CHAPTER 24

Nancy got Frank to the edge of the pool and Ned reached in and pulled him out of the water as Nancy climbed up the ladder. Nancy pushed her hair out of her eyes as she kneeled beside Frank. She reached for his neck as she put her ear to his mouth. Frank was not breathing, but he had a pulse.

Nancy said, "We need some help."

As Ned ran off in search of help, Nancy started rescue breathing to get air into his lungs. After a few minutes, Frank started breathing on his own, but didn’t wake up. Nancy kept a close eye in Frank as she waited for Ned to return with help, making sure Frank was still breathing and had a pulse.

Within minutes, Ned returned with Dr. Salmer and four crew members carrying a stretcher.

"He’s breathing," Nancy said stepping away so the doctor could get beside Frank. She wrapped her arms around herself. "He’s been breathing on his own for the past few minutes."

"All right," Dr. Salmer said. "Let’s get him on the stretcher and down to the infirmary."

Nancy and Ned watched as Frank was carefully moved to the stretcher and carried away from the pool. Ned put his arm around Nancy’s shoulder and said, "We need to tell Joe and his parents."

Nancy nodded and tried to stop from shaking. The wind had picked up and it chilled her in her wet skirt and blouse. Together they headed for Joe’s stateroom.

When they got there, Ned knocked on the door. A moment later, the door opened and Joe ushered them in and they saw Callie sitting on Frank’s bed. Joe noticed Nancy was soaking wet. After Joe closed the door, he grabbed a towel out of the bathroom and handed it to Nancy.

"I see you checked out every possible spot, Nancy. Even the bottom of the pool," Joe said with a grin.

Nancy didn’t return his smile. Instead, she quickly wrapped the towel around her shoulders. "We found Frank."

"So, where is he?" Joe asked.

"In the infirmary," Ned said. "We found him floating facedown in the pool. Nancy got him out and breathing before the doctor arrived."

"We need to go down there," Joe said, his face done white.

"You should leave a note for your parents," Nancy said.

"Right," Joe said scribbling a quick note.

The four of them left the stateroom. Joe taped the note to his parent’s door and then headed down to the infirmary.

* * * * *

When they walked into the infirmary, Dr. Salmer looked at them and Joe asked, "Where’ my brother?"

"You mean the young man pulled from the pool?" Dr. Salmer asked.

"Yes," Joe said quickly. "Where is he?"

Dr. Salmer walked over to a curtain and pulled it back. They saw Frank lying on a bed with a blanket covering him up to his chin and an oxygen mask over his nose and mouth.

"Oh," Callie said as she kneeled next the bed. She reached under the blanket and grabbed hold of Frank’s hand.

They could see how pale Frank’s face was and hoped he would be all right.

After clearing his throat, the doctor asked, "Does anyone know what happened?"

"No," Nancy responded turning to face the doctor. We heard a splash as we were heading toward the pool. When we got there, we saw someone floating facedown."

"Nancy jumped in to rescue him. We didn’t realize who it was until she reached the edge of the pool," Ned added.

Before the doctor could ask anymore questions, the door to the infirmary opened and Fenton and Laura came rushing in. Fenton asked, "What happened to my son?"

As Laura moved over toward the bed, Dr. Salmer said, "Your son almost drowned this evening. Luckily, this young lady rescued him."

"Is he going to be all right?" Laura asked after looking at Frank’s pale face.

"I won’t know for sure until he wakes up," Dr. Salmer said moving toward the bed. "When I was examining him, I noticed two large bumps on the back of his head."

"Someone must have hit him in the back of the head," Nancy said trying to keep her teeth from chattering.

Dr. Salmer quickly handed her a blanket and said, "We can’t have the heroine getting pneumonia."

Nancy smiled her thanks and let Ned wrap the blanket around her because she was shaking badly from the cold feeing of her wet clothes.

At that moment, Laura gasped. Everyone looked at Frank and saw his eyes were opened slightly. Fenton said, "Take it easy. Frank. You’re going to be all right."

Frank closed his eyes.

Dr. Salmer said, "That’s a good sign. I’d like to keep him here so I can monitor his condition."

"Absolutely," Fenton said and turned to the rest of them. ""Why don’t you guys head to your rooms and get some sleep. Laura and I will stay with Frank."

"I’d like to stay, too," Callie said. "If it’s all right."

"Me too," Joe said.

"I don’t see a problem as long as you’re quiet," Dr. Salmer said.

"Please keep us updated," Nancy said. "We’ll come back in the morning."

"All right," Fenton said. "And Nancy, thank you for rescuing Frank."

Nancy smiled and left the infirmary with Ned. As they headed back to their rooms, Ned put his arm around Nancy’s shoulder and pulled her close. He asked, "Are you all right?"

"I’m worried about Frank."

"I know, but he always seems to bounce back when he gets hurt."

"I wonder if someone purposely hit Frank in the head or he bumped into something."

"We won’t know until he wakes up and is ready for visitors," Ned said. "Maybe he stumbled onto something he wasn’t supposed to see or hear."

"It’s possible."

They stopped outside Nancy’s door. Ned lifted her chin and gave her a kiss. When they broke apart, he said, "Don’t worry about Frank. You did everything right when you rescued him. Tomorrow, when he’s ready to answer questions, we’ll know our next step."

Nancy stood on her tiptoes and returned the kiss. She leaned back and looked at him. "How did I ever wind up with someone as understanding as you?"

"You’re really lucky, just like me," Ned said. "Get some sleep. I’ll see you in the morning."

"I love you," Nancy said.

"I love you, too."
