As Fenton went
home with Sam driving, as he was too distracted to drive, he was thinking
of what he was going to tell Laura and Elizabeth about Joe’s condition, he
also felt anger at the Draven’s, they kidnapped Joe, repeatedly beat him,
and they expect to be let loose, they could try to kidnap Joe again or even
Frank, or someone else’s child. He appreciated the efforts of the Bayport
Police Department and the DA for their efforts to keep them in jail. He
knew it wasn’t easy to bring up an emergency session to make sure bail was
denied, and the more evidence they had against the Draven’s the more likely
bail would be denied, even with the admission of Alex Draven, that they had
killed the boy, they had kidnapped before they took Joe. He would get
satisfaction knowing they aren’t loose to do this, and Joe is back home, he
would also feel a heck of a lot better when Joe started improving.
Fenton was broken out of his thoughts, when Sam pulled into his driveway, he immediately saw the door to his house open up, and Laura came running up to the car. "Fenton, did you find Joe, is he safe?" Laura frantically asked, "Where is he?" "He’s at Benton Trauma Hospital, honey, Frank is with him," Fenton tried to soothe her. "Is he going to be okay?" Laura asked, on the verge of breaking down. Fenton got out of the car and hugged her tightly. "He’s bruised up, but the doctor said he should be fine in a few days, he also has pneumonia," Fenton told her. It was then that he noticed another car in the road, in front of his house, he recognized Alexis Davenport’s car. "Why is Ms. Davenport here?" he wondered out loud. "She stopped by to see if you made any progress on finding her Father, but I told her an important case came up and you haven’t had the time, and she wondered why Joe hasn’t been I, school, I didn’t know how to explain it to her, she only arrived ten minutes ago," Laura explained to her husband. "Mr. Hardy," Alexis said, coming out of the Hardy home. "How’s your case going?" she asked. "We caught them, and are getting ready to wrap it up," Fenton replied. "I’m sorry, I haven’t had the time to find your Father though, this case was very important, I have been working on it for the last eight years." "That must have been an elusive bunch of criminals!" Alexis exclaimed. "I’m glad you finally caught up with them." "Yes, they were, but we finally caught up with them," Fenton repeated, not sure how she would take knowing the details. "Good, I’ll be going," Alexis replied. "I’m in no hurry, like I said to you before, but I was concerned that Joe hadn’t been to school." "Well, I’ll be right on it, after I finish wrapping this case up," Fenton said. "Wait a minute, I came across something while working on this case, wait a minute and I’ll make a call, okay?" "Okay," Alexis said, confused. Wondering why Fenton Hardy was avoiding the subject of his son not being at school. But maybe she would eventually find out soon enough. She walked back into the house with Laura, Sam, and Fenton. Fenton went into his office as she went into the living room, Elizabeth immediately got up, and went in her father’s office, and she closed the door behind her. "You found him, didn’t you?" Elizabeth asked. Fenton nodded, as he picked up the phone and started dialing a number. "Who are you calling?" she asked, confused. "An officer I met, while trying to track down a lead on Joe," Fenton replied, after he had finished Sam had entered the office and sat down in a chair on the other side of Fenton’s desk. "Sam, do you know what Dad is talking about?" Elizabeth asked. "I don’t know, who is he calling?" he asked. "Someone, he apparently met while trying to find Joe," Elizabeth replied. "Oh. Probably the officer to give we met in Southport to give him an update on the case," Sam answered. The phone rang three times before it was picked up, "Southport Police Department, how may I direct your call?" a female voice said on the other end. "Can I speak to Sergeant Raymond Davenport?" Fenton requested. "Okay, he happens to be in at the moment," the operator said.
After a few minutes, there was an answer, "Officer Davenport speaking, can I help you?" he asked. "This is Fenton Hardy, I wanted to ask you a question," Fenton replied. "Oh, Mr. Hardy, have you found your son? Ask away," Officer Davenport added. "Yeah, we found him, he’s in the hospital," Fenton replied. "On to my question, what is your Father’s name, if you don’t mind me asking?" "Of course not, it’s Richard, why?" Officer Davenport asked, curious. "Do you know if he had any other children?" Fenton asked, eagerness evident in his voice. "How did you know that? We were separated after my Mother died, she was my twin," Officer Davenport replied. "Do you know what her name was?" Fenton asked. "Yes, her name was Alexis, why?" Officer Davenport curiously asked. "I was hired by an Alexis Davenport to find her Father, just before Joe was kidnapped. I was so busy, I didn’t pay attention to your last name, and she came to see me, so I remembered, can you meet me at Benton Trauma Hospital, in about four hours?" Fenton asked. "You mean, Alexis asked you to find Dad, but not me?" Officer Davenport asked, confused. "She may not have realized, that she had a brother," Fenton guessed. "Probably not, well I was just getting off work, I can meet you then," Officer Davenport, "I thought of something, do you want me to bring my Dad?" "Yes, that would be great," Fenton said, "See you then." They both said bye, and hung up the phone. "You mean, you met Alexis’ brother while looking for Joe?" Elizabeth asked, amazed at the startling coincidence. "Amazingly yes, I was so intent on finding clues on looking for Joe, that I missed the name, until Ms. Davenport showed up," Fenton explained to his daughter. "They even resemble each other closely." Fenton got up from his chair, and went to open his door, while Sam got up to gather up the evidence they had on the case, he only took a video camera of the map, he could recreate it later, if he had to. "Ms. Davenport, will you come in here, please?" he asked his guest. Alexis came into Fenton’s office and took a seat next to where Sam sat back down. "What is it Mr. Hardy?" she politely asked. "I think I may have solved your case without even knowing it, at least at the time," Fenton replied. "You did!" Alexis exclaimed. "How?" Fenton ran a hand through his hair. "You have to promise not to tell anyone," Fenton said, and Alexis nodded her head. "Well, the reason I wasn’t working on your case, was that Joe was kidnapped by people that I have been investigating for awhile, and he’s in the hospital," he explained. Alexis gasped. "What has Joe being kidnapped have to do with me case?" she asked, confused. "Well, I went to Southport to follow up on a lead, and I met this Officer Raymond Davenport," Fenton replied. "My Dad would be too old to be a police officer," Alexis stated. "Well, it seems that this officer has a missing twin sister, named Alexis and his Father’s name is Richard," Fenton explained to her. "You mean, I could possible have a brother," Alexis gasped in surprise. "It could be, I told him to meet me at the hospital in four hours, I need you to drive Laura and Elizabeth there, you can come back later to meet them, or wait there until they get there," Fenton explained. "Will his Dad be there?" Alexis asked, anxiously. "Yes, he will," Fenton said, he would have smiled, but with Joe in the hospital, he didn’t feel up to it. "I’m ready to leave, if they are, and I would be more than willing to wait at the hospital, I had some papers to grade anyway, I can do them at the hospital, it usually takes me between 3-4 hours to go through them all," Alexis explained. With that they locked up the house, turned on the alarm and took off for the hospital. Fenton and Sam, with all the evidence gathered took off after Alexis, Laura, and Elizabeth took off for the hospital. He thought about Joe again, lying in the hospital, but a thought came to him. "I’m calling the hospital for an update," Fenton told Sam. Sam nodded as he parked the car in the police parking lot, he waited for Fenton to make the call. The phone rang two times, and was answered by a soft female voice. "Hello. Benton Trauma Hospital, how can I help you?" "This is Fenton Hardy, can you patch me to Joe Hardy’s room, I need to speak to Frank Hardy," Fenton replied. "Okay, I’ll patch you through, will you please hold," the nurse responded. After several seconds he could hear the phone ringing. Frank picked it up after the first ring. "Hello?" he asked. "Frank, how is Joe doing?" Fenton asked. "Still unconscious, Dad, but he did wake up for a few minutes, shortly after you left, but he hasn’t done it since, Dr. Dawson expects him to wake up sometime tomorrow, though," Frank replied. "That’s great," Fenton replied. "I’ll be there as soon as I can," Fenton said, "And your Mom and Elizabeth are on their way to the hospital," Fenton told his son. They said bye to each other and hung up the phone. "How’s Joe?" Sam asked. As he and Fenton took all the evidence into the police station. "He actually woke up," Fenton replied. "But only for a few minutes, the doctor expects him to regain consciousness tomorrow." Just as he said that he walked into the police station, and Con Riley had overheard him speaking, "Does that mean Joe is going to be all right?" Con asked. "Yes, he woke up about an hour ago, here’s some copies of my files on the Draven case, what’s the progress on the hearing?" Fenton asked.
"It should begin in about fifteen minutes, I’ll get this to the DA, she wanted to make sure that the Draven’s didn’t get out, when Ms. Nicholas heard what they did to Joe, and Alex’s confession of what they did to him..." Con was saying when he was interrupted by Fenton. "You mean, he confessed everything that they did to Joe?" Fenton gasped. "I thought he just told you where to find the missing Michaelson boy?" "It surprised us as well," Con replied. "Bit it seems he wasn’t for beating Joe that severely, but he still allowed it to happen, he said he was willing to testify against his brother and sister, he said, he didn’t need a deal, so he’ll serve the same time as them." "I don’t know if that is good or bad," Fenton remarked. "What do you mean?" Sam asked. "When he testifies, it’s going to be hard on all of us, to hear it," Fenton replied. "It’s bad enough to see the end results of it, but to re-hash it, maybe when Joe feels up to it, it won’t be so bad once Frank hears it from Joe’s point-of-view." |
