EPILOGUE

“Joe!” Vanessa’s voice held a tinge of panic as she knelt next to her unconscious boyfriend and looked at Callie with wide eyes.

Shining the light over Joe, Callie carefully laid two fingers next to his neck and smiled reassuringly at the younger girl, “His pulse is strong and steady. I’m sure he’ll be f-“ The words were taken from her mouth when she saw the blood, “Uh oh.”

“Callie?” Vanessa gazed fearfully at her friend and then let out a small cry as she saw what had alarmed the other girl! Joe had a gash on his forehead from where he hit the corner of the hard wooden game and it was bleeding onto the game and the floor!

“It- it’s okay, Van,” the eighteen-year-old said, although the slight waver in her voice took away some of the confidence from the words. Turning quickly, Callie laid the flashlight on the ground and then opened her bag and rooted around for a few seconds before pulling out a small hand towel and passing it to Vanessa to press against the cut. “I had the candles wrapped in this so they couldn’t get cracked,” she explained as she turned back to the unconscious boy and then gave his shoulder a gentle shake. She’d seen Frank do this on occasion before, unfortunately. “Joe? Can you hear me? Come on, open your eyes!” She spoke softly but firmly.

There was no response from the boy.

“What’ll we do?” Vanessa asked; her gray eyes darting worriedly from Joe to Callie. Normally she was rather level-headed and unflappable – a calming influence on her more temperamental excitable boyfriend – but seeing Joe like this had totally thrown her normal out the window!

“How’s the bleeding?” Callie asked biting her lip as she fingered her cell phone, hesitant to call Frank if she didn’t have to. She knew her boyfriend would be livid that they’d insisted on coming out here – but there was no other place more ‘perfectly’ suited for summoning the spirits of the Ouija board than here!! But like Joe, Frank made no bones about the fact that he hated Deathe House…. That might even have been part of the attraction tonight… what could possibly be so bad that a staunch non-believer in the paranormal - like Frank Hardy - would be so hateful towards a house?

Vanessa lifted the towel and then leaned in close to take a look as Callie shone the flashlight on the boy’s head. “I think its stopping… but why hasn’t he woken up yet?” The tall blond tried rousing her boyfriend again but still no response. “We need to get help Cal – I think he’s seriously hurt. Oh god-“her hands flew over her mouth as she tried to keep from crying. “He never even wanted to come! We made him!”

“It’s okay Van,” Callie said starting to dial the Hardy residence hoping that Frank might know what else to do. She had just pressed SEND when a low moan from the floor had her quickly canceling the call. Relieved she leaned over Joe and shook his shoulder again, “Come on Joe! Wake up!”

* * *

Joe really hated waking up face down on a cold floor. He could hear the girls’ voices and wanted to ask them to turn down the volume as his head ached something fierce; but that would have required he actually say something, and right now, a low moan was about all he could manage!

Come on Joe! Wake up! Callie’s voice.

Please baby! Open your eyes! Vanessa’s voice and she sounded- scared, maybe? No. Worried.

Where the heck was he and what had happened? This was not his room… well not unless his new mattress was made of rock!

Slowly he opened his eyes and let out a careful sigh – ‘Oh yeah. Most definitely not my room!’ “Wha’ happened?” he managed in a low whisper, swallowing painfully as all movement seemed to hurt his head- and his abdomen. He would have rubbed his stomach, but right now he wasn’t so sure he wanted to ever move again.

“You fell,” Vanessa said, lowering her voice as she saw her boyfriend squint his eyes and wince.

Joe remembered and slowly started to hoist himself up to his hands and knees. “Didn’t fall,” he rasped as he stopped moving, closed his eyes and gave the world a chance to slow down- the room was spinning brutally and he felt a bit nauseous, “Pushed.”

“Pushed?” Callie sat back on her knees and regarded him through skeptical eyes, “There’s no one here to push you. I was setting up my stuff and Vanessa wasn’t anywhere near you. You must have tripped on something.”

Moving again, this time with Vanessa’s help, Joe finally managed to sit up, rubbing his sore stomach as he did so. He opened his eyes and looked at Callie. She was right of course; however he knew what he had felt. And moments before he had fallen, he had felt someone- or was that something? – give him a hard shove!

“How are you feeling?” Vanessa asked; her voice heavy with concern. She took Callie’s flashlight and shone it on his face and then quickly apologized as Joe shut his eyes and raised his arm to block the brightness, “Sorry.”

“I’m okay,” he lied. In truth his head was pounding, his stomach aching from hitting the hard floor, and he really just wanted to go home and go to bed. But he’d never admit that! So instead he forced a smile to try and remove some of the worry from his pretty girlfriend’s face and hoped she didn’t see his crossed fingers, “Honest.”

Vanessa looked doubtful, “Well your head isn’t bleeding anymore. But you should get it looked at.”

Joe reached up and touched the gash, wincing as he did so. “I’m okay,” he repeated. It had bled alarmingly but he could tell it wasn’t a very deep cut and since it had already stopped bleeding, he wasn’t concerned about needing stitches. “Can we go now?” he asked a bit surprised to see Callie lighting the candles she had placed around.

She glanced at him and then bit her lip, “Well… if you’re not feeling up to it we can drive you home and then come back-“

The boy just shook his head, “And people think I’m single minded.” He sighed not liking the option she’d just presented. “No go right ahead, ignore me and play your game. But make it quick… I want to go home.”

Callie flashed him a smile but Vanessa didn’t look as convinced. “Cal, I think Joe’s right – let’s go home. We can come back tomorrow night-“

“No!” the other blond girl cut her off trying to make her understand, “It has to be tonight! Its Friday and a full moon! You can’t get much more-“

“Do not say it!” Joe interjected rubbing his sore head, “One more ‘its perfect’ and I swear I won’t be held responsible for what I do- regardless of who your boyfriend is!”

“Gee someone’s a bit testy,” Callie groused as she lit the last candle and then moved back over to the Ouija board, frowning when she saw the blood on it from where Joe had struck his head. Taking the towel, she wiped it off and then looked at the blond haired boy. Her gaze softened slightly, “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“What’s this I hear, concern?” Joe snorted irritably. “Go on, play your stupid game. Don’t mind me, heaven forbid I ruin your good time.”

* *  *

Vanessa looked at him sharply, her concern escalating by his surliness. He didn’t even try to retract his tone but before she could dwell on it too much, Callie was already setting up the board. The relationship between her best friend and her boyfriend never ceased to amaze her. They reminded Van more of a typical brother/sister than anything else. She knew that Callie was worried about Joe – her lack of retort to his attitude was evidence of that – however, their affection was well disguised… almost too well at times!

“Baby?” she questioned softly, reaching out to gently brush the hair from his forehead.

Joe looked at her and sighed. “I’m sorry Vanessa… I just really hate this house. And-“he gave her a weak smile, “and my head does hurt… just a bit.”

“Oh baby,” she said, her gray eyes searching his vibrant blue ones but before she could say anything else, he stopped her.

“It’s okay Van, really.”

She leaned over and kissed him, “What in the world did I ever do to deserve you?” And then she picked up the towel from where Callie had dropped it, “I’d better wipe up the blood on the floor – with our luck, one of us will slip and break a leg.”

“With my luck, you mean,” Joe even managed a hint of teasing this time and was rewarded with a small laugh from Vanessa.

“You never heard it from me-“her voice broke off with a gasp.

“What’s wrong?” Joe demanded leaning forward to see what was going on. Callie glanced up at them.

“The blood!” Vanessa said, shining the flashlight on the floor, “It’s gone!”

“What do you mean ‘gone’?” the other girl demanded, getting up and moving towards the spot.

“I mean ‘gone’ as in soaked right into the flooring!” Vanessa explained; her face paling.

“Impossible,” Joe said, although he was seeing exactly that! There was a red stain on the floor but that was it – no blood. “Stone isn’t porous!”

“Porous or not, it’s gone!” White-faced, the girl looked from her boyfriend to Callie, an unsettling fear lacing around her heart as for the first time she was starting to think that maybe this wasn’t such a good idea either!

“Weird, “Callie admitted and then shrugged, “but it’s an old house. Obviously there must be a crack in it that we just can’t see. Come on Vanessa,” she coaxed, “the board is ready!”

Vanessa looked at Joe, but he didn’t say anything. She knew he didn’t want to be here and felt guilty about that, but the attraction of the Ouija board was just too great – she had to try it out! With one final glance at the stain on the floor, she brushed off her momentary hesitation and moved over to sit next to Callie.

The library was now illuminated by flickering candlelight that danced shadows across the large room as the air smelled thickly from their lighting; Joe wrinkled up his nose and stifled a cough. His head was aching as he slowly slid back across the floor until he could rest against the brickwork of the huge fireplace. He sighed and watched the girls intently, his heart still beating just a little faster than usual as his senses were on hyper-alert, expecting trouble but praying for none.

After they had joined hands, Callie and Vanessa placed the fingers of their free hand lightly on a small triangle wedge in the center of the board.

The board itself was very simple. It had the letters of the alphabet, in fancy script, in the center of the board, arranged in two rows. A-M in the first row, N-Z in the second. The rows were slightly bowed, so they looked like a frown; the numbers 0-9, was placed in a single straight row beneath the second line of letters. The word ‘GOOD BYE’ was under the letters and stood out rather ominously. And then in either top corner of the board were the words ‘Yes’ and ‘No’...

With barely concealed excitement, Callie addressed the board. Joe almost laughed at the reverent tone in her voice. “Oh spirits of the Ouija board… we have come here tonight to this place to seek out one who is willing to talk to us! We have questions oh spirits, many questions… is there anyone willing to talk to us?”

The two teen aged girls’ held their breaths in anticipation and then the wedge gave a little shudder and slowly – purposefully - started to move… to the top and to the left…. It stopped on a word.
