CHAPTER 15

Getting in the car, Joe realized the brick wall he had felt must have been a bullet-proof vest since he was now facing Agent Samuels. The agent who had pushed Joe in the car climbed in beside him and they took off.

"Why the abduction scene?" Joe asked, leaning back.

"In case anyone was watching," was Samuels' reply. "I've heard you've been taken to the hospital twice since our last meeting," he continued. Joe nodded. "Fill me in," Samuels ordered.

Joe started to but remembered what Frank had told him about a possible leak in the DEA. Instead, he asked a question of his own. "Why don't you tell me what you know about Sommer Daniels and Jonny?"

"I have a better idea," Samuels replied. He turned around and gave an order to the driver. Twenty minutes later they pulled into the parking lot of a dilapidated house. The front porch had two steps missing and the building looked to Joe as if it should have been condemned years ago.

Joe, Samuels, and the agent in the back with them, Jerry Hillman, and the driver, George Kurtz, another agent, got out of the car and went into the building. Inside, Joe was introduced to yet another agent, Jeff Billingsly.

"Have a seat Joe," Samuels said, smiling in amusement as Joe gazed at a person in the doorway who's expression was a replica of Joe's. "I'd like you to meet Jonny Harrison."

"You really are a dead ringer for me," Jonny said, coming into the room and staring at Joe.

"What's going on?" Joe asked, completely bewildered.

"Jonny's been working for us for the past six months," Samuels informed Joe.

"Is that the reason you started having problems with your dad?" Joe asked, emphasizing the word problems.

"Yeah," Jonny admitted, smiling and sitting down. "How did you guess?"

"If I had been in your shoes I'd have gotten my family out of the line of fire too," Joe answered. "But how did you get involved in this mess to begin with?"

"Dad and Sommer used to be good friends," Jonny told Joe. "Dad thinks they still are," he added with a grimace. "Sommer caught me smoking a joint with some friends and asked to see me when I got a chance."

Joe looked disgusted. "Those things mess your mind," Joe told him. "Why would you do something so stupid?"

"Save the lecture," Jonny ordered. "I've already had it from these guys," he added, jerking his thumb behind him at Agent Samuels and Agent Billingsly. "My dad's really anti-drugs. My uncle died from an over-dose," he explained. "Sommer knows this. When I went to see him I was expecting a lecture, maybe a little hard labor if he wouldn't tell my dad, but instead he's all smiles. He said he realized it had been tough being brought up the way I had. He wanted to help me break away from my dad's control. He offered me a job. Sommer said I could really stick it to my dad by working for him because dad had my life all planned out. Working for Sommer would mess those plans up and I could be my own man. Sommer was going to tell my dad that I was going to work for Tom Martin but he had convinced me to work for him instead."

"I wouldn't do it so I told him I'd think about it."

"Wait a minte," Joe interuppted. "How did Martin get into this?"

"Martin's the one who got my uncle into drugs," Jonny explained.

"So he's a known pusher," Joe guessed.

"No," denied Samuels. "He's a known user. We've had him followed but he never sells, only buys."

"You think Sommer's in charge?" Joe asked.

"No," was the answer. "If Sommer were then he wouldn't have been so quick to get Jonny involved," Samuels explained.

"What about Steve Temple?" Joe asked. He told them about his conversation with Zoe and then brought them up to date on his and Frank's investigation, ending with him accepting the job working for Daniels.

"How could you?" Jonny exploded and leapt at Joe. "My dad will never forgive me."

"Your dad knows I'm not you," Joe told Jonny calmly, prying Jonny's fingers from his shirt. "I think you should tell him."

"I can't," Jonny said, sitting down. "He'll worry."

"What do you think he's doing now?" Joe demanded. "Look," Joe continued, "I'm not going to tell him, but I think if you did, you might be surprised."

"I'll think about it," Jonny compromised.

"For right now," Samuels interrupted the two, "we need to decide what to do about your dinner."

"What do you mean?" Joe and Jonny asked at the same time.

"If Sommer and Temple are both going to be there then you could be in serious danger," he said to Joe. "Sommer will probably say things only Jonny could know and if Temple is our man then he could catch on that you're an imposter."

"But if Jonny goes he could be in trouble too," argued Joe. "Someone has already tried to kill me at least once as Jonny."

"Jonny was supposed to be gone to gather money and return to make a buy," Agent Hillman broke in. "You taking Jonny's place nixed that but you did come in with a usable cover story," he added.

"What are you saying?" Joe asked, wanting to get to the point.

"Let Jonny go in tonight, then go back to the boarding house. Odds are he'll be followed. If you're at the boarding house and make the switch back then no one will suspect there are two of you."

"Why would anyone think that in the first place?" Jonny asked.

"Because Craig Daniels knows I'm impersonating you. If he's mixed up with his dad then they all know I'm not you and the poison was really meant for me all along and not you," Joe said, catching on.

"Then why would Sommer have hired you?" Jonny wondered.

"To keep an eye on me maybe," Joe guessed. "I don't know," he said with a shrug. "But if we can convince them I'm really you then we might find out something."

"Okay," Samuels said. "Jonny, you head back to the boarding house. Don't forget Frank will probably drop in. He's the only person you can let know what's going on." Jonny nodded. "Kurtz, you drop Jonny off where he won't be spotted."

"If anyone saw us grabbing Joe earlier then you can tell them we were kidnappers but you got away," Agent Billingsly told Jonny.

Back at the boarding house, Frank was starting to worry because Joe hadn't returned yet. He had stopped by the lab after work where he had been informed that the popcorn was genetically altered apple seeds which had been popped and flavored. Frank knew apple seeds contained trace amounts of cyanide which when consumed built up in the body and would kill whoever had eaten them.

After that, Frank had driven home to bring his father up to date. Mr. Hardy hadn't been able to get in touch with Agent Samuels but he had talked to the man's superiors and felt he could be trusted.

After a snack, Frank had left home and returned to the boarding house. "Where could he be?" Frank asked himself for the tenth time in as many minutes. Just then he heard something hit his wall. The sound came from Joe's room.

He quickly stepped into the hallway and knocked on Joe's door. Opening the door, Jonny looked into Frank's face. "Can I help you?" Jonny asked.

"Can the jokes," Frank said angrily, as he brushed past Jonny and came inside. "Where have you been?" he demanded. "I've been worried sick."

Jonny couldn't help himself. He broke out laughing. He had thought Joe's brother at least could have told them apart.

"I'm glad you think it's so funny," Frank said dryly. His anger never lasted long. "Where have you been?"

"Why should I tell you?" Jonny demanded in mock belligerence. He decided to have a little fun.

"Don't start this again," Frank said, worry wrinkling his forehead. "Have you had any more popcorn?" he asked.

Noticing Frank was really worried, Jonny decided to come clean. "I'm not Joe," he told Frank. "I'm Jonny."
