CHAPTER 15

Chet gulped and nodded. Biff watched in shock as Joe pulled a chair up and turned it around backwards. He sat down in front of Chet and looked him in the eyes.

"Who are you?" Joe demanded.

"Ch-Chet Morton," Chet answered, stammering in shock as much as in fear.

"How do you know me?" was Joe's next question.

Chet looked at Joe as if he's lost his mind but answered anyway. "We're best friends. We've gone to school together since kindergarten. You date my sister, Iola."

"A slim brunette?" Joe asked thoughtfully.

"With brown eyes," Chet agreed.

"Who am I?" Joe asked, the fight gone out of him. Only confusion and fear showed in his eyes.

"You're Joesph Paul Hardy," Chet told him softly. "Frank's your brother and your parents are Fenton and Laura Hardy," he added. Chet and Biff exchanged a brief, worried glance as Joe crossed his arms and laid his head on them.

"Joe?" Chet asked softly.

Joe looked up slowly. "I don't remember who I am," he said in a strangled voice. "But I do know I can't stomach the things they're trying to make me do," he added as Chet and Biff gasped in surprise.

Joe stood up and came behind Chet and released him. Chet reached out to Joe and laid a hand on his arm. "We'll get your memory back" he promised Joe. "And put those guys out of business in the process," he added, then went to untie Biff.

"We've got to get out of here before Mike gets back," Biff said, taking Joe's arm and pulling him toward the steps.

"Too late," moaned Chet when they heard the door creak open and someone start down the steps. Biff let go of Joe's arm and stood on one side of the steps while Chet took a position on the other side. As soon as they saw the feet, they each grabbed the man and pulled him down the stairs.

Biff was the first to notice their captive was Frank instead of Mike. "How did you get here?" Biff asked.

"I picked the lock on the back door," he told them. Then he looked over to where Joe stood watching them. "Are you going to attack me again?" he asked Joe a little hesitantly.

"He's got amnesia," Chet told Frank.

"That explains a lot," Frank said softly, walking over to Joe. "Don't worry baby brother," he said, placing an arm around Joe's shoulders. "We'll ge you to a doctor as soon as we're out of here."

Joe stood still, not speaking. Frank's gesture and the words, baby brother, brought back a flood of memories. His face was white and he looked like he might pass out. Chet grabbed a chair and brought it over to Joe. Frank gently pushed Joe into it and forced his head between his knees.

Joe took a couple of breaths and slowly sat up. "I'm okay," he assured them as they nervously hovered about. He stood up and was about to say something when Mike came rushing down the stairs followed by Temple and Miller.

"What's going on?" Temple demanded.

"I was watching these two so Mike could take a break when this creep sneaks up behind me," Joe told them, pushing Frank in front of him. Surprise kept Frank, Chet, and Biff still long enough for Temple to pull out a gun and level it at the threesome. "How did you know I was in trouble?" Joe asked.

"Mike noticed the back door had been forced open," Miller replied.

"In the chairs boys," Temple ordered. "Tie them up," he ordered his pals.

Joe grinned and took a length of rope from the floor and pulled Frank's hands behind his back. "Just relax, bro," he whispered.

Frank took a deep breath and flexed his muscles. It was a trick their father had taught them. If you expanded your muscles while you were being tied, then relaxed them, the ropes would be loose. After tying Frank's hands, Joe stepped in front of him and tied each leg to a chair leg. Rising, he gave Frank a wink and followed Temple up the steps as Mike gagged the threesome.

Frank waited about ten minutes after everyone had left before beginning to loosen his binds. A few minutes later and all three boys had been freed.

"Joe's really flipped," Chet said after they had made it safely out of the house and to the van.

"No," Frank denied, grinning. "He's a genius." He laughed at the expressions on his friends' faces. "If they still believe Joe is Jonny then they'll go ahead with their plans," Frank told them. "We may manage to catch everyone involved."

Frank drove Chet and Biff back to the boarding house and picked up Jonny. Arriving home, Frank noticed the light on in his father's study. Jonny went to get ready for bed and Frank went to the study to talk to his dad.

Agent Samuels was there and Frank filled them in on the plan Temple had and on Joe's weird behavior and subsequent charade.

"Are you sure you can trust him?" Samuels asked Frank. He held up a hand when Frank opened his mouth to argue. "Let me finish," he begged. "If he does have amnesia and he was brainwashed into believing he really is Jonny, then who's to say he isn't arranging something to close down the investigation?"

Frank wanted to argue but Samuels made sense. Joe would never do anything to hurt him, but Joe hadn't been Joe lately. The phone rang while Frank was thinking over what Samuels had said.

"Joe," his father said, when he heard the voice on the other end.

"It's me, Dad," Joe told him. "Finally," he added, ruefully. "Is Frank around?"

"He's here and so is Agent Samuels," Mr. Hardy added.

"Great!" Joe replied enthusiastically. "Can you put me on the speakerphone?" Mr. Hardy did as requested.

"Okay, Joe, what's happening?" Mr. Hardy asked. Joe explained about getting attacked on entering Jonny's apartment the night of the switch and his subsequent amnesia. He then told about meeting Timothy Stone.

"He's the one we have to get," Joe said. "I'm sure he's the head man."

Samuels was busy writing notes while Joe talked but at the mention of Stone's name, he stopped. "What did you say his name was?" he asked.

"Timothy Stone," Joe repeated. "Know him?"

"Very well," Samuels replied. "And it looks like you were right," he added to Mr. Hardy. "There is a leak in the DEA."

"What do you mean?" Frank asked.

"Timothy Stone is my superior," Samuels informed the group.

"Then he already knows Joe isn't Jonny," Frank observed.

"No," Samuels denied. "I only check in a couple of times a week and the last time was before Joe and Jonny switched places. I'm supposed to give him an update first thing in the morning."

"That's one way to make sure of where he should or shouldn't be," Joe said. "Tomorrow's the day they're going to give Mr. Harrison a coronary."

"Explain that remark," ordered Samuels.

"I thought Frank had overheard the plan," Joe stated.

"I came in on the part where you would be the new owner but missed how that was to happen," Frank said. "Temple mentioned something about buying in."

"The original plan was to force Mr. Harrison to sell," Joe said. "But after they bought into the story I told them about Mr. Harrison having had a heart attack, they decided to let me inherit the place. They'd buy shares in the business and in return, set Kelly and Jonny up with a new kind of business."

"So they're planning on murdering Mr. Harrison instead of a drug buy now," Frank said.

"Well, yes and no," Joe said. "The idea is to let Mr. Harrison see Jonny overdose. I was supposed to come up with a plan to get Jonny's dad to Daniels World Trade. A shipment of cocaine came in earlier today."

"How much?" Samuels interrupted to ask.

"About one hundred kilos," Joe answered. "Anyway, I was to let Mr. Harrison see me open a crate and sample some. Then I'm supposed to fake dying."

"They figure after having his brother OD, watching Jonny die in the same way would bring on another heart attack," Frank surmised.

"Right," Joe agreed. "Listen, I've got to go before I get caught. Tell Mr. Harrison I'm calling tomorrow and get him to agree to be there and fake an attack. I'll make sure Stone's there to take the blame with his cronies," Joe added. "Just be there."

"We will," Mr. Hardy promised before Joe hung up.

"So you're Joe Hardy after all," said a voice from behind him as he put down the receiver.

Joe spun around to find Stone and Temple, both holding semi-automatics aimed at him.
