Callie and Frank were slow dancing in the
crowd. Callie had her head on Frank's chest as they moved in a circle.
Frank looked around the room at all the people there. Members of the
football team were in attendance along with some cheerleaders. Matt and
Melissa were also present with a bunch of other classmates.
I know I saw Joe earlier, he thought. I wonder if he's following Rachel. I wonder if she is involved and if she is, what's going on? "Frank," Callie said getting his attention. They stopped dancing. Frank looked at her and saw her gaze was somewhere else. He looked in that direction and saw Vanessa hurrying toward them, her face pale. "What's wrong?" Frank asked as Vanessa slid to a stop. "Rachel's gone crazy" "What happened?" Frank asked. "Rachel was talking crazy about how everyone was going to pay. She was going to get even with everyone. She had a crowbar and Joe was trying to calm her down. He told me to go." Vanessa looked Frank in the eye. "I'm worried about Joe." "Is everyone in danger?" Callie asked. "Possibly," Frank replied. He moved toward the deejay and motioned for him to turn the music off. The room grew quiet. Everyone was looking at him. Frank took the microphone. "Everyone needs to quickly exit the building. All of you are in danger." "You're lying," Matt said. "I never lie," Frank said. "Everyone is in danger. You need to get out of here now." Party-goers recognizing the urgency in his voice quickly did as he asked making their way to the exits. Frank returned the microphone to the deejay then looked at Callie and Vanessa. "Do you need any help?" Callie asked. "I'll be fine. Go out and wait." "Be careful." "I will." Callie and Vanessa turned and followed the others outside. Frank made his way down the hall the way Vanessa had come. He moved slowly. The hall was dark now. Frank noticed something on the floor ahead. As he got closer, he realized it was Joe. Kneeling down without jarring his ribs, Frank touched Joe's neck. Joe was alive, but unconscious. Frank saw the crowbar on the floor beside his brother. Looking up, he saw a door slightly ajar. Frank slowly got to his feet and took a step toward the door. Feeling a hand on his shoulder, he turned quickly, ready to defend himself. Matt was standing there. As Matt was about to speak, Frank put his hand over Matt's mouth and motioned for him to be quiet. Taking his hand away, Frank asked quietly, "What are you doing?" "I didn't think it was dangerous if you were still in the building." "I came to get Joe. It's time to get out. Now." Matt stepped past Frank and asked, "What's with the open door?" "Should the door be open?" Frank countered. "It shouldn't be," Matt said. "Paint supplies are kept in that room. The room should be locked." Matt stepped to the door and pushed it all the way open. "What are you doing?" Frank stepped up behind Matt and saw Rachel in the room. She was mixing chemicals. "Are you crazy?" Matt asked. Rachel turned to them. Frank could see she was angry. Rachel angrily said, "Go away." Matt stepped into the room. "Rachel, we can talk about this." "Get out!" Rachel yelled. Frank knew Rachel couldn't be reasoned with. He put his hand on Matt's shoulder and pulled him into the hall. "Take Joe and get out." Matt stared at him. "What about you?" "I'll be right behind you." Matt was quiet for a moment. "All right." He gently picked Joe up and made his way down the hall. Frank stepped back into the room and watched Rachel for a moment. She was taking chemicals off a shelf and dumping them into a big bucket. He realized she wasn't sure what she was doing. "Why does everyone have to get hurt?" Frank asked. "They deserve it." "Why?" Rachel started rambling. "People have always teased me. They teased me about everything. Matt and Melissa teased me most of all. It's hard being in the same class as them. Matt and Melissa are so popular. They put me down because I'm not. I'm not going to take the teasing anymore, from anyone. I will solve it and no one will hurt me again." "There are other ways to solve this," Frank said taking another step closer to her. "You don't have to hurt others to get your point across. No one has been seriously injured or killed yet. You need to stop before someone does." Rachel looked at him. "I knew you would figure it out sooner or later. I knew you'd investigate. You couldn't stay away." Frank knew he needed to distract her. "Why did you go after the athletes. They never hurt you. I don't believe you want to hurt others. You can stop this before someone is hurt." Rachel dropped an unmarked bottle into the bucket. "This is the only solution. This has to be done." Frank knew trouble was coming. He grabbed Rachel by the arm knowing time was counting down and they needed to get out. Rachel struggled in Frank's grasp as he realized how dangerous the situation was. Turning to Rachel, he lifted her over his shoulder grunting in pain. He rushed down the hall toward the exit as she hit him on the back with her fists and kept telling him to put her down. Frank kept going unsure of how much time they had left to get to safety. Reaching the exit, he pulled the door open and saw the partygoers were about 100 feet away. He hurried toward them. The explosion quickly came throwing Frank forward
