"This
is so nice," seventeen year old Alyssa said as she laid her head on her
boyfriend's chest. They were lying on the shoreline of Bear Lake,
watching the moonbeams dance off of the ripples in the lake. The small
campfire did not dull the spectacular view of the stars in the clear
autumn sky.
"Maybe for you, but this has been an awful week!" Adam Kramer chimed in; his arms were cradling his head. Alyssa immediately raised up and glared into his blue eyes. "I was not talking about this week, I was talking about now! You and me and peace!" She said sarcastically. "We can finally just lay back and enjoy the moment. Besides, I thought that you would be happy since you do not have to go to school until Monday. You have not had to put up with Miss Meade for a whole week!" "Yeah, but I have also had to put up with Jason and Dad constantly looking over me and drilling me on school stuff. Then Mom would hardly let me do anything either, not to mention that I can't drive for six weeks," Adam said as he pushed his medium length blond hair out of his face. "I am at everyone's mercy." Alyssa smiled and gave him a hug. "That is the good part. You are at my mercy and I am glad that you are relaxing." She gently kissed him on the cheek and laid her head back down on his chest. "Besides, I think it is great that your Dad has taken a home job assignment while you are recovering. As for Jason, you should feel lucky to have a older brother that cares about you that much." Adam knew that she was right, but it was a trying time for him. He could not drive or play video games. He had to take his medicine on time and he had to watch the type of programs that he watched on TV for awhile. Luckily, though, he had not had another seizure since both brothers almost drown in Orchard Lake on their last case. It was the brothers' first chance to solve a mystery since Adam's accident and he had to smile at the fact that now no one in their community would be a victim to the car scam. But trying to lead a normal life had taken its toll. Adam started to suffer from seizures following a hit to the head during a football game. He also missed that--- playing football for the Emerald Beach Wildcats. It was hard to see his archenemy in his quarterback position, but he knew that he would not be able to finish the season. "Why the frown?" Alyssa asked, noticing the grimace on Adam's face. "I am going to miss Homecoming this year. There is so much that I am missing right now," Adam said sadly. " I also miss the freedom of driving my own car." "Well, you have Jason and me to get you around so," Alyssa said. She had a specially equipped Cherokee since she was paralyzed from the waist down from a car accident. Even though she was enjoying being the chauffeur for once, she knew that it was very hard on Adam not to be able to come and pick her for their dates for the past week. "Besides we still have the Homecoming dance that is next weekend and I will have the cutest escort there!" "I thought you didn't want to go to the dance because you would be a side decoration?" Adam asked quizzically. He had asked Alyssa about the dance in September, but she was complaining about not being able to dance in her wheelchair and would rather spend her time at the beach alone with Adam. "Well, I thought about what you had said. You know, about not letting this chair be my prison and you are right. So we are going to get a dress this week," Alyssa said with a smile. "It will be the first dance I have ever went to and I am going to enjoy it as much as I can." Adam smiled at that. He knew that she was having a hard time with it because she felt that she would not be able to physically dance like the rest of the students. "I am glad to hear that. Well at least I don't have to worry about being the "prince" this year since I am not on the existing football team." "You are still on the team, besides you will be back next year better than ever," Alyssa said as she looked up at Adam. "I thought you did not want to be a part of that sissy stuff?" "I don't! Seriously I don't want to be a part of that royalty stuff. I just thought that you would have made a great princess, that is all." He really did not want to be crowned anything, but he would have loved to have the opportunity to see his Alyssa crowned princess of the dance. But he knew that more than likely that Eric's girlfriend Lindsey Chapman would have that opportunity. Eric Peterson was Adam's worst enemy since third grade and his replacement as the current quarterback. Adam was not happy with that at all, but he knew that he could not play this year until his head injury healed more. Alyssa just looked up at him and smiled. She knew that Adam wanted the best for her, but she knew how real life was by now and she was just happy having him alive. Adam and his eighteen-year-old brother were not just normal teenage boys living in the rural area of Emerald Beach, California, going to school and enjoying the beach life. They were following in the footsteps of their father, Carl Kramer. Carl was an investigator for the State of California and had made a name for himself nationwide. The boys' mother, Laura Kramer, was an archeologist and a college professor. She was currently teaching a semester at the University of California at San Diego to be closer to home. She had hoped her boys would have found her occupation to be more appealing, but she knew that her sons had detecting in their blood. The boys had solved many cases on their own; including busting up a car ring that had bigger connections in New York State. Unfortunately, though, solving cases had become more complicated because of an accident that left Adam with a brain injury. It was not apparent how exactly this injury was going to effect their investigating team in the long run, but both boys are determined to overcome the limitations. Alyssa knew the danger that Adam faced when investigating cases and she hoped that she could assist him one day. However, for the time being, Adam was on a strict rule of just trying to recover and take things more easily and everyone was bound and determined to make that happen. She just smiled and enjoyed the stillness of the lake and the feeling of Adam's muscular chest. Alyssa was happy that Adam was alive and she was going to make sure he stayed that way.
But Alyssa was not the only person who had the same mission of looking after Adam. Dark-haired Jason Kramer felt the same way. Even before the accident, Jason felt that he needed to watch over his more impetuous and adventurous younger brother. This over-protectiveness sometimes caused problems between the brothers, but Adam knew it was simply because he cared about him. Jason had especially become more protective since the accident when he almost witnessed his brother die in the back of a squad. This feeling of helplessness and guilt fueled Jason's need to look after his brother. It was not that he thought that Adam could not look after himself, but for the reason that Adam's condition was so unpredictable at this time. If something was going to happen, he wanted to be there. This mental thought had fueled him to his present location, just on the other side of the cove of Orchard Lake. "I still can't believe that I am here with you spying on Adam," Jason's girlfriend of four years stated rolling her eyes. Kara Dobbins was used to this and sometimes it even angered her, but she had gotten herself past that now. "I am not spying, I am checking," Jason responded. "I am not listening or anything." "Probably because you don't have the stuff to eavesdrop with yet," Kara said sarcastically. Jason just smirked at her comment. "I just want to make sure he is going to be fine," Jason said after a moment of silence. "He is with Alyssa for Heaven's sake. She will keep him in line." "I don't doubt Alyssa, but let's look at the facts. He had to carry her out to the point because her wheelchair could not get through the woods. So if he would have a seizure, how is she going to get him to the Cherokee and get help, let alone getting herself there!" "Jason, she has a cell phone. She can call for help." "Not when it is dead. She can't have a signal clear out here!" Kara just slumped back on the ground and shook her head. Jason let out a sigh and turned around to face his girlfriend. It was then that he noticed how the moonlight lit up her face and shimmered off of her long curly hair that lay in ringlets. Kara, sensing that she was being watched, opened her eyes. "What are you thinking now?" "Just how beautiful you really are. I forgot how much I liked the way your hair just curls up into waves," Jason said softly. Kara blushed at the comment. It had been awhile since they had stopped and enjoyed just having each other. "You know, it is peaceful here. No wonder your brother brought Alyssa here," Kara said as she sat up and leaned on Jason. Jason smiled back at her and gently kissed her on the forehead. "It is the Kramer charm and keen romantic mind," he said grinning. It was nice to see his brother happy. Everyone thought he was going to be a bachelor all his life, but he always said that he was just waiting on the right girl. Evidently, he was right. "So can we now go and find our own romantic place?" Jason looked over at his bother and Alyssa and then back at Kara. Maybe he was going to the extremes. Reluctantly he agreed as they quietly disappeared into the night.
"So what is this surprise that you kept talking about?" Alyssa said, interrupting the sounds of the crickets and frogs that aligned the lake. "Oh, I almost forgot!" Adam said as he got up and started messing with the small cassette player that he was able to fit into his backpack. "I have been thinking about our small problem and I think I have a solution." "What problem?" Alyssa asked quizzically. "You will see," Adam said with a sly grin. He pressed the play button and waited for the song to start. "I picked this one out just for you." "Oh, boy, I bet it is some heavy metal rock ballad," Alyssa said, referring to Adam's love of hard and classical rock. They did not share the same music preference. Adam smirked back at her. "You know, you actually look like Jason when you do that face," She said with a chuckle. Then the song started to play. It seemed so familiar to her. Then it clicked. It was one of her older favorite songs by Bryan Adams--- Heaven. "How did you come across this song?" she asked in shock. "Chuck told me that you had mentioned Bryan Adams as being one of your old favorites so I went and borrowed the tape from Jason. I listened to it and I really liked what this song had to say so I thought I would play it for you for our first dance as a couple." "That was so sweet, but Adam I left the wheelchair back at the Cherokee. I can't move around like that." "But you can!" Adam said as he walked over to her and picked her up into his arms. He slowly swayed with her to the music and whispered the lyrics into her ear. Alyssa was truly touched. She could feel the slight breeze in her hair and when Adam would face her towards the lake, she almost felt like she truly was in a Heaven on Earth. She knew that she would never forget that night as the moon lit up the beautiful lake that sparkled like a hole full of diamonds. Then Adam placed her back on the blanket. "So how was that?" Adam said proudly. "I told you that you could dance." She responded with a kiss on the lips. "Now that was an answer that I like!" He replied with a school boy grin. However, unseen and unknown to Adam and Alyssa, a stranger was waiting in the shadows. As the young couple continued to enjoy the company of each other, other eyes were filled with rage and pure hatred. The site of such happiness sickened the stomach and every time the couple kissed, anger shot through the veins. Revenge was going to be sweet was the thought as the night hid the secret of the nightmare that was to come. |
