CHAPTER 14

Adam tried not to be scared. He did not want to show any fear at all in front of Tarah and her gooney friend. He had been doing a lot of thinking on his short ride to the bluffs. His brother's words echoed in his mind. Jason was right. Adam Kramer would never be such a chicken that he would chose the easy way out of something. It was then that he realized that he was not that he was not thinking of ending everything when he stood at the top of the three story cliffs. It was a long way down and he remembered that fear that overcame him right before the darkness came the night of the accident. Adam recalled the fear of the unknown, the fear of pain and most of all, the fear of being lifeless and not feeling the warmth of his mother's hugs. He remembered thinking about his father, not hearing his many lectures about doing better in school. Then there was Jason. Many things were thought when he reached that name on that night. How could he leave his big brother? They were a team. No one stopped believing in him and he knew that he could not let his family down. He did not want to end his life; he just wanted to get some type of control of it. For the first time in a while, he felt like he had control of his life. He had finally found a way off of the roller coaster ride that started when Randall Hartley drove off in his father's car. Adam took in a deep breath as he sat in the back of the old and very loud Buick.

"You know what you have to do. I have the phone and your family will be set free unharmed. I always keep my word," Tarah said, turning around in the bench style front seat to face Adam. Adam just sat there in silence.

"You know, you are a good kid doing this for your family. You must love them a lot," she added in the silence. "I loved my father too. I would have done anything to have him when I was a little girl. Every girl needs her Daddy you know."

"Then why did you take away Rachel's father?" Adam asked, almost in a mumble.

The statement did not settle well with Tarah. "Look, it was a mistake. That car was rigged for your father. I do feel bad about it, but what can I do about it. I can't resurrect the dead!"

Adam just smirked at her comment.

"Did you finish that letter?" she said, trying to change that subject.

"Yes, I copied it as best as I could from the back of a car," Adam replied, holding the suicide letter up that he agreed to write.

Tarah grabbed it and looked at it carefully. "You should have paid more attention in handwriting class, but it is readable."

"No, I should not have went over the side of a mountain in a piece of metal," Adam quipped back.

"You have a smart mouth," Tarah mouthed back. "But right after we get over this hill, I will not have to worry about you anymore."

Adam just remained silent. He saw the open field coming into view that preceded the bluffs. He knew that he had to think of something fast. Something that would save his family and himself as well.

At the same moment, Jason was just trying to get to the bluffs. He was truly scared and he was not about to stand by and let his brother kill himself over something he did not do. He took every shortcut he knew to get to the bluffs, but he knew that they had a big head start on him. The van's cell phone kept ringing. He knew it was his parents, but he did not want to pull over to take the call. He had the van fully wound up. Jason had to grin as the van screeched around the turn that put him onto the dirt road that led to the cliffs. Adam had done a good job of keeping the van in good running condition. He just hoped that he would not be too late.

"Just hold on baby brother, I am coming," He said to himself. The van thumped and thrashed around on the bumpy dirt road, but Jason never took his foot off of the accelerator.

When they reached the bluffs, Adam was ordered to get out of the car and stand over by the side. He still did not have a plan and had no idea what he was going to do.

"Okay pretty boy, let's walk over and get this over with," Tarah said without much emotion. She pointed towards the cliff that Adam was standing at earlier. Adam at first just stood there looking at her, but then he noticed that her partner was reaching for his gun. Adam knew that he did not have a chance to escape a bullet in an open field, so he obeyed her commands.

His mind was running a mile a minute. Adam knew that if he even tried to grab on to anything on the way down off of the cliffs, that Tarah would just have him shot to death. She needed him to die to cover up for her own murderous plot in her mind, not to mention she needed that deep feeling of revenge quenched before she would do anything else in her life.

Adam all of a sudden just stopped in his tracks. Tarah stopped and looked at him with pure anger. She placed her hands on her hips and pulled her sunglasses off. "What is the problem? We have a deal you know."

"I was not planning to go out this way," Adam said, trying for time.

"You were earlier today. I saw you myself," the man in black with the gun chimed in.

"I was thinking, stupid," Adam fired back. "Do you really think that I was just going to jump off the side of the cliff?"

Both Tarah and the man looked at him. "We have a deal, remember? Your life for your family?" Tarah said with attitude.

"I know. I promised you that I was going to go over that cliff, but if I am going to do this, I am going to do it my way. The way that I planned it," Adam said with a matter of fact tone.

"Oh, boy, what is your dream death?" Tarah quipped.

"Well, I love cars and I was going to fly to my end in my car. I love my Trans Am and I was going to take it with me so to say," Adam said. His hand showed the take off of the car from the cliff with his smooth outward and then downward hand motion.

Tarah and the man looked at him like he was insane. Both were speechless for a moment.

"We do not have time to go back and get your car," Tarah growled. "You will just have to run and jump. Leap off of the cliff. You can fly that way."

"No, I can't do that. I love cars and nothing would take the place of flying in a car over the cliffs," Adam said again.

"I think this boy has watched "Thelma and Louise" way too much," the man mumbled, referring to the last scene in the movie.

"Actually the Dukes of Hazzard and Burt Reynolds are closer to it. Thelma and Louise ramped into the Grand Canyon, the Duke Boys and the Bandit did it over water, not to mention that they both had cool cars," Adam said with a smile. "Thelma and Louise had a car that I would not own even if it was a convertible!"

"I can't believe this," Tarah said with disgust. Then she calmed herself down. "So you are saying that you want a car."

"I guess so," Adam muttered, looking out at the cliffs.

"Fine," Tarah said as she threw him the set of keys to the old Buick. "There, you have your car."

Adam picked up the keys and frowned at the site of the old beat up car, but the man in black was not too happy about that decision.

"Hey, that is MY car!" he said in protest.

"It WAS you car," Tarah fired back. She was very upset at the glitch in her plans.

"That was the first car I ever owned. My mother bought that car for me," the man spoke up. But his plea fell on deaf ears.

Tarah then grabbed the gun out of his hands and pointed it straight at Adam. "Now, I think it is time that you go."

Adam knew then that he had stalled for as much time as he could. He was hoping that he would have some type of salvation. But no one was coming to the rescue. It was up to him to get himself out of this mess for his sake and for the safety of his family.

He calmly walked to the car and opened the door. The musty smell of the car overcame Adam. The old tan car was not only a huge heap, but as big as a battleship. He got into the car and set the seat and mirrors to his liking. Tarah just stood there, getting angrier by the second. The owner of the car just stood back with a frown of disgust on his face. He was not happy with losing his car, even though it was a junker.

Adam tested the door and then the radio. Tarah walked up to the car, gun still visible, and leaned over to look him in the face.

"I am getting a little upset here and my finger is getting a little trigger happy," she said with a cold and threatening tone. Adam did not want to mess with a gun situation so he turned the car on over to start it. Slowly, the car thundered to life.

Adam knew that he had to carry through with the plan. He was afraid to pull anything with the safety of his family on his mind. Tarah must have read his mind because she held the cell phone up as a reminder. Revving the engine, he settled into the old car. "This is it," he said to himself. "Here I am, a survivor of another accident, about to get into another one."

Deep down though, he knew that the impact of this accident was not going to be an event that anyone survive.

"Okay God, you got me through the first one, get me through this one. My life is in Your Hands, just tell me what to do and I will do it," he said as he closed his eyes for a minute. The click of a bullet going into its chamber brought him back to his present situation. He did not have to turn his head to see the source of the sound.

He opened his eyes and floored the accelerator. The old car backfired and then sprang to life. He felt the hood rise in response to the gas pedal. The tires banged and thrashed the car around because of the very bumpy terrain. Adam did not know what he was going to do, but he knew that he had to get that car over that cliff to save his family.

At the same instant, Jason reached the top of the hill. He saw in the open field a man, a woman and a cloud of dust that trailed a vehicle heading straight for the cliffs. Jason floored the van, but the only response he got was a popping noise. The front tire of the van blew, causing it to come to a sudden halt. Jason jumped out of the van, not even thinking about who was around and he did the only thing he could do. He yelled and he prayed.

"ADAM! JUMP!" He yelled over and over. Jason glanced over at where Tarah and the man in black were standing, but they were already running for the woods for their escape. Normally, Jason would not want to see the enemies escape, but his brother was more important. He kept yelling over and over, hoping Adam would be able to hear him. But Adam could only hear the loud roar of the car and then the feeling of weightlessness as the car pitched forward into the endless California sky.
