Frank heard the group laughing as
they hurried away. He kept his hand on his face. He felt someone sit down
beside him. Then he felt a hand on his arm. He moved his hands away from
his face and tried to open his eyes. His left eye hurt. He opened his
right eye slightly.
“This doesn’t look good,” Nancy said, turning Frank’s face to get a better look. Frank looked around the best he could and saw the group was making their way around to the other side of the pond. He felt Nancy touch his cheek and he winced. Nancy said, “You need to get some ice on your eye. It’s already swelling.” Nancy shook her head. “I can’t believe Joe hit you.” “Joe was only acting. It might have been a test. If it was, then Joe passed.” “It should’ve been a different test.” “Joe did what he had to do.” Frank got to his feet. “Come one. I need to get some ice.” “All right.” Nancy got to her feet and they went in search of ice. * * * * * That evening, Frank was alone in the hotel room. Nancy had gone home and was going to try and get in touch with Ned. Frank was waiting to hear from Joe. Frank figured his little brother was with the group, getting accustomed with each member along with what they did. He just hoped Joe was controlling his temper. He knew how easy it was for Joe to become angry. He didn’t want to bail Joe out of a sticky situation. He looked at the closed door and wished Joe would return. He wanted to talk the case over with Joe and what he found out from Vicki. He wanted this to be solved soon so that it wouldn’t interfere with Nancy’s wedding. It was getting late and Frank didn’t like it one bit. He began to worry. He knew it was possible Joe had crashed with his new friends for the case, but he hated waiting. He knew Joe really detested waiting, but he also disliked it, especially when he had no real clue as to where is brother was. He had this feeling that there was trouble, somewhere, and hoped that Joe was not in the middle of it. * * * * * Nancy sat in the living room staring at the telephone. She reached for the phone, then stopped. She pulled her hand back. She’d been sitting by the phone for an hour. She knew it was time to talk to Ned. She knew they needed to resolve their problems. She knew they needed to make up, because she missed Ned. She wished she could just turn back time and make things right, but that wasn’t a possibility. She wished they had never fought. She knew she was partially at fault. Nancy reached for the phone knowing she needed to know where they stood. She dialed the phone. It rang once. Twice. “Hello?” It was Ned. “Hi, Ned. It’s Nancy.” “Hi.” “I was hoping we could talk.” “There’s nothing to talk about,” Ned said. Nancy could tell Ned was still angry. “Ned, I think there’s a lot we need to talk about. Can we meet somewhere so that we can?” Ned was quiet for a moment. He finally said, “I can’t. I’m busy.” “Ned, I want to talk. I want to apologize. I wasn’t thinking about your feelings when I was asked to take this case. I just want to talk things over.” Nancy stopped. She expected Ned to say something, but he was silent. She felt as if her stomach was being twisted into knots. She asked, “Don’t you have something to say?” “I don’t have anything to say. Everything was said Friday night.” “Ned, we really need to talk. We’re supposed to get married next weekend. All this needs to be cleared up before then.” “I think we should cancel the wedding,” Ned said quietly. “What?” Nancy couldn’t believe she heard Ned correctly. “I think we should cancel the wedding,” he repeated. “Why?” “I’ve got to go.” The line went dead. Nancy was stunned. She slowly set the phone back on the receiver. She couldn’t believe Ned wanted to cancel the wedding. She didn’t think things were that bad. She thought they would be able to work things out. She was shocked he wouldn’t talk to her at all. She knew she needed to talk to someone. Her best friends, Bess Marvin and George Fayne, were out of town and wouldn’t be back until Wednesday. She had to talk to someone and that one person immediately came to mind. Nancy got to her feet after writing a quick note. The note was to Carson and Hannah know she’d gone out. She folded the note and went into the hallway. She put the note on the banister. She turned and left the house.
