THE CHAPTERS |
The journey to the Twin Towers was uneventful, to say the least. They had managed to walk away from a number of monsters without a fight, even though some of those monsters had looked downright huge and threatening. Joe found out why on the 13th encounter, when a bunch of mutant hooligans dared to attack with guns. Nothing happened when they pulled the triggers, however. Then John held up his hands and let a stream of bullets drop onto the ground. “I think you should leave,” John said. “Before I decide to do something similar with your internal organs.” And they all scrambled off in sheer terror. Joe looked at John in awe. “I thought you said you find things?”“I find them…in many ways.” John said carelessly. “I find them by having them end up with me, or me ending up near them, or me finding the necessary clues to lead to them. I can find ANYTHING I want to find. Sometimes, it’s also HOW I want to find them.” Joe gulped. This guy was more than what he seemed. Heck! Everything here was not what it seemed to be. Instinctively, Joe knew he could not afford to appear terrified in this place. He rubbed his sweaty, clammy hands on his jeans. “Ouch!” Joe exclaimed. “Stupid static electricity!”Apparently, according to John, the world was made up of pockets of alternate realities. Where Joe came from was called the REAL World, According to John, some called it the REAL World, because almost all of the only intelligent beings there believed that they were the only ‘REAL-ity,’ and in the boring laws of physics. Where Joe was now, was officially known as the TRUE World. It was called the TRUE World, because almost all the sentient beings here were TRUE to their true nature and knew the truth: that nothing was what it seemed to be. The TRUE World consisted of many sides, most which did not always obey the law of physics. Some of the better known sides were: the Sunside, Nightside, Darkside, Moonside, Rightside, Starside, and Wrongside, to name a few. Then, there was AUTHENTIC World, where no one had ever gone. Or rather, no one had ever gone and returned to tell the tale. And some people, like John and himself (obviously), could transmute from World to World, and side to side, through the Hopping Gates. The Hopping Gates were called the hopping gates precisely because 1) One ‘hopped’ through the gate to transmute from World to World or side to side, and 2) The gates hopped around as they pleased. Literally. That meant, for instance, that one had to literally ‘catch’ the gates before they could ‘hop’ from Sunside to Nightside for their vacation in the True World. Just like one could figuratively ‘catch’ a flight from New York to London in the Real World. John normally hung around the Nightside of the True World, which had a Hopping Gate linking it, apparently, to London of the Real World. But he had come to the Sunside to take up this very lucrative contract to find Joe (He was given a picture of a golden headed youth that looked exactly like him). Obviously, the Sunside Hopping Gate linked to New York of the Real World. So how did Joe end up in Sunside of the True World? According to John, the way into the True World from the Real World was to be the wrong man at the wrong place at the wrong time. “Yeah, that sounds like me all right,” Joe muttered miserably under his breath. So to get back, he had to be the right man at the right place at the right time, John said. All Joe had to do was to figure out what that meant, AND find that darn Hopping Gate. Now Joe was starting to feel really desperate. “Oh Frank, I really NEED you here now!” When was he ever at the right place at the right time? Then, there they were, standing at the base of their destination, looking upwards. No one knew who built it. The Twin Towers towered ominously above them, most of the upper levels hidden from view behind thick, dark roiling clouds. No one knew what lay in the upper levels. Joe thought they looked like the World Trade Center twin towers of New York. Except, these towers seemed to be alive, breathing dark ominous clouds into the perpetual night sky. They walked in.
