Blurb: Joe gets a harsh reminder of the past which nearly destroys his
future.

Page: Joe took a step closer, skimmed her dark hair with the palm of
his hand. As he gazed down at her, she raised her head to look up at him.
He swallowed hard, feeling as if he were teetering at the brink of an
abyss. Memories crashed in on him and the past and present blurred
together. He slowly lowered his head...and kissed her.
Something
heavy thunked loudly to the floor and Joe jerked away from Ione. Still
dazed, he turned to see what had caused the noise and realization
hit with brutal clarity as he saw the books on the floor--and
Vanessa in the classroom doorway. Joe cleared his throat.
"Vanessa--"
Vanessa, her
eyes full of tears, shook her head and took off running down the corridor.
Joe took a step to go after
her but a hand on his arm stopped him. He looked down at that small
slender hand and then slowly looked over at Ione.
"How
does it feel?" whispered Ione, her violet eyes flashing. "How
does it feel?" she asked
again, almost savagely.
