The next morning, Nancy and Ned had breakfast in the dining room with Carson. They had just started to eat when Joe and Callie came in. As they sat down, Nancy asked, "How is he?" "Sleeping," Joe said rubbing his face. "He came to a couple times during the night, but he didn’t say anything." "What does the doctor say?" Carson asked. "He thinks Frank is going to be all right," Callie said with relief in her voice. "Are your parents still with him?" Ned asked. "Yeah," Joe said. "My mom is really worried about him despite what the doctor says." "Hopefully he’ll be able to tell us what happened last night," Nancy said. "He should be awake in a little while," Joe said. "We’ll see him then," Nancy said. After they finished breakfast, Carson went to the gym while the rest of them headed to the infirmary. As they walked through the door, they saw Frank was awake. He was sitting up and eating his breakfast with his parents. "Hey, Frank," Joe said. "How are you feeling?" "Who is Frank?" He asked looking around at everyone. "You are," Joe said as a look of alarm crossed his face. "No, I don’t think that’s my name. It doesn’t seem right." "But it is," Laura said. Fenton looked at Joe. "Frank seems to have amnesia." "Great," Joe mumbled. Callie moved up closer to the bed and asked, "Don’t you remember me?" Frank looked closely at Callie. He asked, "Are you my sister?" At that moment Dr. Salmer walked in and over to the bed. He noticed Frank was awake and asked, "How are you feeling, young man?" "My head hurts and I can’t remember who I am." "That’s all right," Dr. Salmer said. "Loss of memory sometimes occurs with a head injury. If you don’t force it, your memory should return." "But what if it doesn’t?" Frank asked. "You need to relax," Dr. Salmer said. "You also need to rest." "We get the picture," Nancy said. She looked at Frank. "We’ll see you later." "Bye," Frank said. The four of them left the room and went up on deck. They stood by the rail looking silently into the water. A few minutes passed and Nancy was the first to speak. "I wish I knew how Frank got into the pool last night." "He must have stumbled onto something," Ned said as he leaned back against the railing beside her. "I knew this was going to be a bad trip." Joe said. "Look, it was an accident that Frank got injured," Nancy said putting a hand on Joe’s shoulder. "It’s not your fault." "If I hadn’t lost my temper last night, none of this would’ve happened." "Joe, you didn’t hit Frank on the head and cause him to lose his memory and you didn’t throw him in the pool either," Nancy said. "But who did?" Callie asked. "And why?" Joe countered. Nancy began to pace. "Frank must have found or done something to upset the people who are after Victoria, if they really exist." "Nancy," Joe began. "Joe, it’s just an idea," Nancy said. "But if he found something, what could it be?" Ned asked. "We won’t know until his memory comes back, if it comes back at all," Callie said sadly. "Joe, where did you trip over the body?" Nancy asked. "Up on deck," Joe said. "Show me." Joe led the three of them toward the stern and pointed out the spot where he’d found the body. As Nancy started to search the area, Joe said, "I looked around after the doctor walked away." "Did you come across anything?" Nancy asked looking at the wall. "Now that you mention it, I did find something. A pendant that probably came from a necklace." "What did it look like?" Nancy asked. "It was a gold pendant in the shape of a horse. I think there was an inscription on it." Nancy stood up and looked at Joe. "What did it say?" "I don’t remember." "Where is it?" Nancy asked. "Probably in the pants I wore two days ago," Joe said. "I put it in my pocket." "Let’s go examine it." They quickly went down to Joe’s room. As he opened the door, he could see everything was scattered all over the place. Someone had ransacked his room. "Someone was obviously looking for something," Joe said walking into the room. "But what?" Nancy asked. "Maybe valuables?" Callie suggested. "Then why did they leave Frank’s computer?" Ned asked standing by the closed computer. "Is there anything on it?" Nancy asked moving toward Ned. "Let’s see," Ned said flipping the screen up and looking closely. There was a message written across the screen. "ALL FILES DELETED." "Great," Nancy said turning back to face Joe. "Whatever is on there is long gone. Joe, where’s the pendant?" "In the front of my black jeans." "Are you sure?" Nancy asked as she continued to look around. Joe nodded and Callie asked, "Don’t you think we should call the captain and tell him what happened?" "Yeah," Joe said. "I’ll go get him," Ned said. "Lock the door behind me." Ned left and they continued to search the room for the pair of black jeans Joe had been wearing without disturbing the mess the intruder made. Twenty minutes or so later, Ned returned to the room. He knocked on the door and Joe opened it to reveal Ned standing with a gentleman wearing white slacks and a white shirt. The gentleman looked to be in his mid-50s with white hair on top of his head. "I’m Captain Stallson. I understood someone broke into your room." "Yes, Captain," Joe said as Ned and the captain came into the room. Ned closed the door then Joe continued. "We came back here about a half an hour ago. We walked in and found this place a mess." "Was anything taken?" Captain Stallson asked. "Not that we can see," Joe said. "My brother’s computer is still here and that was out in the open." "I’ll have my crew look into this. If anything does turn up missing, let me know." Captain Stallson turned and left the room. Once the door was closed, Callie said angrily, "I don’t think he believed you." "It doesn’t matter," Joe said as he started to pick clothes up off the floor searching for his black jeans. While Ned and Callie helped Joe clean up his room, Nancy went to the door and examined the outside knob where the key went in. She noticed scratch marks by the lock and knew someone did break in. By the time she walked back in, all the clothes were off the floor and folded neatly on the beds. Closing the door, Nancy moved over to Ned who was leaning against the dresser. She asked, "Is anything missing?" "Just my black jeans," Joe said sitting down on his bed. "The pair with the pendant is missing." "Can you remember anything about the pendant?" Nancy asked. "I think there was an inscription on it with a name. Something like Tammy or Terry, but I can’t remember." "How does this sound," Callie said. "To my darling Tori." "That’s it!" Joe exclaimed. "How did you know?" "I found this pendant lying on the floor. It must have fallen out of your pocket when the intruder was searching for it." Callie handed the pendant to Nancy. Nancy examined it carefully. The horse was about two inches long. She flipped it over and looked at the inscription. "Could Tori be a nickname for someone?" "It’s possible, but who would use that name?" Joe asked. As Nancy was about to respond, there was a knock on the door. Joe opened the door to find Victoria standing there. Her hair was pulled back by a loosely tied ribbon. She had on a pair of baggy pants and a baggy sweatshirt. She was glancing up and down the hallway. "Victoria," Joe said getting her attention. Victoria looked at Joe quickly. "Sorry. I thought someone was following me." "Come in," Joe said taking her hand and pulling her into the room and closing the door. Victoria turned and looked at Joe. "I thought you were going to be in my room this morning when I woke up." "When the doctor gave you something to sleep, I went to see if anyone came up with anything." "Oh, I’m sorry," Victoria said surprised when she noticed Callie, Nancy and Ned standing in the room. "I didn’t mean to interrupt." "It’s all right," Joe said. "We were just discussing your problem." "Do you have any leads yet?" Victoria asked. "Not yet," Joe said. "So, where is your brother?" "That’s the other reason I didn’t stay," Joe said. He quickly explained what happened the previous evening. When Joe finished, Victoria asked, "Will he be all right?" "We thing so," Callie said. "Hopefully his memory will come back soon." "It must be terrible not to remember who you are," Victoria said. "The doctor said he should get his memory back anytime," Nancy said sliding her hand with the pendant into her jean pocket. "Joe, I don’t mean to be rude," Victoria said turning to face him, "but could we go somewhere to talk?" "We’ll go check on Frank," Ned said looking at Nancy and Callie. "All right," Joe said and the three of them left. Once the door was closed, Victoria sat down on Joe’s bed. "I really didn’t mean to interrupt." "Don’t worry about it," Joe said leaning against the dresser. "Is there anything you can remember about the notes you received?" "Just that each one threatened my life." "Has anyone acted differently around you?" "What do you mean?" "Did anyone make a special attempt to talk to you or hang around when you’re out? Stuff like that." "Not that I can think of," Victoria said. "At first I thought it was a joke, but with Michael dead now, I’m really scared." "It’s all right," Joe said sitting down on the bed beside her. He put his arms around her and Joe felt her tighten her grasp around him. "Nothing is going to happen to you." "Do you promise?" "I promise," Joe said hoping his promise could be kept.
