Frank had awakened this morning filled with the determination that he WOULD find out what happened, today. How he was going to do it, he had no idea. But retracing the events of that day had seemed a good place to start. Somehow, he had managed to make it through the school hours. He only got told off twice for daydreaming. His grades had slipped over the last week, due to a series of C-grade results for the weekly quizzes and class tests. His teachers were disappointed in him. His parents were unhappy with him. His friends were worried about him. Frank paid them no heed. They did not know Joe the way he did. Otherwise they would be helping him too, instead of sitting around and joking with that imposter. “Monday, October 24th. Eleven days,” Frank mumbled to himself as he made his tenth journey from his home to the barber’s, and then back. He had hoped to find some clue that would lead him to his brother. So far, there had been no leads. “Are you all right, Frank?” Joe’s voice called out to him. Frank knew that was the imposter so he ignored him. He continued walking, his eyes continuously scanning the sidewalk. The imposter followed. After a while, Frank turned and confronted him. “What do you want?!” he snarled. “I know you are not Joe. So quit pretending. Who are you and what do you want?!” The fake Joe simply looked at him and asked again, “Are you sure you are all right?” Frank saw the concern on his face. So much like Joe, he thought. For a moment, he wanted to forget everything and just hug Joe, and to believe that everything was normal. But he held back. His brother needed him. Then his eyes hardened. He ignored that boy and made his way to the playground where he and Joe spent many happy childhood hours. The imposter followed not far behind. The playground was totally deserted. Frank was not surprised, given the wild weather of the last few days. They had hail and it was only October. Then there was a sand storm just two days back. Where did all that sand come from anyway? The world was going crazy. He was not even sure he could use the global warming, El Nino or El Nina line of reasoning anymore. Frank walked despondently over to the edge of the sand pit and sat down. He reached down and drew random patterns on the sand, recalling the times when he and Joe had competed building the grandest sand castles. His sand castles were usually grander, with the requisite towers and walls and courtyards and drawbridges, Frank recalled with a smile. Joe’s castles were mostly just unbelievable. Finally, as the pressure of the memories and his loneliness became too much for him, he raised his face to the heavens, and made a wish for his brother to come home. He was totally unprepared for a strong gust of wind to suddenly push him backwards and out of the sand pit. Above him, the crisp late afternoon air shimmered with the colors of the rainbow. Then two bodies fell out of the sky and landed unceremoniously on their backsides at his feet.
