"Stop!" ordered one of the men from the perimeter of the room, racing
over and turning the machine off. It stopped a mere inch above Joe's
chest.
"Why are you investigating the rapes now?" asked a tall good-looking blond man. "It's too late to prosecute." "The man is my father," Joe said. "He raped my mother." "Leaving it a bit late to find him, don't you think?" Bledsoe asked. "I just found out," Joe stated. "He does look like me," said the blond, looking down at Joe. "Who's your mother?" Bledsoe demanded. "Doesn't matter," said the blond. "I didn't know my victims anyway." "You?" Joe asked, gazing at the man wide-eyed. "Jeff Blevins at your service," he replied with a slight bow. "So you're my son," he said with a grin. "Wasn't easy to find me, I know. I even outwitted the New York City Police Department. You must be pretty smart," he added, ruffling Joe's hair. "What do you want to do with him?" Bledsoe asked Blevins. "I think he should become a part of the family," Blevins replied. "He is my son so he must have inherited something from me," he added, causing Joe to wince. "Very well," Bledsoe said. "He must go through the same initiation as you did." "Initiation?" Joe asked fearfully. "Yeah," Blevins said, untying Joe's bonds. "I had to rape every woman they brought me. Of course," he added with a fond smile, "after a bit, I went out and chose my own." "You raped twelve women for an initiation?" Joe demanded in disbelief.
"Initiation into what?" "What if I don't pass?" Joe asked. "Then you die," Bledsoe answered him. "Take him," he ordered Craig and Mike. They each took one of Joe's arms and escorted him out of the room and upstairs. Bledsoe looked at Blevins. Why don't you choose your son's first victim?" he suggested, then turned and left Blevins alone. "Hi Mom," Frank said into the receiver. "No, we haven't found Joe yet. He paused while she spoke. "Dad's gone to headquarters to talk with Chief Peterson about questioning Davis. I'm going over to Whitman's. Maybe Joe went back to see him." "Be careful," Laura said. "And Frank," she added, "bring Joe home." "We will," he promised and hung up. He headed over to Whitman's but found no one home so he went to the police station to see if there had been any luck with Davis. "Davis still denies all the rapes," Fenton told Frank. "I believe him." "What about Bledsoe?" Frank asked, remembering the conversation he and Joe had with the man. "What about him?" Fenton demanded. "He said Sarah had married Jeff Blevins," Frank replied. "He also said Joe looked like Blevins." "Maybe Blevins was the rapist," Chief Peterson remarked. "Do you think Joe figured that out?" "It's a place to start," Fenton said. "There is also another explanation," he added. When Frank and Chief Peterson looked at him, he continued. "If Bledsoe called Blevins after your visit and found out you weren't who you claimed to be..." "He may have kidnapped Joe to find out why we were there," Frank finished for him, looking sick. "Let's get over there now!" "Daddy's here," Mike said to Joe with a laugh as the door opened and Blevins and a young woman with a blindfold on entered the room. She was gagged and her hands had been tied behind her back. Her long black hair was half-hanging from the bun in which it had been placed earlier. Blevins pushed her onto the bed. "Okay Son, here's the deal," Blevins said to Joe quietly so the woman could not hear. "Sarah and I never had any children and I really want a son, but if you don't do some damage to her then not only does she die, so do you. Follow me?" he asked. Joe swallowed and nodded. "Good. You've got one hour in which to play, then we'll be back in here. Be a man," he ordered, then he, Craig and Mike left the room. Joe's eyes roved the room for the millionth time since he had been brought here. No matter how hard he looked, there was only one way out, the door. Joe looked over at the woman cowering on the bed and walked over. When he sat down she tried to scamper away but he grabbed her and pulled close. "Easy," Joe told her, reaching behind her head and untying the blindfold. She stared at him through terrified green eyes. Joe held a finger to his lips but she backed away, whimpering. Sighing in defeat, Joe pulled her back to him. She struggled as much as she could but Joe pushed her back on the bed and covered her body with his.
