Willow Slade looked up from the magazine she was leafing through and smiled. "They're on their way back." Laura studied her for a long moment. "How can you possibly know?" Willow set the magazine down and sighed. "I was born with a sixth sense, if you will. I can sense things but only with someone who's kin to me, like Sully, or Lyn because she's my daughter. Fenton turned from the window. "I'm not sure I fully understand but I've heard of psychics helping police all over the country. I can't imagine that it could be a scam, not every incident, because in some cases, the psychic is the only one who can truly help." Willow gave a nod in his direction. "My brother is a magician, nothing fancier than perhaps Houdini or Copperfield. He's very good at what he does. Rowan looks like she does for the music. In her heyday, Goth rock and speed metal were most popular." Laura's gaze slid to Reiden and the wolf. "What about him?" "Fang? He's a wolf, but tame. Reiden got him from an old friend in British Columbia." "I think she meant me," said Reiden, calmly enough. "I'm sure you've heard the rumors that I'm a werewolf. I hope I'm not for real. Lycanthropy is an insidious disease and I'm trying to deal with it. To be on the safe side, during the full moon, I steer clear of everyone." "I'm...sorry," whispered Laura. "It's okay. It was worse in East Anglia. People accused me to my face, threatened bodily harm more than once." Reiden shrugged. "The doctors all assure me it's just in my head. I hope they're right." "I see headlights," said Sullivan, excitedly. He was standing at the window as well. "Looks like your Honda, Reiden." The front door banged open. "What do you think? I'm going to go back to sleep and threaten anyone who disturbs me—” Dyllan broke off, seeing everyone staring at him. "Well, just consider that fair warning." He darted for the stairs and hurried up the steps. Merlyn walked in, looking sleepy. "I swear, I'm not related to him." She glanced at Sullivan. "You adopted him, right?" Sullivan chuckled. "You'll eventually grow used to him." Merlyn walked over to her mother and sat down beside Willow on the couch. "Yeah, right." Laura stood up as her boys walked in next. "Frank, Joe, oh my God, you're okay." She hurried over to them and pulled them into an embrace. "My God, you scared the life out of me." Joe turned red. "Sorry, Mom," he muttered. He wrapped his arms around her. "I'm sorry." Frank hugged her back. "Me too." Fenton walked over to them. "Where's Sheridan?" "Waiting for the police and an ambulance," said Frank. "So this hit man is taken care of?" asked Fenton, an angry edge to his voice. Joe nodded. "We think the airbag fractured something because he wasn't moving much." Laura took a deep breath. "Airbag?" she asked worriedly. Joe and Frank told everyone what had happened; explaining how they'd wanted to get Morales and stop looking over their shoulder. Frank explained what had happened next. "I still don't know how he knew we were here." Leigh and Quinn had joined the group while the brothers were talking. She walked over to Joe and plucked on the sleeve of his jacket. "Take this off, please." Joe frowned at her but took the jacket off. As he did so, he stared, noting the absence of his initials on the collar. "Hey, this isn't mine." He held it up, looked it over. "Looks like mine." Fenton took the jacket and frowned. "It's possible there's some sort of tracker in this one." He laid the jacket across the coffee table and began to run his palms over the fabric. A few seconds later, he'd found the small tracker. Joe scowled. "So he could have taken us at any time." "Except Sheridan kept popping up," said Frank. "I guess we should be glad he did." Joe grunted. "He doesn't like my name, doesn't like me, why should I care." "Joe, honey," said Laura. "I'm sure he's just been working on this case." Frank shook his head. "No. Sheridan said Joe reminded him of someone named Jordan Sattler. He also said that the other people that got involved down in Barbados were newlyweds and the groom was named..." Frank's eyes widened. "No way." Joe looked over at his brother. "What?" "Newlyweds. Married couple. Guy's name is Joe." Joe blinked. "The writer lady with the Aston-Martin? Whoa." Merlyn sat up straight, startled. "Casi and Joe? Come to think of it, they did go to Barbados for their honeymoon back in May." Just then the door opened again and Sheridan walked in. When everyone looked at him, he sighed. "Who's been talking about me?" "You were talking about Casi and Joe MacKensey?" asked Merlyn, standing up. Sheridan looked surprised. "Yeah. Met them down in Bridgetown." Sheridan glanced over at Joe. "It's not like I hate you or anything. It just struck me as strange. You remind me of Sattler and your name is Joe. Weird coincidence." Fenton turned to his sons. "I believe you two were going to come clean about Halloween when we were interrupted." Joe and Frank shared a long look. Frank took a deep breath. "A contract killer came after us on Halloween night. Sheridan said he's called the Shadow." "His real name is Orion Slade," said Archimedes Slade quietly. "He used this family to confuse people, especially your sons." Laura frowned. "What happened? I know when Vanessa came by to get Joe and I told her you were both running an errand, she went white." "We were having the party at the old caretaker's place out at Birch Road Cemetery," said Frank. "Callie and Vanessa had gone early to bring some stuff and heard someone upstairs. They came and told us and we went to check it out." "There was no one there, in the house anyway," added Joe. "We saw someone in the cemetery and gave chase." "And we found the freshly dug graves," said Frank, watching his mother carefully. When she sat down abruptly in a chair, he walked over to her. "We came out okay, Mom." Laura searched his face as if she could tell whether he was just saying it to convince her or if he really meant it. "Oh God, all you said that night was that you got sick on candy and food and that you and Joe didn't feel up to school the next day." Fenton turned to Sheridan. "Tell me you've got both bastards where they'll never hurt anyone again." Sheridan nodded. "I do. The real problem is the person who hired them." Fenton took a deep breath and studied his wife and sons for a long moment. "That's my job."
