THE CHAPTERS

“Okay, what the hell is going on here?” Frank growled, dialing Joe’s cell again, “This is ridiculous!” The phone started ringing…he paced restlessly as he waited. “Come on Joe – pick up! Pick up!” He heard the familiar click as the line was answered, and then once again nothing! Only heavy breathing! “Enough, little brother. You’ve had your fun, okay? Hardy har har! Now talk to me…please!“ A soft click resounded in his ear. The phone had been hung up! An intense feeling washed over him, ramming powerfully into his stomach with enough force to stagger him. Something was wrong! This wasn’t right! He knew it – sensed it, deep within his soul. Something was terribly wrong! He redialed the Shaws’ house, needing to find out what kind of game Mr. Shaw gave his daughter – hopefully it would give him some idea of where his brother and the girls might be. If not, then Frank really had no idea what to do. Maybe he was just being paranoid – overreacting – but then again, maybe not. Either way, he wasn’t about to take any chances – he’d just throttle them all later! * * * Callie looked at the other two teens, her face aglow with excitement, “There’s no one there!” Joe grabbed the phone from her and listened. It was true – there was nothing except silence on the other end! “The phone—” Vanessa started, her gray eyes wide as she looked towards the doorway. “It’s stopped ringing!” She was right – the house was once again quiet – ominously quiet! Joe looked sharply at Vanessa, slammed the phone off, tossed it to Callie and then grabbed each girl by the arm; pulling them towards the doorway,” Move!” he barked. “We’re leaving NOW!” “What?” Callie asked, trying to pull her arm away but Joe held tight, forcing the resisting girl into the darkened hallway, in too much of a hurry to even retrieve the flashlights! “What did you hear?” The boy never paused, just kept up his frenzied pace towards the large entranceway; moonlight-lit at the end of the darker hallway, “Vanessa. I heard Vanessa—” Suddenly Vanessa screamed as a shadow moved across the end of the hallway, blocking their flight! “Damn!” Joe hissed, turning them back the way they came as something sounded from deep within the bowels of the house! It was as if someone was banging against the wall, and the sound followed the teens as they hastily retreated back to the library!! “Hurry!” Joe yelled, shoving the girls into the room and slamming the door shut. He snatched up one of the flashlights from the floor and shone it around the room. “What’s going on?” Callie demanded, flushed and confused; on the verge of tears! “Someone’s playing a sick joke,” Joe decided, looking for something to put up against the door as the sound continued…getting closer and closer! He absently noticed that the candles Callie had lit were now extinguished – and while he thought it was odd, he didn’t have time to reflect on it! “Help me move this!” he commanded, racing towards a heavy wooden table near the back of the room. Immediately the two girls grabbed one end and together they moved the bulky piece of furniture and jammed it up against the door. The sound was just outside the door now, and the handle rattled furiously! “Get back!” Joe yelled as the door was slammed with a savage fury! * * * “Mr. Shaw, I need to know what kind of game you bought Callie?” Frank said as soon as the older man answered the phone. [Well, I know how interested Callie is in the occult, so when I was in Chinatown yesterday I picked up an authentic Ouija board—] Frank heard the man chuckling [Well, as authentic as any of this silliness can be—] A sickening feeling speared the teen. He quickly thanked the man and hung up. An Ouija board? Everything clicked into place! Frank felt all the blood drain from his face…he knew exactly where his brother and the girls were! Deathe House. His paranormal-obsessed girlfriend would have settled for no less! “Damn you, Callie,” he grumbled as he grabbed his coat and hurried downstairs to ask his mom to borrow her car, “what have you guys gotten into this time?” * * * The door groaned but held, as the girls screamed! Joe put an arm around each of them, slowly backing them away as a second assault was launched – a horrid sound that sent chills down their spines! “It’ll hold? Won’t it?” Vanessa whispered desperately, pressing against Joe and grateful for his arm around her as she berated herself for not listening to him in the first place! She heard him hesitate before he answered. “Yeah.” He didn’t sound any more confident than she felt! * * * Frank peeled away from the house, tires squealing! His every instinct was screaming at him to hurry! * * * The table flew away from the door as Joe knocked the girls down, covering their heads barely in time to keep from getting hit as it crashed against the wall behind them with a ground-shaking thud! The door burst open as the boy quickly gained his feet – pounding head forgotten, and ready to meet whatever was coming in through that door! But nothing came, only a silence, heavy and foreboding, smothering them in anticipation! “Joe?” Callie turned fearful brown eyes on him, the gravity of their situation finally hitting her as she whispered, afraid to shatter the silent truce. “What’s happening?” Slowly both she and Vanessa stood up. “I don’t know,” he admitted, his vibrant blue eyes fixed on the gaping doorway; his body tensed as he ushered the girls behind him. He barely dared to breathe, although his heart pounded madly against his chest! With a barely perceptible shift of his gaze, Joe scoped out the room for any viable ways out – other than the door. Directly behind them, a heavy velvet tapestry hung raggedly from the ceiling to the floor, framed by two monstrous bookshelves. Chancing a brief glance, Joe was sure it covered a window – he was counting on it! “There’s a window behind us,” he said quietly to the girls, his attention firmly fixed on the empty doorway again. “I’ll check it out,” Callie said as she quickly moved behind him, scooping up her discarded flashlight as she did so. “It is!” she cried out in relief a few seconds later. “Can you open it?” Joe asked without looking back. “No!” Callie called back, “It’s one big pane!” “In every way,” the blond boy muttered under his breath, and then, “Find some way to break it, Callie – that’s our way out!” * * * Callie’s heart was pounding as she looked around for something to break the window with. The flashlight shone on a heavy brass-looking bookend and the girl quickly moved towards it, picked it up and hurried back to the window, thrusting the tapestry out of the way. Standing back a couple of feet, she raised her hand and threw the bookend at the window! It hit with a dull thud and then fell harmlessly to the floor. “Damn,” she muttered, picking it up again, and this time holding onto it, as she beat against the glass! It still didn’t’ break. ‘What is this stuff made of?’ she wondered, trying to swallow down the surge of panic that threatened to consume her as she cursed her own stubbornness. ‘It had to be this house Callie, didn’t it?’ she mentally scolded once again, pounding against the glass, hard enough that her wrist hurt! But still the glass held! “Joe!” she yelled, “It’s not breaking!” She heard him curse and then two seconds later he was at her side. “I tried using this!” Joe took the weighty bookend, motioned for her to stand back, and then pitched it at the window with a throw that would have made any baseball pitcher envious – it hit the window hard and then, once again, dropped harmlessly to the ground. The window wasn’t even cracked! * * * “Oh s-shit,” Joe whispered as a cold chill, so intense it made his teeth chatter, coursed through his veins – they were in big trouble! “JOE!” Vanessa screamed his name! Joe whirled around, expecting to finally face their tormentor, and then froze in shock! Fire! The room was on fire! And as he watched, the door slammed shut and locked…from the outside. “What happened?” Joe yelled, shaking off the disbelief and taking off his jacket to try and beat back the quickly spreading flames. “I don’t know!” Vanessa sobbed, on the verge of hysteria as she moved away from the fire, “it just happened!” “GET ON THE GROUND!” the boy yelled as the deadly smoke quickly filled the room, and he started to cough. The girls immediately dropped as Joe continued to beat at the flames. But it was no use! With his lungs burning, he dropped his jacket and turned back to the window. Almost doubled over from coughing, he knew there was no choice – if he couldn’t break that window, they would die!
