He couldn’t move.
That was Frank’s first realization as he awoke. He couldn’t move and his head hurt. Then he remembered what had happened. Leaving Joe and the motel, driving towards town, the crash…. Frazer.
Then he realized that it was dark, and that he was outside. ‘Joe, has he got Joe too?’ Frank thought.
He shifted his head slightly and looked around him. He was tied to the bumper of his station wagon, which was parked sloping towards the Grand Canyon, one of the deepest drops in the world. Only a metal wedge under the back wheels kept the car from going over the edge.
There was no sign of Joe, but Frank could see Arnold Frazer a little distance from him, cooking something on an open fire. Frazer turned to get something from a bag behind him and caught sight of Frank.
"Good evening, Frank, sorry for having to tie you up like that, but it seemed easier that beating you into submission."
Frank’s voice was full of anger as he spoke. "What’s all this about Frazer, huh?" "This isn’t the movies, why didn’t you kill me months ago; you surely had plenty of opportunities. Why drag it out, why nearly get caught all these times?
Suddenly the seemingly calm and composed Frazer stood up and kicked savagely at the fire he had been tending, sending sparks in every direction.
"Why… WHY? Because it’s more FUN that way Frank, because I don’t want you to die that easily. Because you deserve to feel pain. Because my son never got a choice, BECAUSE I WANT TO!"
Frazer’s voice grew as he spoke and to Frank he looked almost mad. He was certainly more unstable that the last time Frank had seen him. This, however could prove a good thing, a sane man looking for revenge would have killed Frank long before this.
He knew he had to keep Frazer talking. Joe would have to realize that something had happened, with any luck he was out there at this moment, searching for him.
"I called your brother" Frazer’s voice was dripping with disdain. "He seemed worried. It was touching. He’s on his way. Should be here at any minute actually. He wants to save you I’d imagine. Well, instead he’s going to look at you die, and then, later on, once he’s finished mourning you, he’s going to die."
"Nice plan, Frazer, but you forgot one thing." Frank looked Frazer in the eye. "You forgot that no matter how much you try to hurt me, you cant take away the memories that I have, of Joe, of Callie, of my life so far."
Frank could see by Frazer’s reaction that he was treading on dangerous territory but he kept talking, anything to distract him.
"What memories have you, and what memories had your son? Joe and I read the police reports. You weren’t much of a father by all accounts."
Frazer rose and walked over to where Frank sat tied to the bumper, pulling a handgun from the pocket of his jacket. Using the butt of the gun Frazer punched him hard in the stomach. Frank cried out involuntarily with pain. Frazer hit him again and again.
Suddenly, a noise from behind made Frazer stop. It was the sound of a safety catch being taken off a gun.
Frank looked up. Joe was standing about thirty feet away, his hands trembling, tears streaming down his face, the gun in his hands.
"Hi Joe, pleased you could make it, you’re just in time" Frazer smiled at Joe, a thin, icy smile.
"You’re not going to hurt anyone else Frazer" Joe’s voice rang through the clearing, cold and emotionless.
"Oh but I am" shot back Frazer, and as he spoke, he pulled the wedge from out under the back wheels. The station wagon moved slowly over the cliff edge.
"Fraaannk!"
Joe started to run, but Frank knew he wouldn’t make it in time. He could only look one last time at his brother’s face as the car tipped over the canyon edge, and he and it hurtled towards oblivion.
