CHAPTER 17

"This is Alexis Davenport," said Mr. Allenby, as he introduced his new teacher’s aide on the first day of school for his English class at Bayport High. "She will be aiding me in the class assignments and helping anyone who is having difficulty, don’t delay in asking any questions. Ms. Davenport, do you have anything to say?"

"Just that I have this opportunity to help and learn, before I get a job teaching on my own, I have always wanted to teach," commented Ms, Davenport.

An hour later, after the class was over, Joe Hardy was just leaving with his sister for this was their last class of the day, Ms. Davenport came up to him. "Hello, is your Dad, Fenton Hardy, by any chance?" Ms. Davenport asked.

"Yes, he is," Joe answered, "And this is my sister, Elizabeth."

"I never knew Fenton Hardy had a daughter?" Ms. Davenport asked.

"I don’t do investigations like my brothers do, so not many people know that Frank and Joe are my brothers except people that know us and the family," Elizabeth replied.

"Are you two twins?" asked Ms. Davenport.

"Yes, I’m older than Joe by 5 minutes," Elizabeth replied. "Why do you ask about our Father?"

"I have an appointment with him this afternoon, I’m looking for my Father," Ms. Davenport replied.

"I hope he finds him for you," Joe said, with that he and his sister left the classroom. As he and Elizabeth went to their lockers, they met up with their brother Frank.

Vanessa walked up to Joe and put her arms around his waist and asked, "Are we still on for Friday, Joe?"

"You bet we are!" Joe said excitedly, "I have been waiting to see this movie for months!"

"Elizabeth, do you have a date for Friday?" Vanessa asked.

"No, Jonathan’s going out of town, he’s leaving as soon as school is out, we’re going to go out next weekend," Elizabeth replied.

Turning towards his brother, Joe asked "Frank, are you coming to the park with the guys?"

"Well, Mr. Bates, said that the class had a major project that is going to be a major part of our grade, so I need to get home early to start the research, so me and Callie are going to head there as soon as she meets me, but tell the guys I’ll be there tomorrow," Frank replied.

"Okay, I am meeting them in the park, see you at home," Joe said.

"Elizabeth, do you want to come with us?" Frank asked.

"No, I thought I would watch Joe play basketball," Elizabeth replied.

Joe met up with Chet, Jonathan, Biff, Tony, and Phil at the local park and started shooting some hoops with the ball that Joe brought along with him.

Later on, after everyone was exhausted from the game, they all sat around in the grass.

"Well, that was some game guys," commented Elizabeth.

"It was fun too," Jonathan replied.

"Why didn’t Frank come along?" asked Chet.

"He and Callie are working on a project for class," Joe replied.

"I know, I have the same project, but I already picked my subject, I just have to do the research, me and Biff were teamed up to do it," Phil said.

"Well, you know Frank, he wants to be thorough when it comes to school projects, so he decided to get an early start," Joe said.

"Have any of your teachers assigned you anything yet?" Biff asked.

"No, but Ms. Anderson announced she has a project in the works for history class," Joe replied.

"Have she let you know what exactly it is?" Tony asked.

"No," Joe looked at his watch. "Well, it’s getting late, Dad told me this morning that he may need mine and Frank’s input on a new case he’s been working on," Joe said, getting up.

Well, see you tomorrow," Chet said. With that everyone got up and went to their respective vehicles and went home, Phil and Biff headed off in the same direction as they also wanted to get started on their project as well.

As Joe and Elizabeth got closer to the Hardy home, they weren’t surprised to see another car parked along the curb. At the Hardy household, it wasn’t unusual to see strange vehicles parked there, as Frank and Joe’s father, Fenton Hardy ran his detective business out of their home.

Joe and Elizabeth came into the house, they walked upstairs and Joe set his backpack on top of his dresser, while Elizabeth did the same in her room, and they walked into their brother’s room. "Hey, Frank how is your project going?" Joe asked.

"Fine, when is out next practice, Joe?" Frank asked.

"Tomorrow, after school. Coach wants us to make sure that the new players know the meaning of teamwork," Joe replied.

"Elizabeth, are you going to be a cheerleader again?" Frank asked.

"Yeah, I think Vanessa wants to try out this year as well," replied Elizabeth. "Why doesn’t Callie try out?" Elizabeth asked.

"Is there anything negative about Callie, it is her total disinterest in anything sports-related," Joe said.

"Well, she does try," Frank said.

"I wonder who that is," Frank asked, as he looked out the window, at the white Toyota at the curb.

"I think I know, it’s Mr. Allenby’s new aide, she said she had an appointment with Dad this afternoon," Joe replied.

As they walked in, they saw their Aunt Gertrude, who they haven’t seen all summer. "Well, I have missed you all, since I have been to Florida," Gertrude Hardy said. Gertrude was their father’s sister that lived with them.

"We did too," Elizabeth said.

"Does Dad have a new client?" Joe asked.

"Yes, he does it is a young lady looking for her Father," Gertrude replied.

As they were sitting down to eat some milk and cookies their mom had made, they looked up and saw their father emerging from his office, followed by Ms. Davenport. Fenton Hardy, showed her to the door, "I’ll see what I can do to locate your Father, you have given me what looks like to be some good leads," Fenton said.

"Thanks, for taking my case, I have had no luck trying it on my own," Ms. Davenport said.

His client having departed, Fenton Hardy came into the kitchen, and sat down with his sons and daughter to enjoy some of the cookies his wife had made. "So, how was your first day of school?" Fenton asked.

"Same, as usual, getting into the routine," Joe replied.

"When is your next football practice?" Fenton asked.

"Tomorrow," Frank replied.

"Elizabeth, are you going to be a cheerleader again?" Fenton asked.

"Yes," Elizabeth replied. "I like watching sports just as much as Frank and Joe."

"Yes you do," Joe agreed. A trait which she took after both her brothers.

Later that night, after dinner. Frank and Joe settled in front of the television to watch their favorite movie, that they had watched several times.

"Aren’t you tired of watching that movie boys?" Gertrude asked.

"No," both Frank and Joe replied in unison.

"Is Elizabeth already in bed?" Laura Hardy asked.

"Not really, she’s in her room on the computer," Joe replied.

After it was over, both went upstairs and got ready for bed, and both had no problems getting to sleep.

The next morning, 6ft 1in Frank had his usual difficulties getting Joe out of bed. "Wake up sleepy head, I’ve already had my shower, you need to take yours before school," Frank said. "Elizabeth is already up."

Joe opened his blue eyes and looked into Frank’s brown ones and said. "All right, already, I was just in the middle of a good dream." Joe got out of bed and stretched his 6ft muscular frame, as opposed to Frank’s lean frame. Elizabeth, had blond hair as well as shared the blue eyes with Joe, but she was 5ft 10in and was very slim.

Joe got his shower, and he went downstairs to find Frank eating a bowl of cereal, he fixed himself some, and after they were done, they left for school.

Later on after a relatively normal day of school. Football practice was just ending. "That was brutal, makes me remember when I first started playing with the team," Joe said. "Are you still going to play a light game of basketball at the park with us?" Joe asked his brother.

"Yeah, but a short one, Dad said he wanted our help on the new case, remember?" Frank replied.

"Let’s pick up Elizabeth, the try-outs should be over now," Joe said. With that they picked up their sister at the gym, where the try-outs were being held. "Did you make it?" Joe asked.

"Yes, and so did Vanessa," replied Elizabeth. "She had to leave right after we found out, as her Mom needed her to help with a new cartoon."

"That’s wonderful, I’ll congratulate her tomorrow," Joe said.

They went on home after a brief game of basketball, "Dad, do you need our help?" Joe asked as he saw his father sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper.

Fenton looked up, his brown hair and brown eyes, he looked like an older version of Frank, but he was 6ft 2in. "Yes, I would like you to help me with Ms. Davenport’s case, I got a call about a possible new case, that is potentially more serious, and may require more of my time," Fenton replied.

"That’s no problem, we just need to look at whatever she gave you yesterday," Frank replied.

"Okay, let’s get to my office," Fenton said. "Elizabeth, did you make it on the cheerleading squad?" Fenton asked.

"Yes," Elizabeth replied. "I have homework already, they couldn’t fit study hall in my schedule this year, so I have to it, see you all at dinner." With that Elizabeth went upstairs and disappeared into her room.

After going over what Ms. Davenport had, Frank and Joe went up to Frank’s room, and logged onto the Internet, they entered her father’s name and came up with several possibilities, "I wonder why she didn’t think of that?" Joe asked.

"Maybe, she’s been busy with college, or simply hasn’t had the time," Frank replied. "Now we can give these guys a call, we can do that Saturday or Sunday, maybe then, we’ll make sure the right one is at home."

"What if his number is unlisted?" Joe asked.

"Then we can check other types of public records, he’s bound to leave a paper trail," Frank replied.

There was a knock on the door. "Have you found anything?" Fenton asked.

"We got several names, we’re going to check them out this weekend," Frank replied.

"Good, then maybe by Monday, we can tell her where her Father is," Fenton said. "Also, your Mom sent me up here to tell you dinner is ready."

"Okay, we’ll be right down," Joe said.

* * * * *

"Come on Joe! Our big date is on for tonight!" Frank said. "And we have to go to school," he added.

"I’m awake," Joe said. "Is Elizabeth downstairs?"

"Yes, she even beat me up this morning," Frank replied.

Later, after school and practice, Frank and Joe are busy getting ready for their dates with Vanessa and Callie.

"Is Callie going to meet us at Mr. Pizza?" Joe asked.

"Yeah, then we’ll head over to the theaters at the mall, and see the movie, she’ll take me home, and you can drop Vanessa off at her house," Frank replied.

"See you guys later," Elizabeth called as Frank and Joe left the house.

Later on that night, after Frank, Joe, Callie, and Vanessa were walking out of the theater, they exchanged comments on how great the movie was.

After Frank had left with Callie, Vanessa got into the van with Joe.

"I thought we would go to the new deli place near the park, and we could walk around there some," Joe replied. Vanessa agreed.

Arriving at home, Vanessa got out of the van, "See you tomorrow!" Vanessa shouted as she counded up the stairs of the farmhouse, where she and her mother lived.

Joe drove on home, he shut off the van, locked it and turned on the alarm. He was just about to make his way to the house, when a van came screeching by, it stopped suddenly, and two masked men got out, they were coming towards him!

"Help!" Joe screamed for his father and brother as they tackled him, he tried to struggle but with their combined weight, it was hard, then one of them whipped out a chloroformed rag, and placed it over his nose and mouth, he tried to hold his breath, but one of his attackers punched him in his stomach, which made him breathe in the fumes, he felt light-headed and fell into unconsciousness.

They picked him up and started carrying him towards the open door of their van.
