Laura Hardy stepped into the house and found it odd that it was so quiet. She'd seen the black van in the driveway and the absence of her husband's car. Although it didn’t happen often, had the boys gone with their father? She lifted her eyes to the stairs and started to call their names when the rush of footsteps gave her her answer. She smiled as Joe came into view. "Hey, honey."

"Oh, it's you. Uh, hey, Mom."

Laura gave him another look. "Joe."

"I thought you were Dad – he kind of left out of here quick."

Laura arched a blond eyebrow. "Probably business, dear. Is Frank here too?"

"Yes. Um, Mom, Dad kind of told us to stay here." Joe shifted his weight from one foot to the other. "Like we were grounded or something."

Laura's other eyebrow shot up. "He did? I thought we discussed the bumper last night."

"We did," came Frank's voice from behind his brother. He stepped around Joe and continued down to the first floor. He explained what had happened earlier with the homicide detective. "Dad was supposed to be—”

The door swinging open interrupted Frank. He saw his father stride in and shove the door closed. Fenton turned and went still, seeing three people staring at him. "Boys, we need to talk."

"Fenton," began Laura, only to pause. She searched her husband's face for a long moment. "Later, then."

He nodded and gave her a quick kiss. "Later." He turned to Frank and Joe. "Come on."

Joe and Frank shared a look and followed their father to his study; stepping inside made Frank feel guilty for even thinking of hacking into his father's computer. "What happened, Dad?" he asked.

"I alerted someone at the police station somehow when I started the background search." Fenton let out a loud sigh. "Damn, Frank, I understand why you were so bent out of shape. The man—"

Joe grunted. "So you met him. Did he say anything?"

"Only that he doesn't believe any teenager is good. Only what has kept said teenager from committing that first crime."

Joe frowned, feeling the first stirrings of anger himself. "Where does he get off saying that? I know lots of people who'd never commit a crime. Chet, Tony, the whole gang."

"I know," Fenton sighed. "If he'd been willing to at least compromise I'd be willing to show him the upstanding younger citizens of Bayport. But he refuses to see beyond his own prejudices."

"So what do we do?" asked Frank in the sudden quiet.

"Stay clear of him.  Keep to yourselves, your friends.  And God forbid anything happen between now and next Monday.  I don't care if aliens land in the town square, you're not investigating anything."

Joe's blue eyes went wide. "Dad! No."

"It's for the best. Now go do whatever you were doing." Fenton motioned his sons to go, and glared at the computer.

Joe reluctantly led the way out of his father's office. "I can't believe this is happening," he whispered to Frank. "It's not fair. Some pissy West Coast cop is causing all sorts of crap."

Frank shushed him and shoved him toward the stairs. "Be quiet before Mom hears you."

Joe grunted, and he and Frank hurried upstairs to Frank's bedroom. "This is ridiculous, Frank, and unfair."

Frank pushed his bedroom door closed and turned to look squarely at his brother. "Then we'll just have to do something about it."
