CHAPTER 14

Jason ran for all he could towards the car, which was now airborne over the Pacific Ocean. It was then that his foot stumbled and he fell to the ground. His face dug straight into the ground and an enormous burning sensation was felt in his right arm. But Jason did not care about his physical pain or his exhaustion. All he cared about was in that car that was now out of sight over the cliff. Jason braced himself for the deafening sound that was to follow. And then it was reality.

"ADAM!" Jason yelled, but all he heard was silence and the sound of the ocean waves smashing up against the cliffs below. Jason tried to get up to walk the remaining fifty feet to the cliff's edge, but his arm would not hold his weight. Then he heard the sound of sirens and cars screeching to a halt on the dirt and grassy field. Jason looked over his shoulder and saw the sheriff's deputies run into the woods in pursuit of Tarah and her accomplice. One of the men even had a search dog. But Jason had to see for himself. He had to look over the cliff even though he knew that Adam could not have survived the impact. Jason crawled on his stomach the rest of the way to the cliff, only pausing momentarily to get his breath.

Finally, he reached the edge of the cliff.

"Dear God, please let his death have been short and painless. He was my brother and I loved him dearly. Please take good care of him," Jason silently prayed. "He did not mean to do this, he did it to save our lives."

Then Jason looked over the edge with tears pouring from his eyes.

"I appreciate the prayers, but right now I just need your hand," A voice said from down below. Jason opened his eyes, but his vision was blurred from the tears. He took his left hand and wiped the tears away only to see something that he thought he would never see again. He saw the blue eyes of his brother looking up at him from about 3 feet down the steep cliff.

"Adam, is that you?" Jason said in disbelief.

"I can't exactly get to my driver's license right now so you will have to take my word on it," The figure smarted back at him. Jason knew then that it was Adam for sure and he sprung into action. He tried to brace himself and extended his right hand down to his brother. It was then that he saw the blood stream down his arm and onto his hand.

"Jason, are you alright? Where is that blood coming from?" Adam replied with a horrified look on his face.

"I guess I must have done something to it. But I will be fine, take my hand," Jason answered. It was then that he put the whole picture together. Right before he fell down, he heard a cracking sound. The sound of a gun was being fired behind him. He must have been shot when he was running to help Adam. But it did not matter now. It was too late to switch arms. He felt his brother's hands grab his right hand and Jason was not going to let go for nothing.

"Okay, I want you to try to help me out here. I am going to try to pull you back up," Jason said with determination. Jason tried to pull back, but he just did not have the strength to do it. He could not pull Adam's weight.

At the same moment, Adam was trying to get traction with his feet, but his feet were now dangling in air. He tried to get a foothold, but he could not curve his body in that way.

"Come on Adam, push up!" Jason yelled again.

"I can't! I can't get a foothold anywhere. I am just stuck here in air," Adam shouted back. He could feel his brother's cold blood starting to run onto his own hands. "Jason, you are hurt. Just yell for help!"

"I can't, I am on my stomach and I can barely breath as it is. Just hold on," Jason panted back at him. There was silence for about a minute. Both boys were in deep thought. But then Jason felt something tremor in his hands. He looked down at his brother, who had a blank stare in his blue eyes.

"Adam, are you there? Can you hear me?" Jason asked with worry in his voice.

"Ye... yeah," Adam mumbled.

"Adam, did you take your medicine?" Jason asked. He had an idea of what was happening and it was the worst time for it to happen.

"N-n-n-n-o," Adam stammered back. Adam felt the world start to go in and out. He knew that he had to stay awake, but it was becoming an impossible thing to do. Jason's stomach sank when he realized that Adam was having a seizure. Sometimes stress and traumatic situations could bring seizures on, especially without medication in the bloodstream.

"Fight it Adam! Fight it!" Jason grunted, feeling the weight of his brother become heavier and heavier. But Adam knew that he could not fight it. The darkness was coming and going. Adam felt Jason starting to slip towards the edge of the cliff, as his ability to hold on became weaker. Fearing that his brother was going to meet the same fate as he was going to, Adam looked up at his older brother. Once again the brother's eyes locked since they last saw each other in the farmhouse.

"Jason, I can't fight it off. You have to save yourself. I am going to drag us both over the edge. Just let go," Adam said, looking straight into his brother's deep brown eyes. Jason could not believe what he was hearing. "I don't want you to die too."

"No! I will never let go. If you go, I go with you," Jason muttered back. He was holding on with all of his strength.

"N-n-n-o Jas. Just let me go, you are slipping too," Adam mumbled again. "Mom and Dad can't lose both of us."

"They can't afford to lose one of us. I can't lose you," Jason said, but he noticed Adam was starting to go in and out. He wondered if any one of the sheriff's deputies had noticed their predicament. He was praying that help would come soon. His arm was burning and the pain was starting to weaken his hold on his brother. He had to keep Adam alert.

"Adam, I may not say this too much, but I do love you. When you were in that accident, I remember knowing that you were in that wreckage. I never felt so helpless. Then you flat-lined in the back of that squad, I felt like a part of me was dying too. I may tease you sometimes about Mom and Dad having you to give me a playmate, but it was one of the greatest gifts that anyone could have given me. You are a soul mate of sorts and I am not going to let you die," Jason said, his voice was emotional. "I am sorry that I said that you were no brother of mine."

There was a pause and then Adam answered. "Can I tell you something, just between us?"

Adam heard the silence, but knew his brother would not betray his trust.

"Just in case something happens, I was at the cliff thinking about ending it all earlier in the day. I felt like I had no control in my life and that the people that I loved the most were suffering because of me," Adam said, stammering. "But then I realized that I had control just by not doing it. By living, I had control of my life. I had to drive that car over that cliff to save you guys. I had made plans to jump out. I did not want to leave you."

Those words were healing to Jason. He knew then that his brother was still a fighter with a lot of courage. It had to take a lot of courage to drive that car over the edge and Adam did it so his family would be safe. Jason gained some strength from that. It was now his turn to be courageous. He had to hold on to his little brother for as long as it took.

"Jason, please look after Alyssa," Adam mumbled again. Adam could feel the seizure starting to take him over. He could not fight it anymore.

"Oh, no you don't. You are going to take her to that dance this Saturday night and you are going to make it one of the best nights of your lives," Jason growled back with determination. It was then he felt the full load of Adam's weight and he felt his body slide closer to the edge. Jason was losing his grip and his own footing. He dug his feet into the dirt, but it did not help. He could not get a good hold.

"Jason, don't move! I am coming!" a female voice yelled from somewhere. Jason immediately recognized his mother's voice.

"Hurry Mom! Adam is over the edge!" Jason yelled out. The sweat was now running down his face, giving him a tickling sensation, but he did not let go.

Laura did not gasp or panic at the site of her sons. She immediately started pulling on Jason with all of her might. Jason was surprised at the strength of his mother, who only stood about 5'4". With every pull, Jason felt his body slide back an inch. His arm was burning with pain, but he still did not let go of his brother.

When Jason was totally back on the ground, Laura reached over the side for Adam. "Okay Jason I have him. You can let go." But Jason could not bring himself to let go yet. "Jason, I have him. I will not let my son fall. Let go and help me." Jason obeyed his mother and let Adam's hand slowly slip from his grasp. He got up and help his mother pull Adam to safety.

When Adam was first brought up to the edge of the cliff, his whole body started to shudder. Laura looked over at Jason. "He is having a seizure." She immediately turned him onto his side and held him close. She then saw the wound on Jason's arm. "What happened Jason? Where is that blood coming from?"

"I guess I got shot in the arm," Jason said lifting up his sleeve. Sure enough, there was a bullet wound in his upper arm.

"You just lay there and keep an eye on your brother. I am going to get help," Laura said as she ran back towards the rest of deputies arriving. The first set of deputies and her husband was in pursuit of Tarah and the man in black. They did not even notice Jason at the cliff's edge. Laura assumed that they thought that the boys were with Tarah and her sidekick. But her own intuitions caused her to look towards the cliffs and now her sons were safe, for now. She directed an officer to call for an ambulance, got into the van for the first aid kit and blankets, and then hurried back to her sons. One of the deputies joined her to help.

Jason was facing his brother, who was laying on his side still.

"We made it little brother, we made it," he said in a low tone. He reached his hand over to grasp Adam's right hand. He felt Adam's hand squeeze back as in response to his statement. "Mom saved the day."

About that time, Jason felt a set of hands grasp his right arm and tightly wrap it with cloth. The pain shot up his arm and he could feel the pit of his stomach start to go. He was totally exhausted at this point. He looked over to his side. He saw his mother covering Adam with a blanket and holding him on his side through the seizures. "Help will be here soon." She would say ever once in awhile as to reassure herself as well as her sons. Jason then heard on the officer's radio that they had captured both the man and Tarah. A sigh of relief was shared by all. It was well understood that Tarah was going to be back for revenge if she was not caught. It was then that Jason let himself sink into the welcoming darkness. A place where he felt no pain and no worries. His little brother was safe and that was all he needed to know.
