Frank recalled Friday 13th with clarity ten days later. That was the last day he saw the ‘old Joe’. Or the Joe he knew. However one wanted to describe the situation. At the moment, Frank was glowering at the blond headed boy sitting next to him at the dining table placidly eating his dinner. That person could not his brother! Frank thought. The problem was that no one believed him. Not his friends. Not even his parents. And he could not blame them. Even he had a difficult time convincing himself. That boy looked like Joe in all respects. Same height, same built and same wavy blond hair. Right down to Joe’s sparkling blue eyes that darkened when he was angry. He had Joe’s voracious appetite. He made sharp observations, cracked jokes, and even played football as well as Joe. But to Frank’s eyes, there were very subtle differences. This Joe ate more salads and fruits than meat. The observations and jokes though sharp were more cynical. His behavior in general was more restrained and careful, though calculated to appear spontaneous. He seemed to be on extra good terms with Biff. He had also walked into Joe’s room numerous times. Searching, nosing around, and hoping to find some evidence or clue that could give any indication of what had happened. But there was nothing. Joe’s room was still messy, with the usual piles of comics, textbooks and clothes in their respective positions. Was it his hopeful imagination that his brother’s room seems neater? But it would not be enough to convince his parents. Frank growled in frustration. His parents had been happy with Joe’s academic performance in the last week. He had been bringing home straight-As for all his class tests and quizzes. Not impossible, since Joe had always been a solid B student. And Frank knew Joe was more than capable of achieving straight-As if he wanted. It was just that Joe had always preferred to be out there having fun and socializing than stay at home and study. Then, to his mortification, Joe actually had to go to his rescue twice in the same week. And that was because he was careless. His friends and parents were both surprised. His father was praising Joe for finally mastering his impulsiveness and for his quick thinking that saved Frank’s life. His recent coldness towards Joe did not go unnoticed by his friends or parents. They had attributed it to him missing his ‘baby brother’ and having trouble adjusting to the more matured Joe. Frank had asked himself that question many times, forcing himself to confront his own feelings with brutal honesty. Especially after he tried comparing both Joe’s fingerprints and voice prints, and found them a perfect match for his brother. “How could this be?” Frank wondered. Despite the material evidence, Frank now knew that the boy next to him was not his Joe. It was a secret the brothers kept to themselves. They shared a very special bond with each other, almost like those shared by identical twins. Frank and Joe could always sense when the other was in trouble, and within a limited distance, they could also sense the general direction of the other’s location. When Joe broke his right arm, Frank had to endure a dull throbbing ache for days. Now, he could sense the tension radiating off his brother that was a stark contrast to the placid boy eating dinner beside him. Worse, he had a feeling that wherever his brother was, Joe was in great danger. And he had never felt more helpless where his brother was concerned. Frank watched that boy happily chatting with his parents and eating his mom’s cooking, taking Joe’s place. Suddenly, he could not take it anymore. Excusing himself, he left the dining table and went back to his room. “There must be some way I can prove that he is an imposter.” Frank muttered angrily to himself. But at this moment, his mind drew a blank. “Come on Joe; tell me where you are…” Frank cried out miserably to himself, as he sat alone on his bed, in his home. Outside, an unexplainable electric storm raged on.
