EPILOGUE

Callie Shaw lounged in the tub for almost an hour after Frank dropped her off. It took her that long to get her turbulent emotions settled down and to finally soak the last of the soot and smoky smell out of her pores. (She did change the water – twice!)

Exhausted but too keyed up to sleep, the girl thought about the strange events of the night and frowned. Vlad Tepes? Why did that name ring a bell? Her curiosity about the spirit was starting to override her fear. That part had been exciting and she did regret leaving the Ouija board behind. She had no desire to ever go back to Deathe House, but her interest was still piqued….

Finally, Callie reluctantly left the soothing bubbles of the bath and dried off. She checked the time, shocked that although it was well after midnight, she wasn’t tired anymore. So sitting down in front of her computer, she decided to see what she could find on their spirit. She typed VLADIMIR TEPES and then pressed enter on the search menu.

Seconds later, her face drained of all color as her eyes scanned site listing after site listing. “Oh my God!” she whispered in terrified awe, “Vlad ‘the Impaler’…Dracula!”

Mindless of the time, Callie picked up her phone and dialed Vanessa’s cell phone – her fingers trembled over each number!

Her best friend had to know!

* * *

Vanessa was sleeping. She was dreaming or rather, having a nightmare…

The corridor was dark. The only lights were smoking candles casting very faint illumination from small cubicles cut into the stone wall. Vanessa reached out and touched the stone, surprised by how shiny it was…and how cold.

Around her everything was cold….

Still she walked, drawn to a room at the end – there were noises coming from the room. Horrible noises…the girl tried to turn around and leave but she couldn’t.

Closer and closer she got. The noises were now distinctly screams – men’s voices mixed with women’s and – and children’s! Now Vanessa hurried! Someone was hurting them – she had to stop them! She had to!

And then she burst into the room –

Vanessa’s eyes flew open as she sat up with a start, a silent scream locked in her throat!

A dream…it was just a dream!!!  With great effort, she sucked in a breath and tried to still her slamming heart as she realized that she was safe in her own bed, in her own room! But that room! Those people – it had been horrible!

Sitting back against her headboard, the blond girl drew her knees up to her chest and tried to stop shaking. She had never had a nightmare of that intensity before, and it was something she was not keen on repeating!

Leaning over slightly, she turned on her bedside lamp and finally let out a relieved sigh as it basked her room in a gentle glow, taming shadows into her desk, chair, bureau and bookshelf. ‘It was just a dream’ she reminded herself; the images of which were already fading with her wakefulness, leaving only the lingering feelings – revulsion and horror….She startled a couple of moments later when her cell phone rang.

‘Who in the world could that be?’ Vanessa wondered, quickly grabbing the phone and answering it before it could wake her mom. It was Callie.

[Vlad the Impaler, Vanessa – our Vladimir Tepes is Vlad the Impaler!] Callie’s excited voice rang in her ear.

“Vlad the Impaler?” Vanessa repeated slowly, not sure she was hearing right and not quite making the connection yet.

[Dracula!]

Vanessa was shocked! With great effort she whispered, “No!”

[Yes! Can you believe it?] Callie burst on enthusiastically [What are the chances?]

“Are you sure?” Vanessa couldn’t believe it – Dracula?

[Oooh, yeah] the other girl said [I searched ‘Vladimir Tepes’ and a million sites came up on Dracula and Vlad the Impaler – Van it was him! Can you believe it? We were talking to the dark lord himself!]

The amount of awe in Callie’s voice was a little alarming. Vanessa felt no excitement about this whatsoever. In fact – given the freshness of her nightmare – she felt nauseous!

“That is horrible!” Vanessa finally managed. “Absolutely horrible!”

[I know, I know] Callie admitted [It’s just – well….Wow].

“Yeah, wow,” was Vanessa’s lackluster response and then the ash blond frowned, “but why us and why here? This isn’t exactly Romania and we aren’t exactly anyone of consequence—”

[I don’t kn-] Callie started and then exhaled sharply [The house, Vanessa! It must have something to do with that house!].

Biting her lip, Vanessa suppressed a shiver and tried to change the subject, her interest in the paranormal fried beyond recognition.  “How was Frank on the ride home?”

That seemed to sober her friend immediately, because she heard Callie sigh and when she spoke again, her voice was a lot less animated. [It went…okay.] Another sigh and then [You know Vanessa I really am lucky to have him.].

“We both are.”  Vanessa couldn’t suppress the smile as she thought about her own Hardy boyfriend.  “Those boys leave nothing to be desired.”

[Yeah] Callie agreed, and then paused before adding [I’m sorry].

“Sorry? For what?” the ash-blond asked.

[For dragging you – and Joe – into this. I almost got you guys k-killed tonight!] Callie tripped over the word.

“Oh Callie – it isn’t all your fault. I certainly wasn’t dragged – I wanted to go as badly as you did!” Vanessa admitted and then added remorsefully, “Joe, however….”

[I know. We should have listened to him….I owe him a major apology about this – if he’ll listen. Look, it’s late. I think I’m going to try and get some sleep]

“I don’t know if I can,” Vanessa sighed, “not after the dream I just had.”

[Want to talk about it?] her best friend offered but Vanessa shook her head, although Callie couldn’t see her.

“Not tonight. Maybe tomorrow when it isn’t so – not so dark.”

[Okay. Well, when you do—]

“I’ll call you. I promise,” and then with a final goodnight and good-bye the two girls hung up.

Vlad the Impaler?’ Vanessa thought as she slid back down under her blankets. She reached to turn off the light but then changed her mind. ‘What did we get ourselves into?’

* * *

Callie didn’t go right to sleep; instead she clicked on the biography of Vladimir Tepes and started reading….

* * *

Joe woke up with a start – where was he? Oh yeah, safe in his own bed. Putting a hand over his racing heart, the teen tried to remember what he had just been dreaming about. But he couldn’t, and decided that maybe that was a blessing, as for one moment, at the instant between dream and waking, he had been terrified!

Still breathing hard, he wiped a hand across his sweat-drenched forehead, quietly got out of bed and moved into the bathroom, surprised by how shaky he felt. He didn’t bother to turn on the light, not wanting to wake his brother up as he got a drink and used the bathroom.

‘That was horrible’, he thought, his feet making soft footfalls on the hardwood floors on the way back to his bed. ‘Whatever that dream was about!’

Closing his eyes, he suppressed a shudder and burrowed down a bit more under his blankets, deciding the dream/nightmare must have been a residual left over from his feelings about being in that house tonight. ‘And what was up with that anyway?’ he wondered, closing his eyes. ‘The spirit of Dracula? Then all that weirdness? I’d like to get my hands on whoever was messing around with us  – if Frank hadn’t gotten there—’ he broke off his thoughts, shivering again. This was not what he wanted to be thinking about at – he glanced at the clock – 1:15 in the morning!

Go to sleep, Hardy,’ he groused. ‘You got stuff to do tomorrow!’

Joe was just nodding off again, when he heard the sound of someone moving around on the landing…soft footsteps coming down the hall…towards his room! He waited a bit tensely, although he was expecting it to be his mother or father checking in on him and Frank. Both his parents had been in bed by the time Joe got home – for which he was thankful, since he didn’t really want to explain where his coat was or why he was in the state he was. Bad enough he’d have to in the morning!

The hair rose on the back of his neck as the footsteps stopped right outside the door! Hesitantly, he sat up, his heart beginning to pound in his chest, again. Something didn’t feel right!

Slowly the doorknob turned…

Joe shivered as a chill permeated the room! The blood in his veins froze when the door began to open…he slid down in his bed and closed his eyes, suddenly too weary to keep them open. They were too heavy, his whole body was too heavy…no, he thought – a whimpered thought. And then nothing more.

* * *

In Deathe House, the bloodied spot on the accursed stone grew just a little larger….
