Joe saw Wallace return to the room, his face set, and knew Frank was in trouble. The window was too small for him to enter through and the only way in or out of the cabin was by the front door. The element of surprise would help, but he doubted it would be enough. Joe left the window, picking up a fair-sized rock as he made his way to the front door. Taking a deep breath, he kicked the door open and threw the rock straight ahead. It struck Wallace's arm as the gun fired, causing the bullet to miss it's mark and land in the chair near Frank's head. Joe rushed inside and tackled Wallace. Repeating the movement Wallace had used on him only last night, Joe knocked out the thug in seconds. Joe stood up, breathing heavy and looked down at Frank. He shook his head and gave Frank a lop-sided grin. "Are you always so much trouble?" he asked. Frank stared at Joe in disbelief. He had gone to rescue Joe but Joe had ended up saving his life. Joe bent down and started untying Frank. Once his hands where free, Frank yanked the gag from his mouth with one hand and pulled Joe to him with the other. "You're all right!" Frank exclaimed happily, squeezing him. "I'm okay?" Joe demanded, laughing. "You're the one who was hog-tied." "What happened?" Frank demanded, releasing Joe and untying his feet as Joe began tying up Wallace. Joe told Frank about meeting Ike Lowell and finding the medallion and going to see Bill Burton. "I thought there was something going on with Burton today," Frank said, his expression grim. "Remy should have made it into town by now," Joe said, as Frank came over and bound Wallace's feet. Frank paused in his task and looked over into Joe's eyes. "Thanks for coming back for me," he said. "Yeah, well," Joe replied, blushing. "I couldn't go home without you. Your aunt would shred me." "No, she wouldn't," Frank denied, wishing he could tell Joe they were brothers. "She likes you." "I like her too," Joe admitted. "You know my dad is in love with your mom," Frank said, watching to see how Joe would react to the information. "I think she kind of likes him too," Joe responded. "Yeah, I've caught them kissing a few times," Frank said. "You think they had an attraction years ago?" Joe asked, watching Frank closely to see how he would respond. Frank was saved from a response by the sound of a siren approaching. "Remy must have found the sheriff," Frank said, relieved. Sheriff Reiner entered the cabin and immediately hugged Joe. "I'm glad you're all right," he said a bit gruffly. "Me too," Joe told him. "Wallace and Burton are the ones who set Remy up," he said. "Wallace told me they had planned to have Remy cleared and Todd Mavis set-up instead. I was supposed to have found evidence they planted to convict Mr. Mavis with." "Come on, let's get this low-life to the jail and then we can go over everything that happened," Reiner said. Frank revived Wallace and untied him. Reiner brought over a pair of handcuffs and read him his rights before escorting him outside and into the back of a police car...the first one Frank had seen since his arrival. "I was beginning to wonder if he had one," Frank whispered to Joe as Reiner climbed behind the wheel. Joe laughed. "He just likes his truck better," Joe said. "Come on," he said. "I'm driving." When the boys arrived at the station, Remy, Sally, Fenton, Laura and Gertrude were there. They welcomed Joe and Frank back and demanded to know what had happened. After finishing the tale, Fenton reported what he had discovered by looking into Wallace's apartment window. "His window?" Frank asked. Fenton shrugged. "Without a warrant, it was the best I could do," he admitted. "What did you see?" Joe asked impatiently. "He had an open suitcase on his bed, partially filled and another sitting on the floor," Fenton informed the group. "He was definitely planning on leaving town, but I am not sure where he was going." "Well, now that we have cause, we can get a warrant and go over the place," Reiner said. "What about Burton?" Laura asked. "He isn't going to get away with what he did, is he?" "Definitely not," Fenton replied. "I have a plan." |
