice knowing you and just in case you think that the brakes will work, think again," He said as he held up a set of hoses with a laugh. Then they put the vehicle in neutral and removed the key. "If I see this van stop, I will shoot the gas tank and take care of you on the spot."

Then the van started to move slowly at first, but picked up speed, as the water grew nearer with each roll of the wheel. Jason knew that the lake was very deep and even if the van went just a few feet off shore, it would still be totally submerged in water. Then he also knew that the water was going to be cold as well. Just then the van hit the water with a jolt that sent Chris and Adam into the dash and Jason against the steering wheel. Then the van started to float.

"Remember, don't panic and start pulling on the mirror. We need to get free of them before we sink," Jason called out to the others. With that, Jason started yanking on the mirror. Adam was doing the same as Chris just tried to keep his composure.

"We have one problem though," Chris said with his teeth chattering. "I can't swim."

"I will help you once I get free from this mirror," Jason as he was yanking violently on the mirror. The water was starting to come in at that point. It was hard to breathe at first because the water was so cold not to mention that it was dark outside. Just then the mirror gave way and Jason was free just as the water was reaching the top of the van. He looked over at Adam who was still struggling with his mirror. Chris was trying to help, but the mirror was just not giving. Jason knew that their time was limited because the van was going to totally sink any second. It was then that it seemed like the world just stopped.

"Jason! I think Adam is having another seizure!" Chris shouted in pieces since the water was rushing in from both sides. Jason moved to the other side of the van. He saw his brother's eyes rolling back into his head and his mouth was frozen in a distorted fashion. Then Adam just went limp. Just then the van lurched forward and then did a nosedive. It felt like forever, but the van finally reached the bottom of the lake. Everything was black so Jason had to feel around in the van. After the shock of the cold water got through his system, Jason was ready to go and pointed Chris towards Adam. Both boys started to pull on the handcuffs and the mirror, but it would not give. Jason knew that things were not looking good and that they needed to get help. He grabbed Chris and jerked him out of the van. He swam quickly to the top of the water. To his relief, their captors had already left.

"I want you to paddle your way to the shore and get help. Run down the road. Maybe someone is camping or something. Just hurry," Jason instructed him. "Just kick and paddle. It is only about 12 feet deep here, but you will be okay. Just don't panic."

Chris did exactly as he was told. He then shouted, "What are you going to do?"

"I am going back down after Adam. I am not leaving my brother down there to die," Jason muttered. Then he disappeared beneath the water. He knifed through the water at top speed and felt around for Adam. After feeling his hand, he kicked at the mirror with all the force he could muster. He was not going to leave Adam to die alone. He could not live with himself if he did not bring Adam back to the shore. His lungs were burning at one point, but he was more determined to save his brother. He kicked at the mirror one last time and the mirror broke off. Pulling Adam by the torso, Jason swam to the surface. It was hard swimming with the mirror attached to his hand, but he made it to the shore.

"We made it brother! We made it," Jason exclaimed just as he laid his brother on the muddy shoreline. He then checked to see if his brother was breathing, but he did not feel any air coming out of his mouth. Then he felt for a pulse, but he could not feel one. He knew then that he had to do something. Jason remembered back to his first aid class and cleared his mind. Jason then made sure that Adam's airway was not blocked and then tilted his head back. Breathing in a full breath of air, he counted to 5. He repeated the same procedure for about two repetitions. Then he placed his folded hands on his brother's chest and pumped his chest 15 times. He then checked for any sign of breathing, but there was nothing. Jason wished that he had told Chris to wait so he could have helped him with the CPR, but he knew he had to make do. He was not going to give up. Two minutes passed and there was no sign of life from Adam. Jason still continued to try CPR, even though he was exhausted. He did stop for a moment to catch his breath. The tears of frustration were starting to make their way down his face.

"Come on Adam. You fought for me once, I need for you to do it again!" Jason said, recalling what Adam had told him while they were fighting. "Adam, you have come to far for this to happen. Alyssa needs you, Dad needs you, Mom needs you, I need you!"

He kept up the CPR process, but it had been five minutes now. His arms were aching and he felt like he was going to collapse. "For God's sake Adam, breathe! Fight it!"

But the only sign of life that Jason observed was the sound of the frogs and crickets around him, humming their night songs.
