CHAPTER 10

“Mom, Dad, we’re just heading up to discuss our European Studies project!” said Frank, as he hustled Abelon and Kaydee upstairs into his bedroom. “And thanks for letting them stay over for the night.”

”Hey, I haven’t finished my dessert yet!” said Kaydee, as Joe discreetly reached out and forcefully dragged her along after the others up the stairs.

Fenton, who had just returned from a case in New York, turned to his wife saying, “I didn’t know they had European friends coming over to stay. Did you?”

”No, but those friends sure have huge appetites!” Laura responded. “They even finished up yesterday’s leftovers after eating their dessert!” Laura added appreciatively, as she loaded the dirty plates into the dishwasher.

Fenton walked over to his wife and embraced her. “I say, while the boys are busy with their friends, why don’t we leave the plates for tomorrow and retreat to our room for our own special project, hmmm?”

A soft giggle floated back down the hallway as Laura followed her husband out of the kitchen.

Upstairs in Joe’s bedroom, the four youths gathered to discuss their next move.

“So, what do we do next?” Kaydee asked, as she bounced up and down on Joe’s bed and helped herself to his Batman comics.

“Hey. Don’t do that! And hands off my limited edition Batman! Did you know how long I had to save for that?!” Joe growled, snatching the comic away from her and gently placing it back into its coverings.

Frank quickly interceded. “What if we start by consulting the Oracle? Now that you are here, the prophecy should have new instructions for us, right?”

Joe quickly reached for the scroll and tried to unroll it. Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tried, the latch refused to budge.

Finally, feeling a little impatient, Kaydee ripped it from his hands and tried. She could not open it either.

“Here, let me try,” said Frank and he reached out and plucked the scroll from Kaydee’s fumbling fingers.

Joe watched Frank caress the scroll as if mesmerized, “Frank?” he called out tentatively, a little concerned over his brother’s unusual behavior.

For a long moment, Frank simply let his fingers roam gently up and down the length of the scroll, a dreamy expression in his eyes. He thought he heard someone calling him. It took him some effort to shake himself out of his dazed state.

“Sorry,” Frank mumbled. “Don’t know what came over me.”

Giving his head another hard shake, Frank focused on the strange patterns etched onto the latch. He carefully traced the etchings before finally pressing the latch. And the scroll unrolled itself onto the carpet.

Joe noted that the prophecy was now longer than when he last read it.

The Program ran on and on

Right from the moment time begun

Then things started going wrong

Since no maintenance was done

The many sub-programs and routines will crashed

The worlds and heavens into each other clashed

In the midst of Chaos and Destruction

Rises the Emperor and Four Kings

They fought against devils and demons

Created a Sanctuary of their own making

All too soon the Emperor disappears

And the Four Kings soon follow

And soon inexplicable events appear

Then be it known the end of time is near

Then the Finder will search and find

A Golden Warrior like the Emperor

Both in looks and powers

The Golden Warrior will battle fine

With a dark knight by his side

Best of friends and brothers

Then off they go to New York City

To find a gate and solve a mystery

The rest of the prophecy was still unintelligible.
