The next morning, Frank slowly woke. He
shifted slightly and felt some pain. He stayed still as he opened his eyes.
Looking around expecting to be in his bedroom, he was surprised to be in
the living room. A moment later, he realized he must have fallen asleep.
Sunlight was streaming through the window.
As he rubbed his face to wake up, he heard footsteps. Pulling his hands away, he saw Joe enter the living room. Frank waved. "I’m glad you’re awake," Joe said. "We need to talk." Frank nodded his head as Joe came closer. Joe handed him a bunch of papers and he knew these were his notes. "I read over your notes," Joe said. "The incidents are getting more severe with each one. The person needs to be caught." Frank nodded his head as he grabbed a pen. He wrote, "need to figure out who." "Is Rachel one of your suspects?" "Possibly," Frank wrote. "I did a lot of thinking last night and I think I saw someone near the van when you were talking with Coach Williams. I think saw Rachel." "Are you sure?" Frank wrote. "Not completely. I saw some movement and I assume it was Rachel. I’m not sure though." Frank wrote, "Chet said Rachel at parlor before accident. Football players teasing her again. Rachel left." "Do you think Rachel is involved in the incidents?" "Possibly." "Why? She has no reason." "Rachel may be tired of being teased. Rachel been teased all her life. We’ve seen it. She may not be able to take anymore." "There are other ways to deal with teasing." "Maybe only solution she had." "Rachel has the party today," Joe said. "It would be a perfect opportunity to hurt others if she’s involved. I don’t think many people have been to the museum. Everyone that does go could be in danger." "Can’t let it happen if Rachel involved," Frank wrote. He pushed the blanket off his legs and slowly struggled to his feet. "Where are you going?" Joe asked. Frank pointed upstairs. "Why?" "Change," Frank wrote. "You’re not going to the party," Joe said. "Have to. Need to stop this." "How are you going to get there? Neither of us can drive." "Callie. You coming?" "I’m the only one who can keep you from getting hurt again." Frank smiled. ***** Hours later, Frank and Joe were on their way to the museum even though the party didn’t start for another hour or so. The museum was on the other side of town. Joe asked, "How did Rachel get the party at the museum?" Frank wrote that her father owns the museum and it was big enough for the party. "If it’s big, then anything can happen." Frank nodded his head knowing Joe was right. It was possible Rachel was involved and if she was, then anything could happen. He wondered if Rachel would try something. She knows the museum better than anyone else, Frank thought. She could plan something and no one would know. We need to be on our guard just in case she is involved. When they arrived at the museum, there was one car in the lot. The three of them got out and Frank looked at Callie. "Please be careful. I’m not sure what will happen." "I promise." The three of them moved toward the building. As Frank was about to ring the bell, the door flew open. Rachel jumped back. "You startled me," Rachel said. "Sorry." Frank looked at Callie and Joe, then back to Rachel. "We came to help you set up." "That was nice of you," Rachel said smiling. "But everything’s pretty much set. I just have to get a bag out of the car. "Joe will get it," Frank said. "There’s no need." Rachel moved to the car and opened the trunk. Frank nudged Joe to help her. Joe moved to the car and pulled the bag out. Rachel closed the trunk and made her way back to them with Joe following behind. "Why don’t you come in," Rachel said. They followed her inside and were amazed at how the main room looked. A sound system was set up along one wall. Streamers clung to the walls and balloons stuck to the ceiling. Rachel took the bag from Joe and set it behind the table where the snacks were. She turned to them. "It’ll be a while before the others arrive, so would you like a tour?" Frank looked at Callie who nodded her head. He said, "That sounds like fun." "Come along." Frank tapped Joe on the shoulder and they followed Rachel through the museum. She told them that when the museum was built, it was the site where numerous carrousels were designed and built. As Rachel walked and talked, Frank looked for anything unusual. When they finished the tour where some of the old carrousel pieces were being restored, Callie said, "It must be nice to have a piece of history in the family." "It’s all right," Rachel said without any enthusiasm. "What wrong?" Callie asked. "Nothing." At that moment, the door bell rang. "The others are arriving. Follow me." Callie and Rachel led the way down the hallway as Frank held back with Joe. Frank pulled the notepad out of his pocket. "Why are you holding back?" Joe asked. "Rachel up to something," Frank wrote. "What?" "Not sure. Feeling. Stick with her." "Okay." "Are you two coming?" Callie asked. "We are," Frank replied as he wrote. "Be careful." "I will." They made their way back to the main room. |
