CHAPTER 10

Later that night in Frank’s room, the two brothers lay on their respective beds, an awkward silence between them. It had been a long time since they both shared a room in this house, though that was not the reason for the awkwardness, both brothers acknowledged.

“Frank?” Joe finally broke the silence.

“Yes?” Frank responded.

“Do you think it will change me?” Joe asked.

Frank turned and looked down at his little brother lying on the makeshift bed. “I suppose it will,” he said thoughtfully.

“You know, Frank. I’ve always thought it cool to be a super-hero. Now that I have the opportunity, I don’t really want it anymore…” Joe said.

Frank arched an eyebrow at Joe and commented, “You can’t have read all those comics and not realize that ‘with great powers come great responsibility’, did you? I believe that line was from Spiderman, one of your faves.”

“Ha-ha. Very funny, Frank!” Joe retorted. “Anyway, you feeling okay? I mean, I noticed you were a little quiet this evening.”

“I have been wondering about the prophecy. What is my role in all this? I mean, I don’t have any powers, unlike you three. What can I do against all those creatures you mentioned?” Frank turned a little red when he realized what he just implied to Joe.

Joe looked at his brother a long time before responding. “Frank, you know I have always looked up to you. You taught me what it means and what it takes to be a good person. I now know that these are far more valuable than the brute force of super-powers. Super-powers can cause much misery. I saw it while in the other world. And Frank, I know now more than before, that I will always look up to you.”  Then he added cheekily, “Like I am looking up to you now.”

“You joker!” Frank could not help but feel a little touched by his brother’s thoughtful speech. “Anyway, I have been thinking, I shall look forward to having you play the protector for a bit. After seventeen years of hard work, I deserve a holiday!”

Joe laughed as he reached into his pack and then handed a cylindrical-shaped item to Frank. “Here, I want you to have this.” Joe flipped a switch and Frank saw a blade of sizzling lightning. “You’re the swordsman in the family anyway.”

“Wow, this is cool.” Frank took the saber and tested it with a few strokes then gulped when he accidentally sliced his study chair in half.  “Oops!”

Joe watched his brother’s swordplay with a serious expression on his face. “I know the prophecy didn’t mention it directly, but I believe you do have some powers too. In fact, I believe we always had something. Like the way we always know when the other is in trouble and where to find each other? Maybe all we had to do is to practise at that. Maybe you will find out about your powers when you really need it. Like me. Maybe in New York, or maybe you will discover it when we get to the other world.” Joe stopped, feeling a little embarrassed when he realized he had been babbling.

Frank stared at his brother a long while before finally breaking into a smile. “You know, I think you are right.”

“About the super-powers?” Joe asked.

“No. About the fact that there are much more important things in life than having super-powers. And that maybe you are right about us already having some possibly telepathic abilities. Not that it really matters, but it could turn out to be very useful given what might be happening next” Frank shrugged nonchalantly before continuing, “And we better call this a night. Still have to convince mom and dad to let us take our new friends on a tour of the Big Apple tomorrow.”

“Okay. New York City, here we come!” Joe exclaimed happily as both he and Frank settled down to sleep.
