CHAPTER 24

The phone rang. Joe pulled the pillow over his head hoping to block out the sound. The phone continued to ring. Joe reached for the receiver and picked it up. Joe put the phone to his ear and said, "Hello?"

"Joe, it’s Callie."

"What is it, Callie?"

"We’re in the dining room having dinner. Why don’t you join us?"

"I’ll be there shortly."

Joe put the phone down and rolled over on his bed. He looked at the ceiling and thought about getting up. He knew if he didn’t make it down to the dining room, he’d get another phone call from Callie. He rolled out of bed and went down to the dining room.

During dinner, no one talked about the cruise. Everyone felt it was better to leave it in the past. Fenton said, "Nancy, I know you are engaged to Ned. I was wondering if you two have set a date, yet."

"Actually, we have," Nancy said glancing at Ned. He took her hand and gave it a squeeze. "We decided we are going to get married the second Saturday in July."

"That’s wonderful," Laura said. "You two look so happy together."

"It’ll be perfect," Nancy said. She glanced at her father. She felt really good that her father was alive and he was going to be sharing that day with her.

"Oh, Joe," Callie said. "Frank wants you to come to the hospital tonight. He said he needed to talk to you."

"I’ll head over after dinner," Joe said picking at his food.

As they sat through the rest of dinner and dessert, Joe let his thoughts wander. He couldn’t believe how much Victoria had hurt him or that he had fallen for another girl when he had Vanessa back home. Sure, she wasn’t able to come with him, but that didn’t matter. He knew he needed to talk to her. He wished she was with him now.

When dinner was finally over, Joe headed for the hospital by himself. Nancy and Ned decided to spend some time alone together. Fenton was taking Laura and Gertrude out. Callie was going to get some rest and Carson was planning to make some calls.

Joe made his way up to Frank’s room. As he approached the room, he could hear voices coming from behind the door. He pushed open the door and saw Frank was sitting up in bed. He could see his brother was watching the news. Frank no longer had an oxygen tube attached to his nose. Joe said, "Hey, Frank. How are you feeling?"

"Pretty good," Frank said turning the television off with the remote. "I can’t wait to get out of here. The food here is lousy."

"Everyone will be relieved once you’re out of here," Joe said sitting down in the chair beside Frank’s bed.

Frank noticed Joe wasn’t acting like his normal self. He seemed distracted. "Joe, tell me what’s going on."

"What do you mean?"

"You can’t hide it. Something’s definitely bothering you."

"I went to see Victoria today. She’s in police custody." Joe went on to explain everything that happened at the police station. When he was finished, he looked directly at Frank and said, "I should’ve listened to you that night at dinner. You were right to suspect her."

"I wish I wasn’t. I didn’t want to see you get hurt."

"I deserve everything I got." Joe got to his feet and began pacing around the room. "That night I regretted fighting with you. I knew you were looking out for me, but I needed to do what I could."

"I shouldn’t have mouthed off."

Joe looked at Frank when he stopped pacing. He said, "I thought there was something you wanted to talk to me about."

"Yeah, there is," Frank said. "It’s not as important as it was, but I remember what happened after you stormed away from the table that night."

"You’ve remembered?"

Frank nodded. "I went looking for you so we could talk about Victoria. I wasn’t having much luck. I walked toward the pool, then stopped when I heard two voices, a male and a female. They were talking about their itinerary and the female said something about trusting the other person and didn’t understand why someone had to die."

"The guy I stumbled over must have been part of the plan, but ended up being a casualty for their destructive plan."

"I wish I could’ve remembered sooner," Frank said. "Then we could’ve escaped the cruise ships before the explosions."

"Don’t worry about it," Joe said. "Most of the people made it to the lifeboats and have been rescued."

"You know, I never meant to be suspicious about Victoria. There was something about her the first time we met that sent a warning bell off in my head. Nancy had the same feeling, but we both hoped we were wrong."

"At least you sensed something," Joe said. "I went into it blindly, as usual."

"But you always pick the good-looking ones when you jump in."

"Yeah, but they also seem to be trouble."

Before Frank could say anything, the door opened and the doctor came in. He looked at Frank and asked, "How are you feeling?"

"Pretty good."

"Any dizziness? Headache? Upset stomach?"

"No," Frank said shaking his head. "I feel fine. I just look like I should be riding on the back of a camel."

The doctor picked up Frank’s chart and looked at it. A moment later he put it down and looked at Frank. "You’re doing quite well."

"Good," Frank said. "I can’t wait to get out of here."

"That could be arranged."

"What?" Frank and Joe asked simultaneously.

"Because you’re progressing so well, I’m going to release you tomorrow."

"Excellent," Joe said with a smile.

"You’re not joking, are you?" Frank asked.

"I’m serious," the doctor said. "You’ll have to come back the following day to have the stitches removed, but other than that, I don’t see any problem with you being released."

"This is great," Joe said.

"But there is one thing."

"I knew there was a catch," Frank said.

"You need to get some rest," the doctor said glancing at his watch. "And visiting hours are just about over."

"All right," Joe sad and the doctor left the room. Joe looked at Frank. "I’ll let Mom and Dad know what’s going on."

"Okay," Frank said. "I’ll see you tomorrow."

"Night," Joe said and left Frank’s hospital room.
