CHAPTER 14

It was just a little over an hour later when the door to the basement prison opened. All three of the Kramers looked up from their discussion to see what Tarah had planned for them.

Tarah did walk through the door with a sly grin on her face. "You have a visitor." It was then that the two men brought a familiar face in to them.

"Adam! Oh, God you are all right," his mother jumped up and ran over to him to hold him. Adam looked just fine, but he would not look her in the eye. She backed up when she sensed that something was really wrong. "What is wrong, honey? What did they do to you?" she asked tearfully.

"Nothing Mom, I am fine" Adam replied softly. Jason though sensed that there was definitely something going on. Carl just stood there, contemplating what they were going to do since they were now all four prisoners. When Alyssa alerted him through the sheriff's department, he did alert the sheriff and James that something was wrong. He was hoping that they were trying to find them at this minute. But how would the police and James find them in the basement of an abandoned house?

"Well, now that the family reunion is over. It is time to get down to business," Tarah said with a direct voice. All four of the Kramers stood next to each other waiting for her demands. Carl was sizing the situation, but knew that Tarah and her goons had guns. He did not want to push things with there being guns involved. He had to have faith that a break would come soon.

"The way I see things. I lost my father and someone has to go. I want the man who caused me this pain to suffer," Tarah said. She stood very tall and looked very serious in her black jeans and gray Old Navy T-shirt.

"I will gladly give my life for my family. It is me that you are after so why don't we cut to the chase and let my wife and sons go," Carl spoke up. Laura gasped at the statement.

"I thought about that myself, but it will be your family that suffers the most. You will be dead so that is not a fair trade for my father's life," She responded. "You see, my father hanged himself. He took his own life. So you have any idea how that makes me feel. It is not like he died because he died. He chose to die and leave me here alone."

The room was silent as Tarah's voice rose with every word. Jason could tell she was very angry and hurt. "It was bad enough they put him in jail where I could not be with him. But they sentenced him to life without parole. I lost my father, but I could still see him. Now that he killed himself, I am left with a lot of questions. I wonder if he even loved me since he took his own life. It is a different death when it is a suicide. Death is chosen, not awaited."

"I am sorry Tarah, I am sure that he did love you in his own way," Laura said, trying to appeal to her. But Tarah's mind was already made up. She had this planned in case her other schemes did not work. This was her ultimate plan and she was going to put it into action.

"I am sorry too Laura, but I have to do what I have to do," Tarah replied. Then her gaze turned to Carl. "I decided that I want you to live with the same pain that I will have to live with the rest of my life. Even if I do go to prison, I will live happily knowing that no matter what, you will not have your family back."

She then stepped back and spoke to the whole family. "One of you is going to sacrifice you life for the rest of your family and I already have a volunteer."

"It will be me, I will gladly give my life for my sons. Just leave my family alone," Laura stepped forward.

"No, you are not the one I have chosen to do this," Tarah said with a coyly grin.

"Take me, just leave them alone," Jason said. He was totally scared out of his wits, but he still felt that there would be a way out of it. That they were going to escape.

"I told you that I have a volunteer," She said looking over at Adam. Adam just looked to the floor. "We have already discussed our plans and he is more than willing to do this to save each of you. Such a loving son."

"There is no way over my dead body that I am going to allow my seventeen or eighteen year old sons to kill themselves!" Carl burst out angrily.

"I second that," Laura said, moving over to be in front of Adam. Jason just looked at his brother. He could not believe that his younger brother was willing to go through with this without a fight. He knew that Adam had no plans of fighting back just like at school with Robert.

"It is my life. I can decide for myself," Adam said with hardly any emotion. It was apparent that he was in a deep depression.

"That is crazy! You are a member of our family. You owe it to us to live," Jason exploded. "You know what happens to people who kill themselves!"

"I owe you to live like this. To be a murderer," Adam fired back at Jason.

"She killed Randall while trying to kill Dad for Heaven's Sake. She is playing on you Adam. You are worth more than that. You have a reason to live," Jason yelled back at him. He was so angry with his brother right now.

"Yeah, to burden everyone I love," Adam quipped back.

"No, I used to think that Mom and Dad meant too much to you to do that," Jason replied immediately. Adam felt his stare penetrate right through him. "I thought I meant more to you than that."

"You all do. I am going to do this so she will not hurt any of you. She gave her word that you will be released unharmed," Adam said with a stern voice. "I am doing this because I love you."

"You are doing this because you are a quitter!" Jason yelled back.

"You are insane! You are going to trust the word of a murderer. Once you are dead, how do you know that she is going to live up to her word," Carl chimed in.

"Look, I would like to stay and enjoy this family reunion, but we have to get some deeds done so we can get you back home," Tarah said. She was clearly happy with the situation. "It is time to go Adam. And Carl, I may not be one of People Magazine's Most Beautiful People, but I am NOT a liar."

Laura immediately went over and held her son. She was not going to let him go, but Adam shrugged her off. Carl just glared at his youngest son in disbelief. Jason at first turned his back to his brother, but Adam walked straight up to him and looked him in the eyes. For a short moment, the brothers' eyes met and several thoughts were exchanged with just one look. For a minute, time was frozen. Adam then walked away to go with Tarah.

"No brother of mine would do this. My brother is smart and he would find a way," Jason said just as Adam walked out the door. The words stuck in Adam's head.

Jason soon heard the sounds of two car doors. That sound was followed by the sound of a car engine coming to life and slowly driving away. He was so angry with his brother, but he knew that they had to do something. He looked over at his mother and knew that she was thinking the same thoughts. After talking to Carl very quickly, they made their move. It was all or nothing as far as they were concerned.

"Guard, or whoever you are, please come down here!" Carl yelled as he started to bang on the door. He repeatedly yelled until one of the men dressed in black appeared.

'What is your problem?" the man asked with an attitude.

"It is my wife, she is a diabetic and the stress has just made her sugar go completely off I think," Carl said pleading to the guard. "You have to help us or she can die."

The man was hesitant, but then he stared at Jason who was holding a motionless Laura.

"Fine, I will get some pop or something," he muttered, closing the door and walking up the steps.

Soon the man returned with a can of Pepsi. He not only came to the door, but also walked into the prison to check Mrs. Kramer. It was then that Jason spotted a gleam of hope. As the man kneeled down to look at her eyes and before Carl could even make a move. Jason made his move. The oldest son, who had never really played football, recalled practicing with his brother not too long ago. He remembered that Adam had said to always go for the thighs if you really want to take them down. That is just what Jason did. Before the man could even make a move, Jason hit him square in the thighs with a forceful tackle that would have made Adam proud. The impact of the man's head hitting the floor temporarily dazed his senses, giving Carl enough time to fully frisk him for a weapon. But he did not find one. Laura quickly got up and crept upstairs while the Kramer men held their attacker down to the floor. They did not even notice she was gone until they glanced around and saw her with a small handgun in her hands.

"He must have laid it down getting the pop. I found it by the cooler in the kitchen," she said with a smile.

"Laura, you could have been killed. There could have been more of them up there!" Carl said. He quickly made his way back over to his wife and took possession of the gun.

"I have been around detectives enough to know how to watch out for myself," she quipped back at her husband.

"And you, that was a foolish move son, but I am glad it worked," Carl said, not knowing if he should be mad or happy about his son's decision.

"Dad, I knew that he did not have a gun. I kept track of it," Jason explained as he still had the man pined to the cellar floor. Then he turned his attention to the man. "Now someone is going to tell me where my brother is!"

"I am going to go and call for help. I know that you always carry your cell phone Carl," Laura said as she went back upstairs.

"Yes, it is in my jacket pocket. They took my jacket when I was brought here," he yelled out to her.

Meanwhile, Jason was busy trying to get the man to talk to him, but the man remained quiet.

"Look, you are already in enough trouble. You are going to jail. If my son dies, then you will be an accessory to murder. You can save yourself a lot of trouble and years if you cooperate with me," Carl said with an even voice. The man looked at him like he did not believe a word he said. Carl saw that look and responded, "I give you my word. She is gone and she is not going to come back and save your butt. Help me save my son."

Reluctantly, the man said, "Okay, I will take you on your word. Tarah and Fish are going to the bluffs where I found him earlier today. We are the only three people involved."

"What are they planning to have him do? What is the plan?" Carl said, hoping for more information. It was then that Laura yelled from upstairs that she had the sheriff on the phone. Carl told her to have them hold on for a minute.

"I am waiting," Carl said giving his full attention to the man.

"They are going to have him drive a car off the cliff," He said. "She really wants you to suffer the way she does."

"But no one is going to believe that my brother would kill himself like that!" Jason exclaimed.

"Yes, they would. He is going to write a note, taking responsibility for that guy's death and then Tarah and Fish are going to call me when the deed is done. I was to leave you here and then make a phone call to another guy. This guy was going to do something to you so you would not remember anything and all three of you would be found safely outside your home. I was supposed to go and tamper with the furnace so it would appear that you all made it out before the carbon monoxide fumes got to you. Tarah always keeps her word," the man confessed.

"Leaving my brother to take the blame for Randall Hartley's death," Jason muttered. It was then that he realized that they would be half way to the bluffs by now. He knew that his brother would not fight them so he had to do something. It would be too late by the time the cops got there. He quickly bolted up the stairs and past his mother. He heard his father yell after him, but Carl could not let that man out of his custody.

"I am going to save Adam. Tell the sheriff to meet me at the bluffs pronto!" he said before Laura had a chance to object.

Running out the back door of the farmhouse, he saw the van sitting over in the weeds by the driveway. "Thank God!" he said as he ran to the van and sped away towards the bluffs.

"Please God, I know that you have really went out of your way to help him with the accident, but please save him from himself. I don't want my baby brother to die like this, not this way, not now."
