CHAPTER 10

"Frank! Breathe Frank! You need to breathe!" a voice yelled through the darkness. Frank gulped in the air and started coughing. "It’s all right. He’s all right," a male voice said.

Frank could feel his body tingling, but he had to know where he was. He slowly forced his eyes open blinking against the light.

"Stay still, Frank," the male voice said. "Just stay still."

His vision slowly cleared and he saw Joe’s pale face leaning over him. He mumbled, "Joe?"

"It’s me, buddy. It’s me." Joe squeezed his shoulder. "Just hang on. Help’s on its way."

Frank stayed still taking inventory of his body. It didn’t feel like he had broken any bones, but he couldn’t be sure. He was so sore.

Turning his head slightly to the right, he noticed the decorations and knew he was still in the Harris place. Callie was off to the side being comforted by Vanessa. He saw many of the partygoers were heading for the exits. He also noticed the music was no longer playing. As his gaze moved about the room quickly, he looked for the chair he had been in and the electrical box the wires had been connected to. But they weren’t there.

"Joe?"

"What is it, Frank?" Joe asked quickly. "Are you hurting?"

Frank slowly shook his head. "How did you find me?"

"What do you mean?" Joe asked, confused.

"How did you rescue me?" Frank asked staring at his brother’s face.

Before Joe could answer, quick footsteps could be heard entering the room. Frank watched Joe get to his feet and step back out of the way. He kept his gaze on his brother. He didn’t want Joe getting out of his sight. He had to have Joe there.

He allowed the emergency medical technicians to quickly examine him. They placed a cervical collar around his neck before securing him to a backboard. Once he was strapped to the gurney, he said, "Joe."

"Who’s Joe?" the one technician asked.

"That’s me," he said stepping up to the gurney. He looked at Frank. "What do you need?"

"Come along," Frank said.

He watched Joe look at the technicians who nodded their heads. Joe looked at him. "Let me tell the girls."

"Okay."

As Joe moved over to Callie and Vanessa, Frank had a sense of relief wash over him knowing Joe would be coming along. With the uncertainty of what had happened, he didn’t want Joe out of his sight until he had some answers.

Frank remained quiet as he was wheeled to the ambulance. He had so many questions, but no answers. The gurney was locked into the ambulance and a moment later, Joe climbed in and sat beside him.

Joe gave him an encouraging smile even though his face was pale. "You’ll be just fine."

Frank closed his eyes hoping his brother was right.

*****

When Frank opened his eyes again, he saw sunlight streaming in through the window. Glancing about, he realized he was in the hospital when he spotted the IV attached to the back of his left hand and the monitor keeping track of his heartbeat. Looking up at the ceiling, he wondered what had happened. His mind was still blank about it all. As he tried to force the memory out, he realized he was probably burying it deeper.

The door opening got his attention and he looked at Joe poked his head around the doorframe. "Good, you’re awake."

"Hey, Joe." Frank reached for the bed controls and slowly raised the head of the bed up.

"How are you feeling?" Joe asked moving over to the bed.

"Still a little sore," Frank said after taking a mental inventory of where he hurt.

"I think soreness is a small price to pay when you could’ve broken your neck."

Frank stared at Joe, confused. "What are you talking about?"

Joe returned the stare. "What’s the last thing you remember?"

"Being at the party waiting for Callie to come back."

"Anything after that?" Joe asked settling in the chair beside the bed.

Frank dug through his memories. Waiting for Callie was the last memory he had until he woke hearing Joe telling him to breathe. He looked at his brother. "What happened?"

"Well, from what we can figure, you found a staircase to the second floor. You were walking across some old floorboards when they broke and you fell through. You hit some old electrical wires and were shocked."

"I was electrocuted?"

"Just a bit," Joe said. "But you’re going to be fine. The doctor said so." Joe got to his feet and moved to the bed. "Just don’t do it again."

Frank gave Joe a small smile. "I’ll try not to."

"Frank, do you remember everything after you woke up?"

"Most of it. Why?"

"You asked how I found you, but it didn’t make any sense."

Frank closed his eyes as he pulled his thoughts together. He looked again at Joe. "Something happened," Frank admitted. "That’s why I figured you had rescued me."

"Frank, what is it?" Joe had noticed Frank looked scared. "You know you can tell me."

"I’m not even sure it was real," Frank said looking away from Joe realizing it was possible he made it all up.

"Frank, I have never seen you like this," Joe said. "What has you so flustered?"

Frank remained quiet. He needed to get out of there. He had to see for himself whether it was real or not. He pushed himself to a sitting position, holding back a cry of pain from his back. He looked around for his clothes as he swung his legs over the side of the bed.

"What are you doing?" Joe asked. "You shouldn’t be moving around like that."

"Where are my clothes?" Frank countered.

"The doctor wants to keep you here for a couple days to make sure you’re all right."

"I’m fine. Find me my clothes."

"I’m going to find your doctor," Joe stated and left the room.

Frank looked at the IV and pulled it out of the back of his hand. He then took off the wires connected to the heart monitor. He pushed himself to his feet and slowly stood up, taking a moment to get his balance. He moved over to the closet and pulled the door open revealing his clothes. He grabbed his pants and shirt and slowly started to change.

He had gotten his pants on and was buttoning his shirt when the door opened. Joe walked in with the doctor.

"Where do you think you are going, Mr. Hardy?" the doctor asked.

"I need to get out of here," Frank said sitting down on the chair and pulling on his socks.

"I really don’t think that’s wise."

"I have to agree with the doctor," Joe said.

Frank looked up at them. "I’m going."

"Why are you being so stubborn?" Joe asked. "You’re acting like me."

Frank stood up once his shoes were on. "Then you know why I have to go."

He moved slowly toward the door feeling his back throb. He had to know what happened at the Harris place the previous evening.

"Then I’m coming with you," Joe said. "Mom and Dad would have my hide if you got hurt worse."

Frank gave Joe a small smile. "Thanks."

"So, where are we going?" Joe asked as they made their way to the elevator.

"To Harris place."
