The night of the party finally arrived.
Frank drove their van with Joe inside to pick up Callie, then Vanessa.
They were all decked out in their costumes ready for a night of fun.
Looking in the rearview mirror, he realized Joe and Vanessa made the
perfect couple as a devil and angel. Glancing at Callie, he knew she was
the most gorgeous princess he had ever seen.
Pulling up to the Harris place, they climbed out after finding a parking spot. Slipping the keys into his jeans pocket under his warlock robe, Frank offered Callie his arm and they made their way to the party. As they started up the steps, the music was turned up making it seem as if the house was shaking. Stepping through the front door, they were greeted with plastic spiders dangling from the doorframe. Squeals were heard from people as they came in. Callie took his hand and led him out to the dance floor and they started moving to the music. Several fast songs were played before switching to a ballad. Frank wrapped his left arm around Callie’s waist as he clasped her left hand in his right holding it close to him. The slowly swayed to the music as Callie rested her head on his chest. He felt this was right. As the evening progressed, the music got louder and the dance floor more crowded. Frank stood near the refreshment table waiting for Callie to return. She had excused herself for a few minutes to freshen up. Watching everyone having a good time, Frank scanned the crowd for Joe and Vanessa. He saw them in the middle of the dancers moving to the beat. Being bumped from behind which felt like the thousandth time, Frank stepped into the main entrance for a break and to give his ears a rest from the loud music. As he waited for Callie to return, he looked around to kill some time. People were milling about talking and some others were leaving. Turning around, Frank noticed a staircase he hadn’t seen earlier. Moving toward it, he slowly made his way up unnoticed by everyone else. Ahead of him he saw movement and continued forward. Reaching the top, he went around the corner and stopped short. He was surprised to see a cloaked figured standing on the other side of the room. Music could be heard from down below. "We probably shouldn’t be up here," Frank said looking around. "Who knows how sturdy these floors are. Besides the party is downstairs." "Come," a voice whispered. Frank looked at the cloaked figure and saw whoever it was had a hand out and was motioning for him to follow. For some unknown reason, he wanted to know what was going on. Moving forward, the floorboards creaked with each step he took. His left foot was set on the floor. As he shifted his weight, the boards groaned and he fell through.
