CHAPTER 19

Frank heard knocking. He opened his eyes and looked around. He realized he was in his hotel room. He sat up and rubbed his face, wincing when he came in contact with his eye. He wondered what had woken him. All of a sudden, the knocking continued. He got to his feet and staggered to the door. He pulled the door open.

He was surprised to see Nancy standing there. He looked closely and realized she was upset about something. Frank said, “Come in.”

He stepped back so Nancy could come into the room. He closed the door and turned to look at her. Nancy’s back was to him. He reached out and put a hand on her shoulder.

Nancy turned around. She looked at him. He could see tears streaming down her cheeks. “Nancy?”

Nancy started crying. Frank pulled her close as her cries increased in intensity. Frank was stunned. He had never seen her this upset before. He knew something was really wrong. He held her close for a few minutes until she calmed herself down.

She took a step back from Frank as she wiped her eyes. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to so this in front of you.”

Nancy sat down on Joe’s bed as Frank sat down on his. He handed her a couple tissues. He asked gently, “Can you tell me what happened?”

Nancy took a ragged breath. “I took your advice. I called Ned hoping we could resolve this problem. I wanted to talk. But Ned didn’t. He ignored me. I apologized, but he didn’t seem to care.” She looked at the floor. “Ned wants to cancel the wedding.”

“No way. I can’t believe Ned said that.”

“For the first time in my life, I really don’t know what to do.” Nancy resumed crying.

Frank moved over to the other bed and sat down beside her. He put his arm around her shoulder. He couldn’t believe Ned wouldn’t accept her apology. He never thought Ned would be so mean.

“Nancy, you need to give Ned some time,” Frank said. “I don’t think he meant what he said.”

“I don’t know. I don’t think things will ever work out.”

“It will,” Frank said, trying to sound reassuring. “I know you and Ned belong together. I also know you and Ned will be together.”

Nancy smiled slightly. “I hope so.”

Frank heard creaking. He rolled to his side as he slowly opened his eyes to the dark room. He saw the door to the room slowly open. The light from the hall did not help in identifying the person coming into the room. Frank stayed motionless.

He watched as the door closed. He saw a shadow. It moved toward the bathroom. Frank jumped off the bed. He grabbed the shadow and they started wrestling. They both hit the floor hard.

“Stop!” the shadow said. Frank realized who it was.
