CHAPTER 10

Frank stared at the sight before him in disbelief. For a tiniest moment he hesitated. Then he felt his rear aching – and then he flew towards his brother and held him in a tight embrace. He was gratified to feel Joe returning his hug.

“Joe!” he cried happily, “Where have you been? Are you all right? What happened?” A barrage of questions followed.

“Ouch! Frank! Don’t break my bones!” Joe said laughingly as he tried to extricate himself from Frank’s strong grip. That was when he saw HIM wearing his favorite NBA shirt.

“Who the heck are YOU?!” Joe demanded as Frank finally let him go and he stormed towards the imposter, who turned and ran, only to be taken down by Abelon.

“Shape shifter.” Abelon said in disgust. “Do change back into your base form, please,” he requested in a deceptively polite tone, making sure that the shape shifter could see the flames dancing on his fingertips.

Frank rubbed his eyes and then took another good look at the red-haired youth’s hand. Was he seeing what he thought he saw?

“Please, please don’t hurt me!” the imposter whimpered in a feminine voice, and then burst into tears. The form shimmered, and soon, all three boys were staring down at a very pale young girl with albino white hair and bright pink eyes.

It turned out the girl’s name was Kaydee. As far as she knew, she was the last surviving shape shifter of the Krondriac Clan. She was captured by a gang of pet-hunters while hiding out in a Wobbit form, which was what Joe had seen. She had bitten Joe in her haste to escape, only to find out later he was not her abductor. Then she saw him disappearing through a Hopping Gate.

Not knowing what to do nor how to survive in this world, she had used the information and memories contained in Joe’s blood to morph herself into Joe, and took over his life. She had not expected Frank to be able to tell the difference.

Joe had given Frank a grateful look when he learned that Frank had never given up searching for him. Frank blushed, then leaned over Joe’s shoulder to whisper in a serious tone, “I’ll always know you. And I’ll never give up on you, little brother.”

“I know. Nor will I ever give up on you,” came Joe’s equally solemn response.

“Now, let’s hear what you have been up to during the last ten days,” Frank said.

“Ten days?! I haven’t been gone for more than three days, Frank!” Joe exclaimed.

“Eleven, actually. You disappeared on the 13th, and today is the 24th,” Frank responded in a reasonable tone which he did not feel.

“Time must have moved differently then….You’re not going to believe this, Frank, but here goes…” And Joe launched into his narrative of everything that had happened to him since he rescued Kaydee up till now, and introduced his new friend to Frank.

Joe with super-powers? Alternate realities? Frank sat slack-jawed and listened to Joe in total disbelief. Nothing he had seen or heard from the moment Joe fell out of the sky made any logical sense.

Actually, he was already having a hard time trying to rationalize the strange happenings around Bayport, Frank admitted honestly to himself.

Returning his thoughts to his brother and his bizarre tale, Frank groaned. Joe with super-powers? What a nightmare! He got himself into enough trouble as an ordinary human being. It certainly followed that Joe should now attract trouble of super-magnitude. Didn’t Joe just say that some prophecy stated that he was supposed to save the world? No, not world, but worlds. Plural. At the moment, Frank was not sure if he was going to survive with his own sanity intact, much less entertain the prospects of having to save Joe from super-powered villains.

In a last desperate but hopeful attempt to regain his known and safe and logical world, Frank suddenly asked Joe cautiously: “Your friends don’t happen to be working for FX special effects for Hollywood, do they?” After all, this was his brother, who had a history of planning and executing remarkably realistic pranks and hoaxes.

Frank saw his last bit of hope for a safe and reasonable future go up in smoke after a bolt of lightning hit the ground to his right, followed by a small fireball to his left, and looked up into three pairs of very threatening, irate eyes.

Frank gulped.

“Hey. We have been out here a while now. Those gates are gone and nowhere to be found around here. You guys (referring to Abelon and Kaydee) obviously can’t go home. Why don’t we go and think about what to do next over ice-cream?”  he offered entreatingly.
