CHAPTER 10

A small crowd of people were waiting for him. They looked happy to see him. Joe was not sure he liked the hopeful expressions on their faces.

They had called him Amano.

“My name is Joe. Who are you guys? Why are you looking for me?” Joe had asked.

A number of them were surprised that he did not recognize them, but insisted he was Amano. That boy in the picture John had shown him. It took a long while to convince them to call him Joe. It took even longer for him to piece together the story they were trying to tell him. Everyone had something to say, and they all talked at the same time.

Joe felt the beginnings of a migraine. The story was cliché. Young kids came out of nowhere to save the world. Well, not exactly the world, just a small corner of it. But these people here had stars in their eyes for those kids.

The story was still stuff from comic books and B-grade movies.

Joe had learned much about the world he was currently in from John and from what he had seen, but had yet to really understand it. This was a topsy-turvy place, right out of comic books and Japanese anime. Strange creatures and beings roamed side by side with human beings. There were weird impossible landscapes that defied the laws of gravity and physics. And some creatures had capabilities that defied logic. Moreover, this entire place was at war with whatever and whoever, and every day was a battle to live to the next.

Apparently, in a nutshell, there used to be some semblance of order in this section of the Sunside. Here, at the base of the Twin Towers, five youths had banded together to create and secure a safe enclave where ordinary beings could go to for refuge. They had called their enclave the Sanctuary. Amano was the leader of the five. The others were Jarrett, Abelon, Flint and Yan. Each had his own gifts and powers. Those under their protection had called them the Lightning Emperor and the Four Kings. Then one day, Amano just disappeared. The Four Kings had searched for him to no avail. They also struggled to maintain the Sanctuary, to no avail. Then they disappeared too.

Things went from bad to worse. More blood. More hurts. More deaths. Then, the really inexplicable started to happen. Reality started getting unreal. Truths became untruths. Then the Oracle came to them and gave them The Prophecy. They were directed to hire John Taylor from the Nightside. And John found him.

“Amano…” came a soft voice filled with disbelief.

Joe turned around and saw a tall slender youth with curly, flaming red hair and bright green eyes staring back at him. There was such joy and longing in those eyes, Joe could feel the closeness and camaraderie he must have shared with Amano. He could hear voices behind him whispering in awe and excitement: “Abelon…one of the Four Kings….They’re coming back...”

“I am sorry, but I am not Amano. My name is Joe,” Joe replied. He hated to disappoint that young man. Somehow, he had to convince him, and everyone else, that he was not who they were looking for. Then he probably needed their help to get back home.

Abelon, like the others, had been very skeptical of his denials. He said to Joe in a voice full of concern, “You must have hurt your head and lost your memories.”

Before Joe could launch into another attempted to convince them of their error, they were under attack from a mass of winged creatures Joe could best describe as gargoyles.

A number had instantly swung into action, giving Joe a quick overview of the different powers each of them had. A bigger number of them screamed and ran desperately for cover.

Then Joe discovered that he had powers after all.

He had thought he was dead meat when he saw a gargoyle flying straight for him. He had screamed in anger and terror and utter desperation, and had raised his arms in a useless gesture to protect his throat. His hands sparkled with electricity for an instant, then sparks radiated quickly outwards until the entire room was filled with dancing, crackling electrical energy. When the storm was over, all the gargoyles had disappeared, leaving a group of people staring at him in awe.

“You ARE Amano!” Abelon had said happily, grabbing him and holding him in a tight bear hug.

Joe simply stood and stared at his hands in absolute shock.

<O>

After zapping a small army of gargoyles to kingdom come, Joe gave up trying to convince everyone he was not Amano. Who would believe him, given that he had exhibited the same powers that Amano had?

And John Taylor had insisted he had made no mistake. But that man had a reputation to protect, so no help there either. Moreover, after Joe’s uncontrolled burst of electrical prowess, John had stood silently in his corner, eyeing him thoughtfully.

Everyone else had looked at him hopefully and expectantly.

Joe was starting to feel freaked out, when John suddenly suggested they take a look at The Prophecy to see what the next step might be. Joe shot John a grateful look, which was quietly acknowledged.

So the Oracle brought out The Prophecy, which was etched onto a strange rubbery piece of fabric in metallic colors and rolled into a scroll held in place by a latch. It was incomplete, however. But the Oracle said that The Prophecy would only reveal what needed to be known so that what needed to be done would be done. With that last comment, the Oracle passed The Prophecy to Joe – for the Lightning Emperor would need guidance to do what must be done to save the worlds.

Worlds. Plural. He had super-powers. Electrical super-powers! Wow! And he was going to save not ‘the world’, but ‘WORLDS’! Joe thought excitedly. Man, talk about wishes coming true.

But as he looked into the grim but hopeful faces of the people around him, his excitement quickly deflated. For the first time, Joe felt the burden of playing savior of the world, and the burden was heavy indeed.

“This is far more stressful than homework!” Joe cried out in frustration. He would never ever complain about homework again! Joe swore silently.

Not knowing what to do next, Joe studied The Prophecy. Wait a minute. It could not be that straightforward, could it? Why not? After all, much of this world was literally true anyway.

Finally, he looked up and said, “I need to go back to my world. I think we need my brother.”
