CHAPTER 14

Adam felt his whole body tremble as he stopped just by the trunk of the car. It was then that he noticed that there was just one person in the car. He ran up to the driver window. He saw a very terrified Kara who still had her hands glued to the wheel. Her make-up was running from her tears and she had a red mark or her neck from the seat belt tightening against her shorter frame. She looked up at Adam like he was a ghost.

"Are you alright Kara?" Adam asked. He felt so horrible because he was partly responsible.

"Yeah," she trembled. "But what one earth were you doing!"

"It is a long story. I am more concerned for you. Are you sure you are okay?" Adam asked as he helped Kara out of the car. She was still shaking.

"I am fine, but I would worry about yourself. You had better get out of here," Kara said as she looked back at Chris, who had driven the car back onto the road.

"I am not leaving you like this. It is my fault that you are in this predicament," Adam said leaning her up against the car.

"Adam, please listen to me--," But she cut herself off when she heard a vehicle approaching. She knew who it was going to be and that it was too late to stop the inevitable. She just hung her head as Ol' Blue came into vision. Adam looked over and saw the familiar van also. He knew that there was going to be big trouble as Jason ran up to them.

"What happened? Are you both alright?" He asked as he quickly put his arms around Kara and looked over at his brother.

"We are fine. I just swerved to avoid something. Everything is fine," Kara said, looking up to her boyfriend. Adam stood there looking at her with the most confused face. He then realized what Kara was doing. She was covering for him, but Adam made a promise after the Bill incident to never lie to his brother or hold any secrets.

Adam explained about the race and what had happened concerning Kara. Kara just looked to the ground the entire time.

"I appreciate your effort Kara, but I gave my word to never with hold anything from him again," Adam added at the end.

At first Jason just stood there trying to absorb everything, but he became enraged when he thought of the fact that Adam could have killed his own girlfriend because of his stupid pride.

"How could you do that! Have you gone completely crazy!" Jason said as he unloaded on his brother.

"I know, I was completely out of line. I am sorry," Adam said trying to reason with his irate brother.

"Sorry? You say you are sorry? Would that have brought Kara back if she would have been killed?" Jason ranted.

"Jason, calm down. I am fine," Kara interrupted, but it fell on deaf ears. Jason normally kept his cool, but it was obvious that he was furious.

"Jason, you are just mad and I don't blame you. Let's just get Kara's car back on the road and I will check it out to make sure everything is fine," Adam said pleadingly.

"Mad? I am furious. I am so sick of you pulling these stunts and this time you almost killed Kara!"

"Jason, I said..."

"I can't believe that I have been worried about you and it was Kara I should have been worried about all along. We were on our way to try to find you to make sure that you were okay and to think that this is what you were doing!"

"Jason calm down before you blow everything," Adam said softly side glancing towards Chris who was out of earshot, but Adam did not want to take a chance of blowing their cover.

"I really don't care right now! This one of the stupidest stunts you have ever pulled. I can't believe that I was dumb enough to put you first over Kara. All this time I have been helping you to try to get your life back because I felt guilty for being the healthy Kramer boy!"

Adam tried to interrupt, but Jason yelled back at him.

"Shut up Adam! I am talking. I even have almost lost Kara over it because I have been so concerned with you. And then you get into a car and almost get yourself killed all over again not to mention Kara! What if it would have been me that you hit?"

Adam just stood there. It was apparent that he was visibly upset, especially at the fact that Jason told him to shut up.

"Jason, I have told you that you are not to blame for the accident and that I am glad you are alright. I really do appreciate everything you have done for me."

"Well, you sure do show it. First you take off behind my back and almost get killed in a fire. Then you do not tell me about Uncle Bill until 10 years later and make me feel like a total fool."

"Jason I told you that I was sorry."

"Sometimes sorry is just not good enough"

"What do you mean by that? My apology is not good enough. I thought that I was your brother," Adam fired back with tears in his eyes. He had felt horrible about that too, but he thought they were beyond that. Now his brother was throwing it into his face again.

"You had better appreciate it that you are my brother because if you were not I would have decked you by now," Jason growled.

"Jason if that will make you feel better, go on ahead. Deck me! I deserve it," Adam said giving his brother an open shot.

"Now there is no need for that," Kara interrupted, but her comment was overshadowed by the anger of both of the brothers.

"That just shows how stupid and dumb you really are. I have given up a lot to help you," Jason said without even thinking. "Maybe you need those dummy classes."

"I never asked for your help. You are the one who decided to become my Savior!" Adam said in the heat of the moment. He could tell that he struck a nerve with Jason. He should have let it go at that, but his mouth went off before his brain could think. "I have to admit that I am a stupid idiot."

"I am glad we can agree on one thing."

"I am a stupid idiot for even waking up, for even fighting to live in that dumb hospital. I never told you this, but I remember you coming in and asking me to fight. I did and now it seems like I have been nothing but a burden to you and everyone else. I should have just died and then your life would be perfect again without your stupid, baby brother around to mess it up!" Adam said. But he did not count on Jason's reaction. Before he could react, Jason exploded and swung his fist back with all his anger and hit Adam so hard in the jaw that he was lifted up from off of the ground. Adam hit the ground with a thud. Kara just stood there in shock that Jason would hit Adam with such force. Jason had the same look come over his face as Adam tried to regain his senses. Jason had never hit him so hard in his life. To Adam, the world looked fuzzy, but he could make out the red car waiting by the road.

Jason knelt down and tried to help Adam up, but he shoved him away. Tears were streaming down Adam's face as he slowly and awkwardly got up. He debated on whether he should hit his brother back or just let it go. He had made enough bad decisions for one day, he decided to just walk away.

Things were bad enough between the brothers and Adam did not want to make things worse. Besides, he still had a case to solve with or without Jason, and that was just what he was going to do. He got into the car with Chris who immediately questioned him about what was going on.

"I don't want to talk about it. Right now we have a job to finish," Adam responded to Chris's numerous inquiries.

Later that night, Adam arrived at the dark house. Jason was already in bed as well as his mother. He was thankful for that because he did not want to have to explain why his chin was swollen. He made a bag of ice and went to bed. Jason heard Adam go down the hallway, but he was still angry as well. He could not believe that his brother actually felt that way about surviving the accident. He decided to talk to him in the morning after they both had cooled down. But that did not happen. Adam got up earlier and left before Jason was even awake. He wanted to go and talk to Alyssa before school and left his mother a note telling her of his whereabouts. Jason was at first aggravated because they always went to school together, but thought that he would just catch him at school. He waited for Adam in the parking lot that they always parked in, but when the first bell rang, Adam's Trans Am was not in the lot. Jason got out of the van and met up with Kara on their way to their first class. Jason told Kara about how things were going and Kara said that maybe Adam still needed some time on his own. Jason reluctantly agreed, but said that he was going to talk to Adam after school no matter what. At lunch, everyone including Alyssa, Chuck and Craig came to the van to go to the usual lunch hangout except for Adam. Everyone offered encouragement to Jason, including Alyssa.

"Jason, he loves you. Just remember that. He will come around," She said patting him on the back as he lifted her into the van. He then put her wheelchair in the very back.

"I hope you are right Alyssa. He is determined to solve this case and I am going to help him whether he likes it or not," Jason said as he got into the driver's seat.

"Well I do know that he is meeting Chris after school. He can't avoid you forever," Alyssa responded.

"I have to admit, at first I was a little harsh with you guys about the car, but now I really want to know. But I did not want it to split you guys apart," Chuck spoke up. The boys had really not discussed the issue since Chuck was upset over it.

"You didn't split us up Chuck, we split ourselves up. I am glad that al least you realize that we are doing it because we care. We would love to find out that you car is legal, but it is not looking good," Jason said as they made their way back to the school. "Right now I just need to talk to Adam, but he is totally avoiding me on purpose and I am not going to beg around to talk to him. I am still upset too."

"I will try to talk to him seventh period," Chuck said.

Chuck was prepared to talk to his best friend last period. When he saw Adam come into the room, he became a little nervous. Then he noticed that Adam had a pass in his hand and started to walk back to the said exit door of the cafeteria/ study hall. He then noticed that Chris was waiting on the other side of the door. Chuck had to think fast. He made his way up to Mr. Donald and asked to go to his car for his book. He then quickly went to catch up with Adam, but just as he was making his way to the second parking lot he saw Adam get into his Trans Am with Chris and leave the lot through the back entrance.

Chuck knew that Adam could not handle this case alone. He went to the science area to the Physics classroom to talk to Jason. Mr. Sanders, a cranky old man, at first frowned, but allowed for Jason to be excused for a moment. When Jason heard what Chuck had seen, he slammed his fist into a locker. He could not believe that their team could be split up like that. That he would leave Jason out like that. Jason's first impulse was to go after his brother, but his anger got the best of him. He thanked Chuck who could not believe that Jason was not going to go after him.

"If he thinks he does not need me, then I don't need him," Jason said, walking back into class. Chuck just shrugged his shoulders and made his way back to class before he got caught.

As Jason drove home though, different thoughts came into his head. He thought of the night of the accident when his brother flat-lined in the squad. He thought about the night that he was almost killed trying to save Alyssa and then he thought about the moment when Adam told him about Uncle Bill. His brother was stubborn and he has always been stubborn. But Jason was sick of being the one who always had to patch things up. However, he also loved his brother. He needed his brother and he did not know if he could live with himself if he did not knock some sense into Adam. He turned the van around and made his way back towards the car lot. He knew that his mother had a late class that night and he at least did not have to report in. He just hoped that Adam had not gotten himself into something.

At the same time Adam was standing in the middle of nowhere waiting for their client to bring one of the cars. He thought about his brother. He knew he should have talked to Jason, but he just could not bring himself to do it. Adam knew that they were a team and that he should have included Jason despite their personal problems. He knew that he did act irresponsibly when he decided to race Eric and he did need to make some changes, but Jason needed to make some changes too. He wondered if things were ever going to be the same between them and he hoped that it was not too late. He looked over at Chris sitting in his brother's car. Adam had left his car back at the car lot. Chris, noticing that he was being stared at, looked over at Adam and smirked.

"Hey, Gumby. Got a problem?" He asked referring to Adam's swollen jaw. It was still a little swollen and red.

"No, just bored," Adam said ignoring his comment.

"Well, you had better stay on your toes! Rod said that we have a lot of auction cars coming and we are going to need to do some major work on them," Chris said. He was seated in the passenger side of the restored black El Camino. He had his feet propped on the dash with the seat laid back.

"What is wrong with them?"

"Hurricane Grace. That is what their problem is. We need to take those waterlogged beauties and make them shine again!"

"Do you ever think about the fact that families may buy those death traps?" Adam asked.

"My thought is that there is a sucker born every minute. That is their problem. I am here to make money and if they are too cheap to buy new ones, then that is their problem," Chris responded without hesitation. "Why are you going soft cop boy?"

"No, I was just wondering," Adam replied.

"Well, I sure hope your brother is still with us. We are going to need his services to get clear registrations for them."

"Don't worry about him. He will not let us down," Adam said with confidence. At least he hoped that was true. Jason had never let him down, but that was before last night. Adam did not blame him though. He had acted stupid for the sake of his pride and keeping Chris's trust. He just hoped that this case did not split the Kramer brothers up for good.
