CHAPTER 10

Billy Clancy and Pete Shillings made their way along the dirt road, in a old rickety truck they managed to get off of some old farmer in their escape from the state pen in North Carolina, they were making their way to Canada.

"Are you sure your cousin is reliable?" Billy asked, looking at the driver with dull green eyes, and a newly shaven hair-do, that used to be his thick dull black hair.

"All of my family is reliable, he’ll have the appropriate ID’s and jobs waiting for us when we get there," Pete said, glancing over to his partner in crime, through his beady hazel eyes under his newly shaven blond hair.

"Just making sure, I don’t want to go back," Bill said, determinedly.

"Neither do I," Pete replied. "Now stop fretting.

As they continued on back roads and anywhere they could find to drive that would enable them to escape detection from any cops, the truck all of a sudden started sputtering, "Great, now what is the problem now?" Pete asked to himself out loud.

"Is there plenty of gas?" Billy asked.

"Yes, we just filled up 20 miles back, remember?" Pete replied. "Oh, yeah, I forgot you fell asleep."

"No one saw us?" Billy asked worriedly.

"Stop being a worry wort, it was run by some near-sighted older man," Pete told him.

"Then what can be the problem?" Billy asked.

"Well, let’s find out, maybe I can fix it," Pete replied.

"That’s right, you were a mechanic before you turned to a life of crime," Billy commented.

"It’ll come in handy here, if the problem isn’t too complicated," Pete said. He pulled over and immediately popped the hood of the old truck, and looked under, Billy followed him out.

"Well, what is the problem?" Billy asked, he had no experience in cars, he always relied on others for rides.

"It looks like we have to find another ride," Pete said a few moments later. "It seems we took a truck with a bad carburetor."

"Just great, next vehicle you steal, do any inspection before you take it, we won’t get to Canada at the rate we’re going," Billy said, exasperated.

"Remember, we have to escape detection on order to get there," Pete told him. If he didn’t like Billy so much, he would have left him back in the pen.

"Well, we better find some place to stay, it’s getting late," Billy said.

"Where?" Pete asked. "We’re out in the middle of nowhere."

"We’ll find a place, someone is bound to have a cabin here somewhere." Billy replied.

"Hey there, looks you guys are here for a good time!" a voice shouted from somewhere off to the right.

Frank and Joe looked up, they saw a athletic looking young man, a little bit younger than Joe was, at 17 approaching them. Upon closer approach he was as tall as Biff’s 6’3" height with medium brown hair and pale blue eyes.

"Yes, we are?" Joe replied. "What are you doing out here in the woods by yourself?"

"I live not too far away, I like to take hikes in the woods whenever I need to think," replied the kindly teenager.

"What is your name?" Frank asked.

"Pardon my poor manners," the youth replied, holding out his hand to the group. "My name is Brad Landers, may I ask what are your names?"

As everyone shook Brad’s hand, they introduced themselves, "Well, Brad, you can join us, we have plenty to eat, and I am sure you can inform your parents of where you’ll be." Joe invited him. "We could always use someone with us that knows the area, that could point out all the sights and sounds."

"That’s no problem, my parents have gone on a business trip for the weekend, they’ll be back on Monday," Brad said. "I would be happy to join you all. Where are you all from?"

"Bayport, do you know where that is?" Frank asked.

"Yes, sure do, went there when I was little, nice town," Brad commented.

"Too bad we didn’t meet up then," commented Tony. "By the way, do you know a Matt Vickers, he grew up in this area."

"I know of the family, I think Matt is a few years old than me though," Brad replied.

"I guess he is at that," Frank said. "His family owns the cabin we’re staying at."

"I think I know the one you’re talking about, it’s just a little bit more of a hike isn’t it?" Brad commented.

"Yes, we could have drove up, but we all wanted to hike in, I am going to go fetch it after we get it in case we might need it," Joe told Brad.

"I can go with you," Brad volunteered.

"That’s all right, it looks like you have been hiking longer than us," Joe observed.

"No problem, I hike all the time, I have hiked all day in some instances," Brad replied. "Too bad it isn’t an Olympic sport, I would win gold for sure!"

"Well, then as long as you don’t mind, we can go now," Joe suggested. "We have two copies of the directions, right Frank?"

Joe asked his brother.

"Yeah, I left the other copy in the van," Frank said. "I have the other one with me," he said, patting his coat pocket.

"Okay, see you later," Joe said. As he and Brad set out in the direction of the Hardy’s van.
