CHAPTER 10

It sort of started on 13th October in the year 2000. In a little ice-cream parlor in a little town nestled in a quiet corner of Barmet Bay, a group of teenage boys sat chatting about the strange happenings in town.

“The cows have been moo-ing all night. Drove us all crazy!” said Chet Morton, whose family owned a dairy farm on the outskirts of Bayport. He did look bleary eyed from lack of sleep. “And the Bennetts said their horses were acting crazy too! Talk about it being Friday 13th.”

“And the series of earthquakes last week was strange too. Bayport never had earthquakes!” Blond headed Joe Hardy said.

“Not to mention the last two hurricanes so close together,” his elder dark haired brother Frank added. “It could just be the consequence of global warming.”

Tony Prito, the more superstitious of the group, asked, “What about the news that both Walmart and Carrefour had to dump their entire stock of milk because it went bad without reason yesterday? And this morning, the baker who supplied bread for our restaurant was late because had to re-bake an entire set of bread. The first batch refused to rise.”

“Now Tony, that’s sounding like a witch hunt.” Phil Cohen, the resident walking encyclopedia, quipped.

Biff Hooper, the natural sportsman of the group, remained unconvinced. “Then how do you explain how that two sixteen wheelers full of cargo ended up on top of our six storey school building this morning. That’s why we had no classes today. And they had to call in special heavy duty military helicopters to remove them!”

No one had an answer to that.

But the two brothers within the group itched to find out the answers. They were sons of a well-known private investigator, Fenton Hardy, and were aspiring to follow in their father’s footsteps. Their curiosity had landed them in their fair share of mysteries and adventures, and they had built a reputation for themselves as amateur detectives over the last year. Even so, they drew a blank at how anyone could land two full sixteen wheelers on their school roof. Much less why anyone would do that.

After an uneasy silence, the topic of conversation shifted to other more mundane matters. Joe and Chet as usual, had everyone laughing their hearts out with their observations and interpretations of last night’s news broadcast. All too soon, the clock chimed two, and it was time to go home.

Bidding everyone else goodbye, the brothers headed back to their van. They were still discussing the sixteen wheeler incident, throwing out theories, each more outlandish than the last, as Frank drove home.

“Well Frank. Until someone comes up with a definite answer, I am sticking to my theory that Superman got bored with saving lives and wanted to have some fun and give us poor students a break,” Joe concluded with his usual dramatic flair. “God knows we need superpowers to finish all those piles of homework that our villainous teachers seen fit to bestow on us poor creatures.”

“All you need is a few less hours in front of that arcade game and a couple more hours at your books!” Frank shot back.

“All work and no play makes Joe one dull boy, bro,” Joe retorted. Then after a pause, he continued, “And I still think it’s cool to have super-powers. Ah, to have super-abilities and to save the world! I wished!”

“Oops!” Frank said as he suddenly stopped the van and did a U-turn. “I forgot. Mom decided you are getting too shaggy and booked an appointment at the barber for you. I’m supposed to escort you there and make sure you get a decent cut. She still remembered the last time you came home with your hair barely a millimeter shorter.”

“Shaggy! Come on Frank. These golden locks that accentuate my good looks are my key assets to attracting girls.” Joe replied in mocked affront.

“I thought it was your body that attracts the girls?” Frank retorted. “Wasn’t that why you persuaded mom and dad to get you a bow flex for your birthday last month?”

Joe mumbled something intelligible to himself as Frank chuckled and stopped the car in front of the barber’s, “Don’t worry, they’ll grow back soon enough. And I believe mom already told the barber how she expected your hair cut, so don’t try anything.”

Joe moaned melodramatically. Then he sighed and told Frank, “Don’t bother waiting. I know you want to finish your essay so you can enjoy your date with Callie tomorrow. I’ll walk back.”

“You sure?” Frank asked.

“Yeah!” Joe responded with a laugh as he got out of the van and headed into the Barber’s.
