CHAPTER 10

As Brad and Joe continued their hike back towards the Hardys van, Brad decided to strike up a conversation. "Do you have a girlfriend?" he asked.

"Yeah," Joe replied. "Her name’s Vanessa. Do you have one?"

"I did. Her name was Brenda, she broke up with me last week," Brad replied, sadly. "Well, actually it’s not an actual break-up, she just wanted a break from seeing me."

"That’s too bad," Joe commented. "Do you still love her?" he inquired. "If you don’t mind."

"No, I don’t mind at all, yes, I do love her very much," Brad replied, honestly. "With all my heart, which is why I agreed that she needed some space. We’re both young and have out whole lives to live, there so sense in hurrying to get married. Marriage isn’t something you rush into. My parents got married right out of high school, and they say that was the biggest mistake they had ever made."

"Did they divorce?" Joe asked.

"No, but they have far from a perfect marriage, they stay together because they made a vow, not because they truly love each other. I admire their conviction, but sometimes it makes for high stress levels with so much tension in the house." Brad explained.

"Have they tried to work it out?" Joe asked, thankful that his parents weren’t having the same problems.

"That’s what they’re working on now," Brad replied. "They’re on a marriage retreat in Florida."

"I hope they work everything out," Joe said. "Do you have any siblings?"

"I have 2 younger brother," Brad replied. "Do you have any other siblings, other than Frank?"

"No," Joe replied. "Just me and Frank."

"You guys sound close," Brad observed. "You guys must do a lot together."

"Yes we do," Joe agreed. "Do you do a lot of stuff with your brothers?"

"Usually, but they went to visit family in California, they’re only 4, so they don’t have to go to school yet."

"They’re twins!" Joe exclaimed.

"Yes, identical. Except Mark has a birthmark on his neck," Brad explained. "Hopefully, that would prevent him and Thomas from trying to switch places," he laughed.

Joe laughed back, "Still must be confusing though."

"Yeah," Brad answered. "Especially when they wear turtlenecks."

They walked on for awhile, and Brad broke the silence, "Which one of you resembles your Dad?"

"Frank does," Joe replied. "Sometimes, especially when we meet up with someone Dad hasn’t seen in awhile, they swear Dad cloned himself."

"Really?" Brad exclaimed, "I had heard the children often closely resemble their parents occasionally, but that close?"

"Yeah, I seen the pictures too," Joe replied back.

"You must take after your mother than," Brad observed. Joe nodded. "You don’t mind, do you?"

"No, she’s a wonderful Mom," Joe said. "Not many mothers would tolerate her sons as well her husband being detectives like Mom does!"

"She must be a strong woman," Brad commented, "To let her children do something that could potentially put them at risk."

"Dad has taught us a lot about detective work, and Frank and I try to be careful, but mostly Frank," Joe explained.

"Well lookie here, looks like we have found us a new ride," Pete replied.

As Billy and Pete slowly approached the black van, parked in a parking lot where a lot of hikers park there vehicles, "I don’t know what this, it looks fairly secure," Billy said.

"Well, we could wait until the owners come back," Pete said, "This van looks like it has a security system."

"An advanced one, by the looks of it," Billy replied, getting off the ground after closely examining the vehicle.

"Well, let’s hide out over here, when they come back, we’ll ambush them and find somewhere to hide out for the night," Pete said.

Soon, Pete and Billy found a comfortable spot close enough to the van, yet far enough to escape attention.
