Nancy couldn’t believe Ned. She
thought he’d be more understanding. She was shocked by his behavior. She
knew he was concerned about her, but she never expected Ned to behave
like he did.
Nancy heard the door open and pulled her hands away. She looked up as her father, Carson Drew, stepped into the room. Carson saw her and asked, “Was Ned just here?” “Yeah,” Nancy admitted. “He couldn’t stay long.” “Are you all right?” Carson asked, coming into the living room. Nancy remained quiet. She wasn’t sure if she was all right. He said gently, “Nancy, I’m here if you want to talk.” “Thanks, Dad,” Nancy said, forcing a smile on her face. Carson nodded and left the room. Nancy leaned back on the couch. She still couldn’t figure out what had gotten into Ned. She knew she needed to focus on Ethel’s problem. She decided to go check out the man and see if she could spot Vicki. * * * * * A half-hour later, Nancy was at the mall. She wanted through the main area and saw a group of older teens hanging out at one end. The group was being loud. They were wearing black leather jackets or leather vests. The entire group was wearing black. Nancy watched as people tried to walk past the group and were pushed away by the group members, who then started laughing. Nancy knew what Vicki looked like, but couldn’t spot her in the group. She was looking at the group when she noticed one person was staring at her. The person moved away from the others, coming toward her. It was a guy. He was wearing a black leather vest and T-shirt. As the guy got closer, she realized she wasn’t going to be able to get close to them to find Vicki. She knew she was too well known in River Heights and it would be nearly impossible for her to find anything out. Nancy went into a music store and started browsing through the selections while she kept an eye on the target. After a few minutes, she left the music store. She saw the group was still at one end of the mall. She went in the other direction. She knew she was going to need help. This case was going to be more difficult than she anticipated. She knew she wouldn’t get any help from Ned. She knew there was someone else who would be willing to assist her. She knew she had an important call to make. * * * * * Frank Hardy walked through the front door of his house in Bayport. He had been out jogging while his brother, Joe, was playing football with their friends. Their parents were out of town visiting friends. Frank had gone jogging because he wanted to work out. He had been spending too much time at his computer and felt that jogging was a way to work out before his body took the shape of his computer chair. He made his way upstairs. He went into his room and grabbed his things to take a shower. As he was about to the leave the room, the phone rang. He grabbed it. “Hello?” “Hi, Frank. It’s Nancy.” “Hey there. I’m surprised to hear from you. Is everything okay?” “I have a problem and need your help.” “What is it?” Frank asked, sitting down on his bed. Nancy told Frank about the case she was on and how she needed someone to go undercover to find this girl. Nancy said, “I’d do it myself, but I’d be recognized right away. I know I have to help her.” “I’ll help. I know Joe will too. We’ll come out as soon as we can.” “Frank, I really appreciate this.” “It’s no problem. You’ve helped us out in the past. This is the least we could do,” Frank said. “I’ll call you back when we know what time we’ll be there.” “All right,” Nancy said. “I’ll talk to you later.” “Bye,” Frank said and hung up the phone.
