CHAPTER 14

Jason made it to the car lot where he saw Adam's car. He got out of the van and walked to the back area of the lot. But there was no sign of anyone. He walked over to the office and peered into the glass window. Again, there was no sign of anyone. This would be a great opportunity to do a little "paper work" while everyone was out. He walked over to the side door and lifted the clump of grass that grew there. He had noted the other day that Rod had hidden something in that area when he was getting ready to leave. Sure enough, Jason's suspicions were confirmed when he found a small silver key. He unlocked the door and placed the key on Rod's desk. Jason walked over to the tan file drawer and started to thumb through the various files. As he went through the files and made copies of what he needed using the small office copier. He felt kind of smug and could not help but to think of what his brother was going to say when he found out that Jason had found exactly what they were looking for all along. Concerned that Rod would arrive any minute, he booted up the computer and looked over the list that Rod had left for Chris. It talked about the shipment that he needed for Adam and Chris to pick up that very afternoon. Then he noticed his own name.

"Have Jason switch over these registrations. We need to change the status of the titles from flood to normal. I need this soon because the cars are due to be shipped out on Thursday. Don't mess this up. This is our chance to make it with the big leagues."

So Jason started on that work in between his snooping. Every so often he would make a trip to the van and stash the copies under the carpet in the backseat area. He could not wait to let his father see the information he had found. He also could not believe that it was going to be that easy as he called his father from his cell phone to fill him in on the latest news.

Meanwhile, Adam and Chris had just intercepted the first shipment of "flood" cars. There were two cars on the flatbed truck, both under the cover of a green cover. A man got out of the truck and handed Chris some papers.

"So what do we have this time, Ray?" Chris asked the short, but stout guy. Adam guessed that he was of Mexican descent because of the color of his hair and skin.

"Well, we have a black BMW and a very sweet, but salty red 1968 Mustang convertible," The man said with a slight accent. "It will look great with a little bit of work."

"Sounds like you are interested?" Chris said with a smile.

"Me? No way! I don't want a water log!" the man answered. He handed him the keys to the flatbed. "Rod should be along with the other car."

"Rod? I thought he was up to something else?" Chris answered quizzically.

"We needed to get these two in and one hot one. Well the flatbed can only handle two so he was drafted. He should be coming along soon because we are taking his car back with us to San Diego," Ray replied as Chris got into the flatbed and started the engine.

"Okay, Adam I am going to go on ahead and take this back to the lot. You bring the other car with you and I will meet you there," Chris said as he situated the mirrors and seat.

It was about six o'clock and Adam figured that Jason would be worried, or maybe not since their fight. He knew though that he should at least play it safe.

"Okay, but could you at least call my brother and tell him I will be late?" Adam asked.

"Sure will, hopefully he can get some of the paper work done," Chris said slipping the truck into gear.

Adam watched as Chris gave a slight wave and drove on down the nearly deserted road. It was amazing that not many people traveled the road that led to the old airport. But it was a road through open farmland so it was not used very often.

"You are a new one, never seen your face before," Ray said to Adam in a friendly tone.

"Yeah, I have done a little body and engine work," Adam said deciding to take part in the casual conversation.

"You are just a young pup," Ray said back. He then proceeded to tell Adam about how he has started out in the business when he was about Adam's age. Adam tried to pry him with information, but it was a fact that Ray was just a transportation guy with little knowledge of the operation. After about an hour, Rod arrived with the car, a very nice dark blue Lexus. Rod got out of the car and smiled at Adam and Ray.

"That is going to fetch a pretty penny. I think I already have a buyer in mind," Rod said. Adam could not believe that he was going to get to drive a Lexus, but his hopes were easily dashed. "I am going to drive it to the potential buyer right now even."

"What am I going to do?" Adam asked. He was totally bewildered by the change in plans.

"I have one more regular car coming. He stopped and got gas so he should be here any minute. I needed an average car for the lot," Rod said as he drove off in the luxury car. "Hey Ray, after the switch, just leave my car at the warehouse and I will get back to it tomorrow."

"I love how they change plans," Adam quipped. He was starting to get hungry and he was losing his patience.

"Get used to it in this business, especially if you are just a gopher," Ray said leaning up against the El Camino. They both waited about five more minutes when a car came into view. Adam recognized it as an early 90's model Cavalier. It was blue with a sunroof with a sporty look to it. He could tell by the sounds of the car that it was a standard. Adam knew his night was not getting any better. Since his accident, he had not driven a standard shift car. Craig's truck was a standard and that is how he learned how to drive one. It took Craig about six months to fully train Adam how to drive one, while it only took about one week with Jason. Adam remembered that very well. Jason thought it was funny that his brother, the car wizard, did not master the coordination skills needed to drive a standard shift vehicle at first. Adam was not amused. Now he was faced with driving one after his accident when his coordination skills were definitely not as good.

The driver, also a man of Mexican descent, got out of the car and swiftly made the switch. Ray quickly got into the El Camino and waved to Adam as the two left Adam alone in the middle of nowhere. It was almost dark now and Adam was starved. He just wanted to deliver the car and get home. He started the car and put the gearshift into first gear. He slowly let out on the clutch and applied the accelerator. The car stumbled at first, but then caught on. He shifted successfully through to third. He was almost ready to shift into fourth gear when he forgot to put the clutch in. The car made an awful noise and the engine cut out. Adam was extremely frustrated knowing that he was going to have to repeat the whole process again.

"This is going to be a long night" Adam muttered to himself as he went through the gears again, hoping and praying that he could get the car back to the lot at a decent time.

By seven-thirty, Jason had finished all the paper work he could and was getting ready to lock up when he heard a truck pulling in. He quickly shoved the papers that he needed to copy in the file folder and closed the drawer. He would just have to get the rest later. Jason had quite a bit according to his father. Carl was going to look over the papers when he got home tomorrow night. By then, he heard a set of footsteps approaching the office and he quickly got into position. He was hoping that it was Adam. He was worried about his brother, but he really wanted to talk to him. But his hopes were dashed when he saw the small frame of Chris, who looked surprised.

"How did you get in here?" Chris said.

"I used the key like you said to before," Jason said as he was shutting the computer down and whirled around in the chair to face Chris.

"Oh, I didn't remember showing you that. Well, did you get some stuff done?" Chris said, accepting the explanation.

"Yes, but I have to wait for the confirmations so that will not be until tomorrow. Have you seen Adam?"

"Oh yeah, he said to tell you that he would be a little late. He is bringing in a car. He should be here soon. Could you help me unload the truck in the meantime? He should be here by then."

"Sure, why not," Jason said as he got up from the computer. He wanted to be there when Adam came in.

"I am sorry, but I guess you will have to wait until tomorrow to get paid since Rod is not here," Chris said as they made their way to the truck.

"That is okay, just means a even bigger pay tomorrow!" Jason said light-heartedly. He just wanted to talk to Adam and show him what he had found and patch things up between them. He was relieved to hear that he was okay, but he had a bad feeling in his gut for some reason. He hoped that it was just a false alarm.

At the same time, Adam had finally made it to fifth gear. He was pretty proud of himself. After killing the car about five times and stalling out in second two times, he had finally mastered the standard automobile again. With the sunroof peeled back and his favorite station on, he almost forgot about his stomach growling. Adam thought about what he was going to do after he got home. He was going to settle things with Jason because he could not stand to fight with his older brother. The cool air felt good as it swirled around him and kicked up his hair. The scent of tilled dirt filled the car. Most people did not like that smell, but it was refreshing to Adam who loved everything that country living had to offer. He was about to downshift going into a turn when he felt the world go a little fuzzy. Adam shook his head hoping to clear his eyes, but the feeling did not leave.

"Oh, no not now, " Adam thought to himself as he was in the process of slowing the car down. But he was not fast enough. Everything was like a whirlwind around him as the world blurred around him, but he could not move his arms or legs. Nothing responded and his own thoughts slowed down. He felt the car leave the road. Feeling an intense fear from his stomach he mentally braced for the inevitable. The sound of twisting metal, breaking glass and then he felt the impact right before the darkness fully engulfed him. His last thought was of his older brother, wishing that he could have one more minute to say he was sorry.
