CHAPTER 16

Nancy watched as two flashlights were turned on and flashed in her eyes. She heard Nathan say, "Scram."

Suddenly the lights in the room came on. Ned was standing by the windows and Joe was by the door with his hand on the light switch. Debbie and Nathan were wearing ski masks.

Nancy said, "Good timing."

"I followed them up here and heard everything," Joe said. "Let’s unmask them and get them to the police."

At the mention of involving the police, the two made a run for the door, but Ned and Joe each grabbed on. They were pushed against the walls and their ski masks were taken off their heads.

"It was stupid of you to come back here," Nancy said as she moved over to the computer. She ejected the disk. "But leaving the disk in the computer takes the cake."

"You having nothing on us," Nathan said. "You’re trespassing."

"But now we have proof that you were cheating," Nancy said. "And behind the damage caused here at school."

"You’re full of hot air," Nathan said trying to break free of Ned’s grasp. "It’s nothing more than hearsay."

All of a sudden the lights went out. Joe said, "We need to get downstairs away from the windows."

"Are we in danger?" Debbie asked, frightened.

"Not yet," Joe said taking her hand and leading her out of the science lab.

Ned grabbed Nathan by the arm and took Nancy’s left hand in his right and followed Joe. They went downstairs. Joe pushed Debbie to the floor by the gym and Ned did the same to Nathan.

Ned asked, "What do we do now?"

"We wait," Joe said sitting down across the hall from Debbie and Nathan. "Once the storm lets up we’ll go to the police."

"the police won’t do anything to us," Nathan said. "You don’t have any proof."

"We can have you charged with assault with the intent to kill," Ned said.

"I’d like to see you try," Nathan laughed.

They heard glass breaking and Joe said, "Just relax. We’ll be all right."

Nancy and Ned settled beside Joe as he shined his flashlight at Nathan and Debbie. Nancy leaned against Ned as he put his arm around her. She slipped the disk into Ned’s jacket pocket without anyone noticing. After a few minutes, Nancy asked, "Debbie, why did you start cheating?"

"How else was I supposed to get into med school?" Debbie countered.

"Why not try studying?" Ned replied sarcastically.

"Because no matter how hard I studied, I couldn’t pass my science tests."

"You’ll never survive med school," Ned said.

"I got away with it here. I’ll do it again," Debbie said defiantly.

"Any idea how long we’ll be in here?" Ned asked.

"Who knows," Joe said getting to his feet. He moved to one of the technology classroom across from the gymnasium and looked through the window of the door. He could just make out some movement through the classroom windows and saw the bushes being blown around. "Why don’t you guys relax. We’ll be fine as long as we stick together."

Nancy leaned against Ned with a sigh and he quietly asked, "Are you all right?"

"I’m fine," she replied. "Just a bad headache."

"Nathan," Joe said turning to face him. "Where’s Frank?"

"How should I know where he is?"

"Because we caught you here and we know you were her the other night," Joe said. "Why don’t you tell me where Frank is."

"I don’t know," Nathan said stubbornly. "Even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you."

"Debbie, what shed were you talking about upstairs?" Nancy asked trying to throw her off guard.

"I don’t recall any shed," Debbie said quickly.

"Who do you have in the shed?" Nancy asked getting to her feet. "Is that where Frank is?"

"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Debbie replied refusing to look at Nancy.

"Debbie," Nancy said walking over to her and kneeling beside her. "How would you feel if your dad disappeared? No one knew where he was or heard from him in days."

"I’d be really worried," Debbie said. "He means everything to me."

"And if you came across someone who knew the whereabouts of your dad, you’d want to be told where he was, wouldn’t you?"

"Yeah," Debbie said.

"So tell us where Frank is," Nancy said.

Debbie was about to say something when Nathan sprung to his feet and threw his arm around Nancy’s neck. "You’ll never find out where he is. Debbie, get to your feet."

"Let go of me," Nancy said struggling to break free.

"We’re getting out of here and you’re our insurance policy," Nathan said. Debbie opened the gym door. "You were trying to scare us into telling you where your brother is, when we don’t know. The wind my be picking up, but we are not anywhere near the hurricane yet."

"We’ll let you go," Ned said getting to his feet. "Just let Nancy go."

"Forget it!" Nathan yelled and closed the gym door.

Nancy was pulled through the locker room by Nathan. Debbie was the first to reach the emergency door and pushed it open. Nathan stepped through the door frame right behind Debbie and the wind pulled them away from the door.

Nancy grabbed a hold of the door handle as the wind tried to pull her away. Nancy yelled, "Ned! Help me !"

She tried to pull herself inside, but the wind was too strong. She held on the best she could, but her grip began to slip as the door handle got wet from the rain. She could barely see as she struggled t get back inside the gym.
