Frank arrived at The Excelsior at five
minutes before ten and reported to the front desk. Marilyn took his
application and sent him to the personnel lounge where he could don his
uniform. After changing, he returned to the lobby and was informed of his
duties.
Some time later, Frank looked at his watch and frowned. Joe should have checked in with him by now. Surely he wouldn't leave without doing so. Frank was trying to figure out a way to go look for him when the receptionist rang the bell. Frank hurried over to the desk. "Go to the Royal Suite," he was instructed. "We have guests checking out." Frank took the elevator to the top floor. Why were the guests checking out so late? He wondered. They must have already been charged for another night. His stomach in knots, he exited the elevator. Where these people the men who had tried to kidnap Joe? Or worse, if they were, had they seen through Joe's disguise? Sick with worry, he rapped on the door of the suite. "Come in," came the order. Frank pushed the door open and stepped inside, his eyes searching for any sign of a struggle. "Take those," one of the men ordered. Frank recognized him as one of the men Joe had described. Frank picked up the bags and struggled with them out the door and onto the elevator. The three men who had been in the room accompanied him. "I don't see why we couldn't have waited until morning," Meecham complained. "Because we have a package to deliver," Willis said. "Could have waited," Meecham grumbled. "Can it," ordered Orbison. "It's being delivered now." Meecham shut up. Obviously, Orbison was in charge. Frank wondered if the "package" was Joe. Reaching the lobby, the three men went to the desk and Frank was sent outside to load the car. He opened the trunk and put the bags inside. If they did get Joe then they had him elsewhere, Frank realized, taking a quick peek in the back floorboard. Memorizing the tag number, Frank went back inside and used the courtesy phone to call the police. The officer promised to send help immediately. Frank hung up as the men exited the lobby. He headed outside after them, wondering how he was going to be able to stall them. As he took the first step outside, he froze. The three men were surrounded by men in suits. "Frank," Joe said from Frank's right. Frank turned to see Joe standing there, a big grin on his face. Frank rushed over and gave him a quick hug. "I was worried sick about you," Frank told him, his expression a mixture of relief and concern. "I was checking out the suite when they arrived," Joe informed Frank. "I thought I was a goner when I started to leave and Willis grabbed my wrist, but he just wanted me to hang up the Do Not Disturb sign." Joe laughed before continuing. "I hightailed it out of there and called the FBI." As the feds read the men their rights, two police cruisers arrive at the scene. As Officer Delray stepped out of one of the cars, Frank and Joe walked over to him. "Looks like Joe beat me to the punch," Frank said as they joined the officer. "And you are?" asked Agent Tinesdale, joining the officer and the Hardy brothers. "I am Joe Hardy," Joe introduced himself and brother. "I'm the one who called you guys. And this is my brother, Frank." "Ah yes, Joe," the agent said. "I am Agent Tinesdale." "Would someone care to tell me what's going on?" Delray asked, looking from the Hardys to the agent. He had been forced to pull a double shift due to a virus that had been going around and had infected almost half the force and he wasn't in the mood for surprises. "That's what I would like to know," said a stern feminine voice from behind them. "You are?" Delray inquired. "Marilyn Anderson," she stated. "I run this hotel," she added, eyeing Joe and Frank suspiciously. Joe pulled off the fake cap he was still wearing. Marilyn eyed him warily as Willis broke out cursing from the distance. "Explain," she ordered, her expression thunderous. "Two of those men tried to kidnap me earlier today," Joe informed her. "We suspected they were staying in the Royal Suite so we took these jobs to make sure." "I see," Marilyn said, clearly upset. "Look, don't worry about the jobs," Frank told her, assuming that was why she appeared distraught. "We have some friends who are looking for employment on weekends and after school." "Do you think they would be interested in working here?" she asked, hopefully. "I'm sure of it," Frank replied. Marilyn smiled in relief. "That's wonderful but, uh, would you mind finishing your shift?" "Of course," Frank readily agreed. Marilyn turned to Joe and gave him a bright smile. "I'm glad you were lying to me," she said mysteriously before heading back into the hotel. "What did she mean by that?" Frank asked, looking at Joe inquisitively. Joe shrugged his shoulders, a bit embarrassed. "The only excuse I could think of where I might be allowed to keep the cap on was to tell her it was a cap with fake hair," he confessed. "I told her my real hair fell out during chemotherapy." "What was the package they were talking about?" Frank asked Agent Tinesdale. "I thought they were talking about Joe but since they weren't..." "We don't know," the agent admitted. "We haven't finished searching the car and it's contents yet." He looked at Joe. "You will need to go down to the police station and identify the men who tried to abduct you and press charges." "I'll get Stan and we'll be down by the time you've finished up here," promised Joe. "Stan?" Tinesdale inquired. "He was a witness...and a victim. He got beat up helping me," Joe explained. Tinesdale nodded and returned to the suspects' car. "I'll see you at home," Frank told Joe. "Be careful," Joe told him. "Of what?" Frank asked, surprised. "We nabbed the bad guys." "But did we get them all?" Joe asked, frowning. "See ya at home," he added, taking off. When Joe arrived home he went inside and told his mom, who had decided to wait up for Joe, about the bust. "Stan and I have to go down to headquarters but it shouldn't take too long," he ended, giving her a kiss on the cheek before heading outside. When Stan opened the door, he gave Joe a big smile. "How was your shift?" he asked. Joe raised his eyebrows in question. "Frank told me about your job at The Excelsior," Stan explained. "It was great," Joe told him. "We caught the guys who tried to kidnap me." "That's wonderful!" Stan enthused, his smile taking up half of his face. "We need to go down to headquarters tonight, though," Joe added apologetically. "No problem," Stan assured him. "Just give me a minute and I'll be right out." Joe went to the van. He opened the door and climbed in but realized he had left his keys inside the house. He got back out and was about to go in the house when a bullet whizzed so close he felt the air move as it slid past him.
