"You
aren’t going to get away," Joe stated to Pete and Billy.
"I wouldn’t be too sure, I am sure your brother would do anything to keep you safe, or your father," Pete said coolly. "I don’t even know where my father is," Joe calmly replied. "I am sure if he found out, he would immediately head here," Billy said. "You know why I knew about your Dad?" Joe just glared at him. It wasn’t uncommon for anyone who has been in jail to have learned about who is dad was. Billy answered anyway, "He was hired to capture all of us when we escaped, 6 of our compatriots have already been rounded up, we have been fortunate to escape his clutches." "Then kidnapping me, will get you re-captured," Joe stated matter-of-factly. "No, we have the upper hand, we have you plus your new friend here," Pete turned around to indicate Brad, but he was gone. "Where did he go?" Pete asked, a shocked look coming over his features. Billy looked around, also shock written on his face. "I don’t know." Pete turned back to Joe, "Where did he go?!" He grabbed Joe back his shirtfront. "I am just as surprised as you are," Joe replied. Pete threw Joe down on the ground, "Keep an eye on him, make sure he doesn’t disappear out of your sight!" Peter stormed off through the cabin, he checked the kitchen, all the bedrooms, bathrooms and closets and every nook and cranny he could think of. He then went outside, and Brad was nowhere to be seen. Just when Pete was going back into the house, an unseen force grabbed him from behind, and he was secured in a pair of handcuff’s before he knew it. When he got a good look at his assailant, it was Brad, with a menacing look on his face that actually shook him to his core, it was like nothing he had ever seen and shocked him to silence.
After about ten minutes, Billy was getting decidedly nervous, Pete hadn’t returned and Brad was nowhere to be seen. And he always got jittery on Halloween, especially since all the pranks his older brothers played on him when he was growing up. He was also resentful towards Joe in a way, because of the relationship he heard he had with his older brother, he was always envious growing up of the relationships his older brothers had, but they never shared with him. He thought maybe it was that they were so much older than him, or they had to help take care of him when he was younger because his parents were much older when he was born. But he shook those thoughts from his head, now was not the time, to be resentful. Pete was missing and here he was saddled with taking care of someone who could tackle him in a heartbeat. I hate being small! he thought to himself. "You stay here!" he forcefully told Joe, and he quickly made his way out on the porch, when he opened up the door, the sight that greeted him, shocked him beyond belief, there handcuffed to one of the supporting beams to the roof of the porch was Pete with his handkerchief in his mouth. Billy was startled and unsure what to do, thinking that maybe that Joe’s brother had indeed brought in local law enforcement in, he quickly re-entered the house and was chilled to the bone, there was Brad who was coming in from the kitchen, he was certain that that kid would have taken off. "Where did you come from? And where did you go?" Billy sputtered. "I’ve been here all along," Brad replied. Joe just looked on curious, but he could clearly see, especially since Pete left that Billy definitely was nervous, and was just biding his time before help arrived. But what he saw next, made him nervous. Billy raised his gun to fire and fired, but there was a hollow clicking sound, he tried it again. Joe sat flabbergasted, the gun was jammed he thought, what a lucky break, Brad wore a big grin on his face, and Billy definitely knew when he lost, he quickly raised his hands in surrender. Brad warily came over to him, and grabbed the handcuff key and unlocked Joe’s handcuffs, and Joe put them on Billy, and together he and Brad retrieved Pete from the front porch and brought them in the house, settling them down on the couch for the long wait until they knew help would arrive.
By nightfall, Brad noticed some movement outside the house, "Well, I think help has arrived." "I think you’re right," Joe replied, looking carefully out the window, they had the light down to a minimum so anybody coming to the rescue would shoot them instead. "I’ll go out there, Frank and I have a signal worked out for situations like this arise." "Go ahead, they won’t be going anywhere," Brad stated.
Joe carefully walked to the front door, and ever so slightly creaked the door open, so it opened real slowly, outside he heard, "Don’t fire, everything’s fine!" He heard Frank say. "Aren’t you a sight," Joe said, as he saw Frank come running out of the woods. "Dad! You’re remaining two suspects are in the house." He said matter-of-factly. "Did they mistreat you?" Fenton asked. "Not really," Joe said. He looked over at Frank. "Did you activate the switch in the van last night?" "Yeah, but it doesn’t look like they found out about it," Frank said. "Where’s Brad?" As they walked in the house, "Well, he was in the house, where is he?" "There was no one here, except Clancy and Shillings," Trooper Ferguson said. "He did that disappearing act on Clancy and Shillings too," Joe replied. "That is how he caught Shillings. Clancy just gave up, I guess Halloween isn’t his holiday, he’s been nervous all day."
When everyone was back in Harrisburg, Joe was recounting his tale to Sheriff Mills. "You say a tall guy with medium brown hair and pale blue eyes?" the sheriff asked. "Yeah, he said his name was Brad Landers," Joe asked, curious as to the sheriff’s reaction. "Well, it looks like you were saved by the Green Hills Guardian Ghost," Mills told him and his friends. "Ghost?" Frank asked. "He didn’t look like a ghost to me." He found it hard to believe, but seeing what Joe described, even he had to give that story some credibility. "Yeah, he was killed about 10 years ago, and has helped numerous people in the area who are lost, or even hurt, but no one knew his name." Sheriff Mills paused. "They suspected he was a local kid out on a hike, but most of the people he has saved were not local, so we couldn’t know for sure, now we know." "Who was he?" Joe asked. "Exactly who he said he was," Sheriff Mills said. "His father was the local sheriff at the time, so he grew up with his father helping out people." "And I guess, he wanted to do it to," Joe said. "We need living people like that." All anyone could do was nod their heads in agreement.
