CHAPTER 10

As Joe had guessed Frank had called the local police, and they silently walked back to the parking lot and were driven to the local police station.

Sheriff Thomas Mills lived near the police office and allowed Frank, Chet, Biff, Phil and Tony to crash until dawn, where they would get together with incoming state police to recapture the fugitives.

At dawn, everyone was awakened and they went to the local diner on Main Street near the police station. Everyone ordered their meals and was discussing everything, when Frank got a surprise.

"Dad!" Frank said. "Sam got in contact with you."

"Yes, but he really didn’t need to, I was working with the North Carolina authorities to recapture these guys, they escaped along with 6 other guys, they have been found and returned only Shillings and Clancy have eluded capture," Fenton explained, "until now."

"Well, they can’t go anywhere now, I hope," Frank said.

"How did these two get their hands on Joe," his dad asked.

Frank explained everything he knew, he also explained about the kill switch, he, Joe and Frank installed in the van, and seeing Joe in the bedroom of the cabin, handcuffed to the bed.

Just then, a state policewoman came into the diner and came up to Fenton, she conversed briefly with him and left.

Frank looked at his father questioningly, wondering what that was about. Fenton explained, "The state police found a vehicle they were in about five miles from the cabin, a beat up old truck they stole from the older farmer in West Virginia. Both of their fingerprints were found all over the truck."

"What happened to the farmer?" Frank asked.

"He was put in the hospital for a couple of days, but he’s fine," Fenton replied.

After a briefing filling everyone in what happened, they slowly made their way to the cabin, everyone was to drive to with half a mile of it and hike in to hide their presence from the fugitives as much as possible.

The plan was simple, as soon as Phil Shillings and Billy Clancy were separated from their hostages they would strike, but in no way were they to be harmed.

Everyone got into place, only a few people were allowed the get close to the cabin itself, since the cabin was outside city limits the state police had jurisdiction, so half a dozen state police, Fenton and Frank sneaked up on cabin.

It was a waiting game, they couldn’t move as stealthily as last night, but they could get into spots that would make it easier to move on the van if necessary.

They didn’t hear movement from the house and that surprised them, it took them most of the day to plan the rescue attempt, and now evening had settled, no one seemed to discover the van was going nowhere unless they forced Joe to tell them why.

All of a sudden the door opened slightly, the officer in charge told everyone to prepare.
