CHAPTER 24

Three hours later, Nancy was at the controls of a small two-seater Cessna plane with Ned as her co-pilot. They were soaring over the water searching for lifeboats. Nancy, Ned and Joe had offered their services to help search. Joe was on one of the Coast Guard boats while Ned and Nancy were doing a search by air.

Nancy kept glancing at the water below hoping to see some survivors waiting to be rescued. Nancy and Ned stayed in the air until the sin began to set. They had left a message at the hotel for Callie letting them know their plans and that she shouldn’t expect them for lunch, but they would meet at dinnertime.

Nancy taxied the plane down the runway to the hanger. The plane came to a stop and she shut the engine off. Ned unbuckled his seatbelt and started to get out of his seat.

But Nancy just sat there looking at the control panel. She felt devastated. There had been so sign of any lifeboats or any people She wasn’t sure how much more she could take. She couldn’t picture her life without her father in it. They were so close since the death of her mother. She needed to find her father soon.

“Nancy,” a voice said breaking into her thoughts.

“Huh,” Nancy said turning her head. She saw Ned looking at her. “I’m sorry. Did you say something?”

“Come on,” Ned said taking her hand. “Let’s get out of here.”

“We can’t give up the search.”

“We won’t. But we can’t search in the dark. We’ll go back out in the morning.”

“Really?”

Ned nodded and helped Nancy out of the plane. As one of the mechanics came up to them, Nancy saw Joe standing by a rental car. Nancy leaned against Ned as they walked toward the car.

As they headed back to the hotel, no one said a word. They were all concerned about Fenton, Laura and Carson. They couldn’t stop thinking the worst.

When they arrived at the hotel, they went directly into the dining room ready to meet up with Callie and Gertrude. As they walked in, Nancy saw Hannah Gruen, the Drew’s housekeeper, and Eloise Drew, her aunt.

The two of them looked up as the three of them moved toward the table. Hannah and Eloise jumped to their feet and hugged Nancy.

When they broke apart, Nancy sat down next to Eloise and Ned sat on Nancy’s other side with Joe beside him. Hannah sat on the other side of Eloise.

Hannah asked, “Nancy, are you all right?”

“I’m just worried about Dad,” Nancy said. “We just can’t seem to find him.”

“We will find him,” Ned said confidently, then looked at Joe. “And Mr. and Mrs. Hardy too.”

At that moment, Callie and Gertrude entered the dining room. Once they were seated and the introductions made, Joe asked about Frank.

“Nothing’s changed,” Callie said.

“He looks so pale,” Gertrude said with concern. “It would be so much better if he woke up.”

“He’ll wake up when he’s ready,” Joe said.

“Did you have any luck searching?” Callie asked.

“No,” Ned said. “We didn’t find a single lifeboat.”

“Isn’t it possible they were already rescued?” Callie asked.

“It’s possible, but unlikely,” Ned said. “If they had been rescued, we should have seen the empty lifeboat.”

“But there was nothing,” Nancy said.

“It’s so frustrating,” Callie said. “I wish there was more we could do.”

Joe had been half listening to the others talk. He suddenly realized who was responsible for everything that happened on the cruise: Victoria. Joe thought, Victoria was at fault and is going to pay.

Joe jumped to his feet. Nancy asked, “What’s going on? Where are you going?”

“To get some answers.” Joe turned and left the dining room.

Nancy got to her feet and said, “I’ll be back.”

Nancy hurried after Joe with Ned close behind. They caught up to him as he left the hotel. Ned asked, “Where are we going?”

“To the police station,” Joe said walking quickly. “I want to talk to her.”

“Is she there?” Ned asked.

“I don’t know, but that’s the most likely spot.”
